The campaign would have to be more 'smart' fighting than running and gunning - turrets, arty strikes, cover, sniping and what have you to make up for being a guardsman; but I think that would be for the best.

I've been saying for years and I'll say it again: Brothers in Arms, but for the Imperial Guard. It would work really, really well. You have squad command, you still have FPS action, and you have a larger scale battle. As far as multiplayer goes, players could either be a fireteam of Guardsmen with command abilities or a single Space Marine, or on the other side a Chaos Marine and a squad of cultists. You'd have to limit the Marines to 50% of the team or something so it didn't just end up being Space Marine With Some Other Guys, but I think it's honestly the best way to show the universe from a simple guy's perspective.

I gotta defend Space Marine. I still play the multiplayer off and on, I think its great fun set in the universe I love.

I think a transition to FPS would be utterly terrible. (Keep in mind Space Marine is a 3rd person shooter, not FPS, huge difference). That market is dominated by cliche titles with gimmicky gameplay, thats more concerned with pumping out new titles than it actually advanceing the industry.

Space Marine didn't "Break the Rictor Scale" but it did offer up something big. It showed you can have seemless transition of ranged to melee in a shooting focused game. The first thing people will think is, "Thats not true, Gears of War has melee." but it's not seemless, it's a finishing move for a foe that gets too close. Space Marine actually gave a simple but effective ,moveset to fight in melee and represented that side of 40k.. the up close and abosolutely brutal side.

Granted stuff could be done better, but the game is far from "Terrible."

Anyway, I'll hush up on that point.

First Off, Dedicated Servers. That should clear up the lag issues. I hated it not having dedicated servers.

I would have liked to see them add Terminators. A close combat ground option would have been interesting to see and play. Of course it would take testing but I would have had them move slower than normal marines but have much higher armor, thier ranged options would be very limited, (Storm Bolter - but must always have to fire from the hip). If fact you could force them to deep strike into the map, allowing them to choose where they spawn, but also making thier spawn rather random (To a degree, not like spawning in the enemies spawn)

I would have definately loved to see larger battles and some dialogue. I think adding a mode where players fight alongside NPC's on a battlefield would have been pretty sick. The players playing the "Heroes" of each army. This would open up the Orks and Imperial Guard to be represented within multiplayer.. (Something I was really hoping they would do).

Heck, you add that squad level of combat in this mode, since you are the hero, (Orks - Nobz IG- Officers/ Sergeants), you could direct a small squad of NPC's to perform different duties depending on how the battle was going. I would keep it simple though, trying to perform this action while a heavy firefight is going on would more likely be too much to be fun.

I've been tracking a game, from what I understand, is basically Space Marine two.

Warhammer 40,000 Dark Millenium - is said to play very much like Space Marine. It used to be an MMO but has transitioned into a Single player game with an online function due to THQ being unable to find a finnacial partner for it. You'll no doubt see multiplayer battle with the game, (After-all it is 40k) and from what I understand they'll doing more than one faction. (Thank the lord!)

I think it's a smart move for the game, and I have high hopes for it.

Wish Dawn of War 3 was close. :(

Edit: I play Space Marine on Xbox Live under "Cappn77". I know it can be laggy but maybe I'll see ya'll on the battlefield.

I would never say the game is terrible, I was just posting about how I thought some of their design decisions were not the best.

I still play the multiplayer frequently, I just wish there were more that did as well.

Hopefully Darksiders 2 does well so DMO(Dark Millennium Offline) will actually be able to come out. Personally I hope that DMO harkens back to that 4 player coop we saw video of before SM ever came out, I think that would have been a much more compelling setup than what we got.

If it was 5 player coop, it would actually be like a Space Marine squad.

Also, I don't say Dark Millennium Offline in a derogatory sense, I am thrilled that it won't be an MMO to be honest; very tired of them as a whole. I am very anxious to see what they come up with for it.

The big failing for me for space marine was the complete and utter uselessness of your squad mates. They barely had any lines at all (imagine if that had DA Origins style off the cuff comments most of the time) and were totally useless in the actual fight. In a 25+ ork battle, most of the time they'd kill err.... 2? So 1 each.

Cooperative Mode (up to 3 players) would have been awesome as well. And maybe some orders being able to be given to your squad too.

Gears of MASSive Space Marine: Origins sounds about right to me.

I enjoyed Space Marine. It is what got me into 40K in the first place. It has its flaws, but is excellent as a starting point for fleshed out sequels. I guess thats the route that DMO was going, but it seems to be vaporware at this point. In todays day an age, kids and adults alike are more apt to follow a video game than a tabletop game. Thats where GW NEEDS to push their games in order to up model sales. And even if they dont sell the models to new fans, theyre at least moving the video games.

Im on XBox, gamertag is d3m01iti0n. I still play SM from time to time, so feel free to add me!

I'm having a fun time playing through some of the campaign again.

I think my reasoning for rather having more environmentally varied locations to visit and multi-player coop campaign still stand though. Other than those, I think the campaign plays pretty well.

I had a lot of fun playing this game, and maybe you had to be a big fan of 40K to get that type of value from it...

But, given the rather cliffhanger ending, I'm sad that there's no sequel coming!

A: IMHO a good game could be made from a Guardsman's perspective

B: YMMV but IMHO CoD was never that bad. But, that is another topic for another day.

C: If they were to make another Space marine game they should do it from a different chapter, and maybe have the option to play as a Space Marine Scout.

I think that Space Marines' lack of success was because they tried to make it just xenos-purging fun, instead of trying to innovate and be original. Also, if I'm told, the multiplayer is a bit mediocre, and nowadays, multiplayer is as important as singleplayer, if not more so.

I just got the game and am just going through the campaign right now, but I like it, though I admit it's very limited.

The good:

1. Seemless from shooter into hand-to-hand combat. I've always hated 3rd person in other games because I often could only see what was immediately surrounding my character but in SM I can look quite far from my character and even use my zoom, especially with the sniper rifle (Stalker Bolter), to pick off very distint enemies.

2. I like the "look around" time in between battles. My brother complains about the time spent walking around but I enjoy just "smelling the roses" (or cordite) and exploring the battlefield.

3. Squad mates. Though limited and seemingly indestructible, I enjoy the banter while I walk around. I hate being alone like in most FPS like the first couple Halo games.

4. Great battlefields. Lots of debris, dead bodies, and very 40K feel to it.

5. Love the online multi-player stuff. My brother lives three thousand kms away - me in Winnipeg (middle of Canada) and him on the East Coast, but we can still play together.

The bad:

1. Limited use of races. The Dawn of War series included as many races as possible. I would have liked to fight Eldar, Dark Eldar, etc.

2. Limited choice of characters online. Space Marine or Chaos Space Marine. Not even Terminators?

The game really feels a bit half-finished and pushed out the door, the campain was fun while it lasted but why oh why was there no Co-op? and multiplayer...

For my part, as I don't have a good enough connection for multiplayer I can't comment on that aspect, but as for the single player i've got to admit that I found it fun and fairly original but it did have some major flaws that made it feel less 40K than I had expected. All round I thought the game was great - especially the Melee/Ranged transition!

However, there were a few issues that bugged me about the SP campaign:

1. It was fairly short and while each mission was individually good, I didn't get much of a sense of a planet spanning conflict
2.I didn't get a sense of progression in the whole thing. It seems like you turned up on day one, fought off a random ork assault and by day 7 you'd defeated a whole ork Waaagh!, a Chaotic incursion and saved a titan - which is of course what happened but there seemed to be no real element of a higher strategy.
3. NPC's were pretty good in terms of individuals, but you definitely don't get a sense of being in a whole Chapter! I couldn't understand why a larger proportion of NPC's weren't included in either the battles or even just dotted around the inter-battle areas. Also in your squad, I felt the two NPC's were woefully underpowered, literally all they did was draw attention to you!
4. The areas you fought in were practically all alike, with the exception of the desert area. - but obviously, being on a forge world I can understand this.
5. I was expecting more of a destructible environment - where bolter shells really do blow open a fist sized hole in an orks chest or a wall.

Don't get me wrong, despite all this I really enjoyed the game for what it was and these were just very minor niggles. The things I'd like to see in a sequel - if they ever get round to it would be:

1. A wider range of weapons - flamers, master crafted weapons missile launchers etc.
2. Customization of Armour/Weapons to make them more personal - Dark Millenium promises this, but who knows....
3. A sort of progress - possibly from scout through Devastator/Assault/Tactical/Veteran (Though as a different character)
4. Termie Armour! Even as a one off mission
5. A wider storyline over a longer period of time.
6. Larger variety of enemies and the inclusion of vehicals.
7. Different Chapters - Imperial Fists? Salamanders?
8.And finally a huge variety of battle fields, with wide open spaces for huge battles.

So all in all I'm probably asking them to put in millions of pounds into development of a huge game. It's not going to happen, but it's good to wish. Nevermind though, for the first 40K game that literally puts you into the heart of battle - I thought it was pretty epic

Playing through the campaign again for like the 3rd or 4th time... it is actually quite good.

Other than preferring to see a few more varied areas, I think the campaign is quite excellent. Although I wish the Chaos SM AI was a bit better

I feel like the game was kicked out the door somewhat prematurely, as they wanted to get it out before Gears of War 3 took on the entire third person sci-fi shooter marketplace. The game still sold fairly well, and was by no means a failure.

I would have loved to see more branching out into the 40k universe as well, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. For one, this is a simple gateway drug into the universe of 40k. They're not going to include every race under the sun. Console games are very, very accessible, and they had to keep it as such. There also was a fairly limited budget that they did a lot with. I'd say the game was a success, but I'll always wish for something even better.

Well, to be fair, it's hard to insert so amny races without making it feel contrived. Maybe if they had gotten rid of Chaos as the late game major enemy though...

Can anyone say warhammer 40k: battlefront??? Man that would be cool!
Neway I felt as though space marine was too repetitive. Move to this room kill guys move on to next room kill those guys. It was flat out fun but it was just wAaaaay too repetitive.

not like space marine. Granted that is the premise for all shooters. But at least in Call of Duty or battlefield 3 there is a different flavor for each level and for sections of the level. Unlike Space Marine which had you doing the same stuff on the same forge world for 5 hours until you run into chaos, which surprises you at first but you do the same thing for the next few hours. There were no drivable vehicles, no switching between characters to get a different perspective, and no game play changes through out the entire story.

Do you disagree?

The switching between characters in call of duty isn't all that impressive or a really good change of pace. It basically just means "I have to use the AK47 this time instead of a good weapon".

At least it's something. I mean you're saying that space marine wouldn't have been better if there was a level where you were a sentinel pilot or perhaps a sanctioned psyker? That wouldn't have made the game more fun?

"nah I'm good with the stereotypical space marine captain with no depth to him" lol its like they went down to a hobby shop and asked the manager what the stereotypical space marine was.

"he's gotta be an ultramarine for sure! At the same time he has to be stern and heroic but with a strange English accent"

I agree. As much as I love Chaos, it's gotten to the point where every single 40K game that comes out is "You're a Space Marine. You trust an Inquisitor/Battle Brother. That Inquisitor/Battle Brother is Chaos Touched." And that's just boring.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

I agree I saw that coming the minute Titus met the inquisitor. I would've liked to play as the tau or Orks. The thing that pissed me off the most is that you were the ultramarines. I like the ultramarines more than the next guy but I like unpredictable and surprising original things as opposed to stereotypical an unoriginal ideas that I've seen a million times.

There was no depth at all in terms o story, the gameplay was extremely repetitive, and the characters were blander than a dehydrated cracker. Honestly it was fun for the first 20 minutes but after that it sucked. I'd rather Ruck 12 miles than have to play a whole level of boringness that is space marine.

You ALL would be liars of you said the game had any replay value whatsoever. The multiplayer could keep you interested for a little while however it was an arena style play that just didn't suit my tastes. As one the last remaining original rts players I would've liked to see more squad tactics which made me fall in love with the 40k tabletop

As someone stated above the game would've been immaculate if you could be a hero amoungst npcs and other hero players. Imagine being able to jump in valkyries or land raiders then fighting chaos or tau. Just picture a full scale battle then add a multiplayer aspect to it. Even if you're losing you will always feel like a badass since they can slaughter enemy npcs. This is possible and feasible yet no game company has the balls to step out and do something new or against the tide. And we all know DMO will be just has bad as space Marine (if it isn't cancelled)

Space marine sucked overall. Tell me I'm wrong
