Then I suspect that you have misunderstood the purpose of the cards.
They're not a playing piece, just a reference. It lets you put cards on the table to remind yourself what your powers do, instead of having to refer to the book.
Is that what they are? Like 2ed wargear cards, because that has not been made particularly clear from GW.
Yup. They released the exact same thing for 8th ed. Fantasy.
Edit - Speaking of which, I just had a really bad thought.

Given that they already dip into the rulebook powers, I wouldn't be surprised if Chaos doesn't get anything new.
It would be nice if they do, though.
As a forenote, I think the cards are derpy in the extreme. If I wanted to play a card game I would have taken up MTG.
I would be incredibly surprised if Chaos of any army didn't receive cards if that is indeed their intention. Perhaps not the MOST psychic army, but the only army with out and out sorcerers should have its own cards ja?
Probably the only real armies that won't get their unique flavors of psykers would be C: SM and Imperial Guard, C: SM had most of its own powers placed into the variants in 6th edition (some even better now, like smite!) And Imperial guard wouldn't really do anything unique, though they may get something special for something like the Psyker Battle Squadron, but that's it.

Yea Psykers aren't considered normal in the imperial guard. They're rare and considered to be loonies. The Guardsmen don't usually trust or like them. Therefore they are hardly used, and guards got plants of strong points with its tanks and large numbers.
I doubt the Primarius Psyker will get anything (he has Mastery 1 and can take 2 powers) And the Battle squadron will probably get changed in the next codex (I hope they do, they suck) Probably Mastery 1 and only 1 ability to take

The PBS is mastery one under the brotherhood of psyker rules (I think)
Generally they actually do have plenty of psykers, the astropath isn't exactly a non-psyker, there's Navigators (with the special Warp Eye mutation, though they lead the ships above) not to mention the various lesser psykers they have around to "Battle" or "Protect" against enemy psykers. Though mostly it depends on which IG group it is, some have none at all while some gladly use entire battalions of psykers. Usually groups with commissars ready or with higher ranked Primaris to lead them in a Psyker Chorus.

I fully expect Tzeentch, Nurgle and Slaanesh sorcerers to each get their own discipline, plus access to different generic disciplines based on Mark (Divination for Tzeentch, Biomancy for Nurgle, etc.)

No. Where did you get that idea? No one said that.
This may be coming from the pocket of gamers (such as myself) who are confused as to why people are spending nearly 10 pounds on something that already exists in the rulebook.

Yeah, foolish me for expecting something for my money from GW!

This is why I was interested even after finding out they're nothing special. I have a lot of random nostalgia over those cards we got in codexs in 2nd too

Just ease of use I guess, you could just make them out on index cards. They are also a nice way of marking an ongoing effect. You should never be confused as to how someone spends their own money.

One thing that I am glad the 40k cards have that the Fantasy magic ones didn't have is actual Numbers on the cards for when you roll for the powers.
