Not sure if serious.

Spoiler:
The Tsar Bomba (and indeed all Hydrogen Bombs) was a fusion bomb. We've had the destructive part figured since the 50's.

My mistake. My point still stands though, we'll find some greater power source and that will be made into even greater weapons of mass destruction.

Well, I reckon it was largely meant to impress other nations, less for actual science. Nuclear detonations are detected and kept track of, and setting off a nuke is to a nation like rich people flashing their shiny new car. It's all a game of one-upsmanship, each side continuously reassuring the other they're still there and still capable to plunge the world into armageddon.

This. After the first few detonations, the real question isn't weither or not it can blow up, but weither or not we can deliver it. And if you know the sides, it's just a show (albeit a dangerous one). India and Pakistan, for example...

Have you ever lit off firecrackers?

Have you ever been able to stop after lighting off just one when you had a whole box full right next to you?

Same principle applies to nukes.

Nah, honestly they don't get into the 'why this gak is happening' part until the first book is about done with. It's mostly just a reason to make the world the way it is in the stories.

That's the reason I always giggle a bit when I see one of those "Nuclear power? No thanks!" pins with a smiling sun on it. The thing's the biggest source of nuclear power in the solar system!

The Tzar Bomba was proof of concept nothing more, it was intended to be even bigger but the ecological cost would be too high. Something must be bad if it makes even the Soviet Union stretch it green credentials to exclude.

Tzar Bomba was never put into production only one was built, plus duplicate external shell for use as a museum piece.

The weapon is not deployable, the US made a 25MT bomb which was also not deployable. c12MT is the deployable limit and 5MT is a practical limit for a heavy nuke and most nukes don't actually need to be that big. 100-500kt is enough to feth a target area, 2-5MT for citybusters and 5-10MT high altitude detonation to create a continent wide EMP.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Somebody should figure out a cannon that shoots nukes by exploding smaller nukes.

Exploding nukes is indeed a method proposed for getting into space FYI.

Yes, although perhaps preferably not as a scattering of our component atoms at the top of a mushroom cloud!

No seriously the force of the blast is directed. It would be a hellufava G force but its a real deal.

Long cancelled US plan to use nuclear rocketry, the most controversial portion being a nuclear launch vehicle. IIRC Kennedy wasn't impressed.

At the end of the video, when it shows a sped-up version of each countries experiments, notice that during the USA part Japan lights up again and again and again. What is this supposed to signify?

Well, they did deploy it, from air, delivered by a bomber. Sure, it'd have been much more difficult to get it to the states as it would probably require mid-air refueling, not to mention the risk of having it shot down by interceptors, but still.

The bomber was obviously not well-suited to deliver such a huge package, but as every so often with Russian engineering, they just "made it" work.

Not that dissimilar from that one Boeing that carried the space shuttle on its back though, now that I think about it.

Got your answer I believe. They were underwater nuclear explosion. Not the city buster type. Small yield nukes...like an artillery nuke. FRazz mention that earlier about the underwater ones. 500m min depth

So ... we performed nuclear tests in Japan? Can someone direct me to more info on this? I can't imagine this going on; it would be a political nightmare.

The flashing animations at the end are just looped over several times. I don't think it signifies anything.

I don't know if this is connected to France's number of nuclear tests or not, but today much of their energy comes from nuclear power plants.

All the bad jokes in the world can't really obfuscate the fact that France has long been a military powerhouse. 4th or 5th for a large part of the latest half of the 20th, I think?

And, it's a damn good remedy to that german habit of trying to conquer France every other 50 years...

This kind of ties into Dakka and it being a Warhammer forum.. The reasoning behind the one Marine chapter being named the 'Rainbow Warriors', because of the ship of the same name that had been sunk by French intelligent agents (the ship had been protesting about nuclear testing in the South Pacific).

Just in case anyone didn't know about that!
