I can't imagine it being effective in either role, certainly not sufficiently so to justify the cost. Far more useful platforms have been made a mockery of by IEDs and RPG-7s.

Generally you want your flagship to actually be capable, not just cool looking; otherwise its just a walking joke.

If they are big enough to have jetbacks they are big enough to have a hellfire missile homing in from 2,000 yards away.

But if it has tentacles no one will be safe. At least no Japanese schoolgirls.

I honestly don't know what the hell Japan is thinking with this one. Like others, I assume this would be more of a small, personal power-armor type suit than an actual Gundam, and even that seems to me to be impractical.

With current tech it could have a role in logistics, as seen with various US military projects. But the power and weight requirements are too great to make it useful in combat.

I mean, think about it, you're fighting in an urban environment and need to clear a house, but you can't because if you walk inside, and there's a basement, the floor is probably going to give way. This traps the power suit in the streets, at which point you may as well use a normal armored vehicle.

If we're going to see anything that is somewhat humanoid and robotic it'll be from these guys.

It could be used for international politics.

Here's a picture I found of the concept in action.

I see it as a fearsome internal security or counter insurgency unit. Or in this case a walking flagship for Japans SDF.

And yet a recon team, or seal, or some other team designed for infiltration and taking out targets, would be able to dispatch one of those fairly easy as well. Seriously, things like walkers are just for showing off.

My problem with that, is usually you see them wanting to move/carry heavy things a man cannot. See, me, not living in LALA land, sees that as an incredibly expensive, overly complex fork lift. You know why forklifts are so popular? Because they fething work, thats why. And if it breaks, its usually easy to fix. If not, scrap it and buy a newer, better forklift. Not piss billions on a walking suit/exosuit just so I can lift 600pounds.

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.

If we are talking an actual working Gundam replica, then this is a huge but utterly awesome waste of money and I don't know whether to shout at or salute the Liberal Democratic party.

If we are just talking about mobile leg propelled military vehicles, then it could work. In an urban environment, it would have the advantage of increased mobility and navigation of crowded spaces. I imagine they are thinking more of something like an Imperial Guard Sentinel than a full blown Gundam. There is already a prototype walking tank in existence, it is quite mobile and has good terrain clearence, but it is quite slow. However it is still a very early prototype and is from a while back.

Also, I feel the OP has been watching too much Fox News.

International bragging rights?

Just as with early tanks it probably has more of an intimidation factor and a certain awe to it than actual capability.

It seems like Boston Dynamics has been working on the Big Dog FOREVER. At this point it looks like it will just be a DARPA novelty. I can see more coming from the powered exoskeletons being developed into a power armor weapon system carting around a BFG as more reasonable.

Some of the tech from the XOS has already been developed into an unmanned mecha like suit.

I'm sure a Gundam would see some use after Japan pushes forward space colonisation.

The Kasrkin were just men. It made their actions all the more astonishing. Six white blurs, they fell upon the cultists, lasguns barking at close range. They wasted no shots. One shot, one kill. - Eisenhorn: Malleus

I could see gundams working in city fights depending on how small they are. A nimble tank with legs could move around a bombed city quite well.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Tracked vehicles do it far better then a bi ped robot. Try and think how difficult it would be to keep the thing balanced, while climbing around craters and gak. ID rather have a tank

They have been working on it for some time, it still blows me away though. I've seen that suit before, it's pretty cool. I think it featured on a program about robotic prosthesis and how prosthesis technology has advanced very quickly over the last decade. So while we might not see the big dog come to service and almost positive we'll see it's technology implemented in prosthetics in some form or another.

In any case Japan is already far behind Taiwan/Republic of China.

They've leapfrogged Gundam tech and moved right into transforming mecha.

I wonder if they have foreign legion I can join?

Well yea those would be far superior. I was talking more for trogging through the ground, tracks are better then a bi ped.
