reseerves are a strong platy for whittling down enemy firepower before you expose softer stuff like these. I see no problem doing it. I just know that you have to now do it differently.

I've liked rough riders for a long time. Not likely to change that.

Here's an idea for ya': GrandMaster can make them outflank can't he? Yes? no?

Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and then crush him.

The #1 problem rough riders had in 5th ed is even worse in 6th ed, they compete with vendettas for a fa slot.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Creed only works on infantry and vehicle units, not cavalry.

Hunting Lances would not benefit from Furious Charge because hunting lances have a fixed strength. Furious Charge adds one to the guardsman's strength making it 4. Hunting Lances hit at Strength 5 regardless of the user's strength. (6th ed. rulebook, pg 2, pg 50)

Using Grey Knights as allies would not be helpful because they are allies of convenience and would not benefit from each others rules. (6th ed. rulebook, pg 112)

In 6th, I think roughriders make better dragoon-type hunter squads, than counter-assault units. With the changes to cavalry movement (12 inch move), theyre the closest thing guard have to fast jump troops. Give them some meltaguns and send em forward.
For 70 points, you get a mobile 5 man tank hunting squad, that also has some bite on the assault. Scuttle them up a flank, trying to keep out of sight (and hope you have juicier targets), and they might be able to pick off a vehicle or two.
Considerably cheaper than stormtroopers or melta-mech-vets, but less reliable (dont forget, if a CCS is in range, you can issue any orders to roughriders as well!)

Forgeworld also has rules for those big tallarn elephant-lizard roughriders (imperial guard, feb2012 update). They cost twice as much, but have T4 and 2 wounds. I always thought this should be the standard statline anyways, because... friggin warhorses. How is a horse not T4?? If I was to run roughriders, I'd probobly use the forgeworld rules and use armoured empire knight horses as counts-as.
