Modders usually do that for them.
That said, I don't see the Total War style working very well in a sci-fi (or modern setting) without a major overhaul of the RTS segments of the game, at which point it's not really total war anymore.

I don't mind them constantly remaking historical games as new technologies and graphics become available... even if we get to the point where we're getting 'Medieval 6: Total War'.
TW is suited to mass formation warfare, I don't think it could feasibly go past the 1870s... so I'd look to other devs for that 'future fix'.
I do sometimes get the feeling, Melissia, that you do like to counter the trend in anything relating to popular culture, mind

I would love to see a good fantasy Total War. It'd be wonderful to field dragons, or see battle mages blasting magical fire through enemy ranks. Failing that, just something low fantasy with fictional races and units would be cool.
But if makes you feel better: You shut your damn mouth! You're wrong and I hate you!

Isnt that Sid Meirer? Or am I thinking of a different Alpha Centauri?

Wasnt there a mod group trying to make The Great War: Total War?

Sounds a bit like King Arthur, though I never actually played those games...

It was a shame. Good game, (awesome actually) but there were so many glitches that just made it a pain in the ass to play. Like the perma-infinite spawning AI armies in one the game's later chapters.
Granted, this was a few years ago. For all I know the glitches have been fixed. Check the steam forums

Hmm, it could work for 40k.
That said, 40k is pretty much history in Spaaaaace

I would have assumed they fixed their things in King Arthur 2. Though again I'm not sure...

The problems I remember had been present in the game for over a year. Needless to say, people were skeptical. Especially with less known and indie titles, game breaking glitches will often go unfixed simply because the developer doesn't care or doesn't see the point in patching a $5 game

There was.
And it was essentially the same as Napoleon Total War: mass units of infantry fighting in line battles... no trench/irregular warfare. I'm no modder but it seems to me that Total War's engine relies on infantry behaving as cohesive blocks... I don't think it's possible for each individual man to plan his own path-finding or fight as an individual. Irregular warfare is impossible; even skirmishers behave in unison.

They haven't. Apparently the constantly spawning armies are a 'feature'. Its still a reasonably decent game even if half way through it becomes all but unplayable without cheating.
The thing about TW remakes is that they aren't really remakes in the traditional sense. Shogun: TW plays very differently to Shogun 2 and Rome 2 sounds like it will be at least as different.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Considering total war didn't work in empire/napolean, we can safely say it wouldn't work in modern/futuristic.

Looks pretty Epic, ever since Time Commanders I have loved Rome total war. I hope rome is only one faction in this so they dont get an unfair advantage. I also hope units have a more "realistic" journey time (eg it takes over a year to cross the med in a boat) although due to the campaign map mechanics I dont think this will happen.

Haha damn, Time Commanders was legendary.
I eagerly await gamescom were they will be showing it, well behind closed doors but no doubt it will mean new stories.
I seriously doubt it but I wish this is going to be properly moddable again. A new call of warhammer with them graphics, my life would be complete.

Of course Rome would only be one faction. You still got the Greeks, Carthaginians, the Gauls, the Britons, the Huns, the Goths, the Persians, the Numidians, heck maybe even have the Etruscans if we're going that early in time. And still many more

I miss the awesome modding potential of Medieval 2. But I'll agree that it will be highly doubtful
