I play the armies that I play because they interest me. That is, Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, and Daemons (yes, they're on round bases, and I am aware that I'm "doing it wrong" thankyouverymuch). I started Grey Knights, but quickly realized that pretty models only go so far...Honestly, every GK build that's good bores me to tears. Now I'm trying to get rid of them.

So, in answer to the question you actually asked, I would only quit an army if they made them uninteresting to me. For example, if I was really really into Pariahs and the Nightbringer and the whole Sarah Conner killing Terminator thing, the new codex probably would have made me quit.

Anyways, I'm just hoping that my Tzeentch/Slaanesh Daemons get some love soonish. I'm good otherwise

I lol'd at the GK, BA, and Necrons sucking.

SM isn't even that bad in 6th.

I have five armies. I didn't collect a single one of them because of the rules.

Orks - Awesome fun converting vehicles to be Orky
Tau - The hammerhead and Firewarriors are just too awesome looking.
Chaos - Emperors Children - Metal Damonettes Yummy. - Actually this one I did start partially because of the rules. So many options to create your own unique army. 3.5 Chaos was the best codex ever written for a Vet type player.
Space Wolves - Awesome looking new Wolf Pack models and I always wanted to field a Landraider of some sort.
DE - Have you seen the sexy new models? Have you?

Now, I did drop my Chaos army when the 4th ed book came out simply because it stripped my army down into a flavorless blob of bleh (I did actually play 3 games under the new book. Won - 2, tied - 1, didn't have a shred of the fun that the old army presented). That wasn't a tweek, but a train wreck. If the new Chaos codex doesn't allow my EC to exist as EC, then I'm done with Chaos forever. Going to append my 3.5 codex to match the new 6th ed. USRs and just play friendly games. I have a fully painted 2500 point army. Who, in a friendly Saturday hang out enviroment, is going to say no? Not a single Siren psychic power in site, and a DP with a 3+/5++ save... ohh noes... the Cheese!

Now I wish I kept some of them. I still say Tyranids are going to be 6th Editions hidden gem.

I did that with GK, when they came out I stopped playing them. I just collected.

And when the IG codex came out I avoided Vets in Chimeras and Vendettas.

Honestly kinda waiting for them to get nerfed.

This. I like Cruddace codex for example. If my Nids get OP I'll switch to my Nurgle (oh wait...) or play with a weakened build. Uphill battle ftw.

Only if it got boring. I chose space wolves a long time before I'd even seen a codex, and will stick with them even if a new one sucks. But if they get boring for whatever reason, I have no problems swapping to something more fun for awhile. I'm in the game for the fun after all.

I'd probably stop playing it ... and switch to one of my other armies - but I did that regardless of what codex was on top when I did play 40k (I had 4 armies).

Then again, I continued to play with my DH after codex and rules editions left it behind in the dust, despite it being considered "outclassed" and I wouldn't play with a CSM codex if it was the next best thing to sliced bread (I've never liked their "Rargh, I'm evil just because" bad-teenager vibe).

Been playing my Tau since 2004.

Played all through 5th ed.

Will continue to play despite games against a good 'crons player being some what "fultile". get it
Will play my Tau in this edition(That while it boosted the Tau's ability, has to much randomness and other things that I will refrain from discussing for fear of thread derailment)
Will play my Tau untill a new codex comes out.
Will play them afterwards if they retain/regain their intended playstyle, fluff and over-all feel.

Will retire them only if the Fluff-killer gets his hands on them and makes them a protectorate of the Ultra-marines that has Lightening claw drones, Hammerheads that shoot Thunder Hammers or turns them into xenos guard. Things like this will have me creating one of the largest Tau Display case armies ever seen.

Define sucked. If by sucked you mean was difficult to win with, then no. I don't play to win, I enjoy winning, but I play simply because I enjoy trying out tactics and seeing my unique army on the TT. If Guard was bumped down to Nid levels of suck then I would be sad, might even start a second army, but I wouldn't completely abandon them. If by sucked you mean a major playstyle change that I don't like (for example the only useful build being flyer spam supported by anti-flyer weapons), or a major fluff change that I hate (can't think of how they would mess up the IG fluffwise) then perhaps. While winning isn't everything, constantly losing because I don't want to buy an ugly model would piss me off.

I must agree. I choose my armies mostly because of the models though. With my marines I mostly play a full scout list even though I could field a lot of other stuff from the codex that I own. My IG Catachan list ain't too powerful but I love to play with them. If the new codexes would come out bad... I'd still stick to them.

That depends if the next C:SM dex is an improvement over the current dex.

If not, then probably.

There are too many factors that go into making a strong list for me to summarize why I don't appreciate the current list - and YMMV - but 5th edition Marines are weak in comparison to other flavors of Marines.

[IMO of course - it could be that I'm just a terrible player.]

As I have told a friend for most of this edition QUIT WHINING!!!! Seriously if you want to go 'Oh poor poor pitiful me ' then go with an older dex, I pay through the nose for heavy weapons, the only thing I have is deathwing, which tbh gets boring fast. Yes, I am one of those crazies that actually fields those overpriced tactical marines, and assault marines. In all you C:SM players have it fairly luck to the old dex players.

My point is they are not the weakest variant of SM, if you want that go for Black Templar, or Dark Angels. Besides, if you can live through the weak phase I have my doubts you will regret it especially when they are strong again.

Naturally.

Anyway, I >have< lived through it, for the last edition. I said there were a lot of factors that go into making a strong list, and also (in extremely truncated form that I now expand to the following) that I may be terrible at deciphering what is most appropriate for the current meta.

It is a new edition of the game.

We know a new C:SM codex will be arriving shortly.

The original poster asked a question, and I provided an answer - the end.

I tend to go the other way, actually. If a new codex for my army comes out and it is considered too strong, I switch armies.

I prefer to kill my opponents with an outdated, generally considered to be "weak" Codex. Anyone can with a "good" army, let alone a OP one.
Where's the challenge in that?

I not only would, I have. When the current CSM abomination came out, my World Eaters and 1K Sons went straight to the shelf. Sisters of Battle, same. Necrons, same, regardless of how allegedly "good" they are in 6th, for reasons set forth elsewhere and done to death by now (I'll just say that the Flying Toilet Seat is a perfect embodiment IMO of everything wrong with this codex, or any Ward output for that matter). Prior to 6th I was down to mostly playing Space Marines and/or IG in Apocalypse. I most likely will sit 6th out altogether, but if for some reason I don't, I expect nothing like an overall improvement in any future CSM codex, or IG, or Tyranids (my other armies), nor Space Marines. So I'll probably stick with Space Marines. But more likely I'll try to find others who prefer earlier editions and codices and play that way.

I've done it several times. I played eldar saim-hann craftworld, and then GW took that away.
Then I used the Chaos 3.5 dex to make an Alpha legion army. When that dex got destroyed I switched to SM, since the traits allowed me to play more like Alpha Legion then the chaos dex ever did.
When the SM codex got stale I moved to nids. I really got into the big bugs and treated them like the critters from Aliens.
When cruddance came I borrowed my friends wolf army and am now changing back to nids for 6th. I don't see anything wrong with it. A lot of old chaos or nids players changed armies for a while.
For those of you that don't switch and think it is wrong, what do you play? I'm curious

Ive played Blood Angels since when you had to roll for every unit to get Death Company, Mephistion wasn't an uber mega kill everything guy and before Librarian Dreadnoughts, and when DC dreads were for the Flesh Tearers only, and to actualy use the army, you needed two codexs. And I love the new codex.

I don't see any codex as sucking, but as a challenge to see how good you are as a general. Almost anyone can with with the "best codex ever", but it takes fine skill to win with "the worst".

in Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion. This has actually happened in a game. Hell, a marine can throw his bolt shells and do more damage than by shooting his boltgun

Grakmar wrote:I think it depends on the history of the army.

For example, if you've been playing BA for the past few years, enjoying the OPness of the codex, and the next codex comes out and is terrible, tough luck, you stick it out.

But, if you've been playing Tau for the past few years, and been suffering through a terrible cycle for you, and the next codex comes out and is terrible, you've already shown your loyalty and willingness to tough it out, so you're free to switch.

I disagree with the sentiment that if you played a really powerful army and its new codex was awful you are morally obligated to stick with it. Armies are ways in which you can enjoy WH40k, and if you'll enjoy playing with a different army more, by all means, switch armies.

Back on topic. As a blob Guard player, if in the next codex, the "competitive" things in the Guard army, like Chimeltavets and Vendettas were considerably weaker, I would be happy- those are the things that give Guard a bad reputation. However, if my specific list is destroyed by some change-such as a *shudder* return to 6pt Guardsmen I might make Marines or Eldar my primary army.

I've played Dark Angels since 2nd Edition. In 2nd our codex was low on the power tier compared to things the Eldar, Space Wolves. IG and Nids could pull off. Our terminators were expensive and only our bikes and speeders really made us stand out compared to things made with Codex: Ultramarines (then all you bastages took our unique speeder, BT still whining about the Crusader can get in line behind me; my rage was here first :p ). I played them as is.

Our 3rd Edition codex was worse. Our bikes were overpriced because they got a 6+ invuln save, our terminators were even worse. 52 points for a model with a 2+ save and no invulnerable save. The "upgrade" for terminators was issued in a WD some time after release; but I still had to face Eldar starcannon spam without it. I soldiered on through that.

Eventually we got an updated 2nd Edition of the 3rd Edition codex and it was a bit better. Things were still bloody expensive and we were still worse than vanilla but I could finally hope to use my Deathwing successfully. I continued to play.

4th came out and the FAQ basically said "LOL ignore most of your codex and just use the vanilla one". For the first time in Dark Angels history we had a list that was workable and possible just as powerful as vanilla. But then, we weren't using the Dark Angels codex much anymore. Around this time I took a break to wait for a proper codex.

In 2006(07?) the new one came out and I gave it a whirl and even defended its more cut down stylings on the grounds of "this is what the new codices will be like", Chaos came out and got the same treatment and I was full of reassurances for this new codex brought in to the fold of codices with more simplistic rules. Oh gods how wrong I was. They dropped most of the format on the next codex (Orks I believe) and never looked back. But it was mostly fine until the new vanilla codex came out. Then the real shot in the arm came. I was used to being vanilla but with a few pricey elite options but this was something new. The options we shared with vanilla were cheaper in every way, and the extra options they got dwarfed ours in comparison. They did all-biker armies better than we did. Oh and they got equipment choices that were better (3+ invuln. storm shields, Heavy 2 CMLs, etc.).

Needless to say I was a little disenfranchised by this. I became a proponent of the "don't take any vanilla units, just take Deathwing and Ravenwing" for a while after that. But that was bloody boring to play and I ended up not using some 50-60 models in my collection for a while. And more than that the actual Deathwing and Ravenwing paled in comparison to similar choices the vanilla list could field (and later the bloody Space Wolves). So after playing my army since 1996 I finally said "screw it." And branched out.

I first started by fielding my Deathwing as Loganwing and had fun finally being able to pull out some of my more esoteric models that had been invalidated over the years (had a few DW with combi-plasma weapons). I had fun basically making a fan-written re-skin of the Space Wolves codex and ended up writing quite a bit about what essentially became alternate reality Dark Angels who had kept more traditions from Caliban. I think some of it may be floating around B&C still. But either way I hadn't had so much fun with my Dark Angels in a while.

This eventually turned in to me writing my own personal fandex for Dark Angels (this one being more traditional and canon-affirming than my SW-dex reskin). But I soon realized that 5th wasn't for me and dropped the game for a while.

Now, coming back in with 6th and starting fresh I have decided to use the Dark Angels codex again though I am praying the DA update is soon since it is still pretty limited in viable builds. I am hoping that the 6th Edition codex will be the first time Dark Angels actually get a codex that compares favourably to the rest of the Space Marine lists for once. I've been waiting for over a decade for this to occur. If not then I will probably just end up writing my own again. But in any case I doubt I'd pick up a new army instead. I've played Dark Angels and only Dark Angels for 15+ years and I can't see a reason to branch out at this point.
