I think the only valid complaints I can think of are people MFA, and the ork trukks, which realy should be used as warbuggies. I'm sure there are a few others, like the old gaz, who I'd use as a freebooter rather than gaz. However all old minis are legal in some way. GW have said this time and again.

Heh. Yeah, they learned their lesson the last time they tried to restrict old models. Right after the change over to 3rd edition, the in-store gaming and GW sanctioned tournement rules were ammended to state that models must be those "currently available". You can imagine the outrage. The preasure was such that this rule lasted only a couple of months before it was quietly removed.

I don't think even GW is foolish enough to try that stunt again. But it's been almost 15 years and the upper level staff has almost completely been rotated out since then. So who knows....

What about the cardboard Ork Dreadnought that came with the 2nd edition starter set?

It's technically an official Games Workshop model, even if it can turn sideways and hide behind a telephone pole.

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

No game of chess can be won without pawns, and this may prove to be a very long game.

I wouldn't mind except that most (not all) old models look terrible. I detest the old Rhino. I have 7 of them and replaced them all with Mk3s.

Technically legal, it's a Games Workshop model.

That's very subjective; I will agree that old models are almost never as detailed as modern models, but they have a certain character and charm that is all their own. The old Ork models are very cool, even if they're typically not as detailed as modern ones.

The main advantage being that they are £4.

Im confused, i was going to use old bloodletters (with axes) as they would get to use poweraxes, but the hellblades are errata(d?) to use powerSWORD rules. surely you can still use the models though?

Every time this topic is brought up, someone mentions the cardboard cutout Space Ork dred. Let's be honest for a second. Has anyone ever seen anyone actually use that thing? Ever? Be honest now. Speaking in my own experience, I never have. Even back when the 2nd edition box set first came out, I don't recall ever seeing that thing on the table. My own 2nd edition box still has that cutout in it. But I have never used it and never will. But then, I have three of the old "egg body" Ork dreads so don;t need that thing....

That being said, by the letter of the rules it is indeed a legal model. Thus I would not have an issue playing against it....although I might give the owner a little good natured ribbing. I would insist that he pivot the "model" in place so as to present the front/back of the cutout in the direction I was was shooting at it from if I had a question about LoS.

Of course this brings up the broader topic of what exactly is a legal GW model. Are Armorcast/Epicast models legal? How about Marauder Miniatures? How about Wargames Foundry castings that are rebranded Citadel historicals? If Forgeworld ever loses their contract with GW will they remain legal? But like I said, that's a whole other topic...

wouldn't mind except that most (not all) old models look terrible.

I certainly agree that it's subjective and a matter of personal opinion. But I think you are making the same mistake that many do in confusing "detail" with "clutter".

I adore using old minis, more so with my CSM, after all, the old Marines (pre Beakie) and the old Rhinos fit right in with the fact Chaos didnt get to update all their toys.

My SoB army, well I bought the Rhinos (and Rhino body tanks) back in the day, and I see no reason to replace what I have if it is not broken.

I say that, only because someone asked me to play Magic the Gathering a while back, not played since Ice Age or so, so I pull out an old deck and get chanced off because my cards are to old....well I paid for them...and they still work. In 40K they even have the same name...so I am not getting new ones to repalce the old ones...now i do get new Rhinos from time to time, but because I need a new one, not because the model changed.

Funny story with that...when Dreads went plastic, people were playing a dread only game for fun, and started bitching...my friend had the old school, all metal, had to be pinned and welded together so not to break and base had to be weighted so it didnt fall over..and he looked up and said "new game, we each get to club someone else with or mini, the last one standing wins" then dropped his Dread on the table and smiled.

Thats very subjective. I don't use any vehicles from later than 2nd edtion, aside from anything else they are significantly cheaper on Ebay.

Sculpting quality could be hit and miss until the early/mid 90's but most things since 2nd ed onwards don't look out of place on the modern tabletop. I have a Catachan army comprised entirely of 2nd ed metals and it looks much better than the more recent plastics.

RT era models can definately be a bit ropey (but then again they are 20+ years old) but there are some classics as well.

Yes right.. they've actually got quite a good following as they resemble the Pre-Heresy rhinos depicted in the Collected Visions book, so people are still trying to get hold of them for that purpose.

I love old models and have added to my ancient RT Guard army over time. I have only ever gotten compliments when they have been brought out.

I have no problem with people using older models providing they don't use the smaller size for line of sight skullduggery. For example, I love the 3rd edition Carnifex, and even though it's a bit smaller than the current kit I would have no problem with people using it.

i guess to each their own. I have only old style rhinos as the new ones look to boxy imo. I've only been able to find a few of the old style but i have 4 of them now and would gladly replace every new style i have for the older ones
