Heh, I know what you mean. But my main problem wasn't the stats, but the art and so on. Some of it is good, but other parts are terrible.

Ravenloft is all about the overwhelming but fairly uncommon encounters though

As long as all the villains have some sort of weakness or character flaw to exploit.

The closest I ever came to TPK was a Dire Bear when my urban group with no tank left their city for a jaunt through the wilderness. I totally wasn't expecting it but the damn thing close to wiped them out.

2E is the gak, but 3.5 was where I started and am now doing Pathfinder because 4E was a joke. The 5E playtest stuff isn't too bad, it's just meh compared to the rest.

Fourth Edition was a joke? LOL. You know what is a really good joke? Selling rules to people who already have them but changing the cover and few other tidbits. Wizards of the Coast is just learning from the master comedian ...
