I much prefer American steaks cos I go to vegas and get the big ass ones that are as big as an elephants ear! I prefer cheap gakky meat with sauce on and as thick as a phone book, she likes a small cut au natural.

Its whatever floats your boat I reckon!

I'm sure you could go to a butchers and ask for a "big ass" cut of British beef which would offer both of you the best of both worlds.

There is. But when talkign about popularity, usually the most popular stuff is crap because it's cheap vomit pushed out by Wal-Mart.

And as we all know, for most people excellent food is great, but cheap food is better!

Personally I'd rather skip out on cable and other such nonsense and eat better, instead, but YMMV.

Big box store beef that was carved from cows that spend their days on feed lots eating crap and then gets shipped across the country is going to taste like crap no matter what country you are in. Although that is also a symptom of being a huge country.

We always buy our meat local and humanely raised on pastures eating grass and roaming around.

And for everybody wanting some specific american cuisine, I present to you this:

Deep fried chicken on a waffle with Mable syrup!

I would argue that that dish isn't helping my point with this thread... nice try, and thanks for the help though.

Actually, most traditional American foods aren't complex at all. The reality is that traditional American cuisine is very much like the traditional peasant cuisine of Europe, simple and in some way satisfying. Haute cuisine evolves over time, and generally in concurrence with the prosperity of the nation in question (the more complex the dish, the more expensive it is), with a fair bit of concern regarding cultural preferences. This is why you see high cooking dominated by French influence, and why you're only just now starting to see truly complex American food.

That said, its arguable that the wide availability of diverse ingredients has made it virtually impossible for any country to really claim a cuisine as its own, or at least made it impossible for America to develop a truly unique haute cuisine; though molecular gastronomy comes pretty close.

Though, on thinking, you might also consider high American cuisine to be, broadly, fusion food in that we have the fairly unique (both cultural and economic) opportunity to draw on an incredible number of culinary traditions in order to see which ones work together. I mean, where else can you get Korean BBQ tacos?

Nothing complex about cajun or tex-mex? A lot of New Orleans dishes have some complex flavors, no?

Some of our high-end stuff is fusion, too. Taking a couple of different countries' cuisines and mingling them in creative ways.

When I say complexity I'm speaking to the number and cost of ingredients. You can certainly get good, complex flavor from a few cheap ingredients. Ratatouille is a good example, though I imagine the original French version was less tasty due to the poor availability of seasoning and spices.

I realized that before reading your post, and edited mine. Though I think the real prevalence of fusion cuisine, in the complex sense, is still fairly recent. Tex-mex has only fairly recently come into its own, and even more recently as high cooking. Though Cajun, which is probably the first form of fusion cuisine to take hold in the US, is quite dated in terms of a unique style.

I sure like salmon. I'm not sure if America can lay claim on it, but there are plenty of recipes here for it. My favorite comes from the Pacific. Wood fired is the best. Cajuin or smoked with applewood, a glazed lemon on top... mmmm.

There's a lot of fish from where I come from, and they're all healthy, but Salmon is at least my delicacy. When I have the money, I'm moving to the Northwest just to eat more salmon, and play 40k with the guys at Relic.

When my family was living in Seattle, and hosted big gatherings and feasts at our home, folks would bring stuff to contribute. Some of the poorest folks regularly brought smoked salmon, because it was so plentiful that you found it regularly in food pantries.

Heres a very traditional American recipe, updated for modern cooking utensils and appliances, you could still make it in a pot over a fire if you want, and use rendered fat instead of oil. Enjoy.

Three Sisters Stew

l tablespoon olive or cannola oil
l large onion, sliced
l clove garlic, crushed
l jalapeno chili, finely chopped
4 cups yellow summer squash, sliced (about 1 pound)
4 cups zucchini, cut into l inch pieces (about 2 medium)
4 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 1 large)
3 cups green beans, cut into l inch pieces (about 1 pound)
l cup frozen whole kernel corn
l teaspoon dried thyme leaves
2 l6-ounce cans kidney beans, undrained

Heat oil in Dutch oven over medium heat. Cook onion, garlic and chili in oil about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onion is tender. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook over low heat 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently until squash is tender

Yield: 6 servings
Nutrition per serving: calories 310, percent calories iron fat 12%, sodium 360 mg, cholesterol 0 mg.

Okra seems pretty American.

I have lived here 15 years and I still have not figured out what it really is.

It looks like a hairy pepper thing and it is slimy when you cook it. Everything about it seems to say "don't eat me".

I just looked up Okra on Wikipedia, and, interestingly enough, it appears to be eaten pretty damn much everywhere except Europe. I have never eaten it, as I think it's far more prominent in Southern US cooking, and I've been south of the Mason Dixon Line twice in my entire life (not counting my time in LA, which is not exactly "The South"). And that was DC and Orlando, Florida, neither of which are really "The South" either.

Okra can be cooked in numerous ways.

A swift stir-frying or cooking with some lemon juice helps ensure the mucilage doesn't leave the plant, while others prefer to cook it in a longer way that ensures that it leaks out, becoming gooey or slimy.

I've actually thought that about a couple of common food items.

"Hey, I'm going to eat the slime that comes out of those spheres that birds gak out."

"Hey, I'm gonna drink the fluid that comes out of the sacs on that cow's stomach when I squeeze 'em."

Actually, I think George Carlin said that last one, but it's a damn good point.

However a transgender vibe is a bit harsh surely?!

She is certainly a decent looking bird. I am a firm believer that those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones though, so please, post a photo of your wife/girlfriend for us all to see and we shall all take a vote on who of the two is the more attractive.

Same can be said for Cashews: "Hey guys when we touch the seed inside this thing it gives us welts and makes us itch... Lets cook it and see what happens!"

"Athough a nut in the culinary sense, in the botanical sense the nut of the cashew is a seed. The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the more well known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Properly roasting cashews destroys the toxin, but it must be done outdoors as the smoke (not unlike that from burning poison ivy) contains urushiol droplets which can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening, reactions by irritating the lungs." - Wikipedia

Yes folks, the Cashew tree is related to Poison Ivy, and someone had to cook it and eat it, even after it gave them welts and itchyness
