Yea but is that a metric crapton or English crapton?

No one's forcing them to pay up.

Indeed they are not. They can break their contract and be removed from the NCAA. That would over time cost them far more than $60 million, but it is an option. They are choosing to comply to be part of an exclusive club.

Frazzled wrote:Again, a simple call from the governor should do it.

Because now you're all about government interfering with private industry?

So you're saying in Texas people would be only be mildly bothered that an institution actively covered up child rape to save face, but fining them in honor of a contract for actively covering up child rape would get people so upset as to ignore jurisdiction and shoot animals? What a strange place where fining gets people worked up more than child rape.

So when it comes to "Government swooping an unilaterally annulling contracts with private entities"

I can put Frazzled down as "Pro"

When a private entity is trying to confisctae public taxpayer dollars, you bet your ass.

No, I'm saying the NCAA is some pissant multibillion dollar corporate entity, thats designed to regulate "amateur ( ) college sports. There is a legal argument (that would win) that they are not empowered to investigate non sports criminal activity. Crimes are investigated by the justice system, not freaking Sports Illustrated.

Every other penalty I could care less about. Hell, ban them from football, forever. Its the fine that gets me.

Somewhere in south-central England.

To put the fine in perspective, Penn State made $53 million profit from their football team in 2010 and another $24 million from merchandise and stuff.

They would not have made that money without their NCAA membership.

Penn State. Penn is the Ivy League school in Philly.

Point of clarification here. PSU is a "state-related" university, not a state university (ironically). Pitt and Temple also fall into this category. They get <10% of their budget from funding from the Commonwealth. So they're nearly private. Pitt was private at one time, and I've heard they kicked around the idea of going fully private again since the Commonwealth gives them so little funding anymore.

I'm actually half-willing to believe that about Texas.

The bizarre, non-sense way someone is acting is leading me to believe it too. Then again, we shouldn't judge Texas from one crazy.

I know, its horrible to think that someone who actually pays taxes in contrast to many of the nattering nabobs of negativity on this board gets all exited about a fine which will be paid partially by taxpayer dollars.

No in Texas we don't cotton to child molesters. We also don't wait for the Little League regulatory bureau to be the beacon of justice in the situation.

Having said thats, its a Yankee college. Burn the place down for all I care.

2X internetz to those who can reference nabobs in both a Presidential quote and a movie quote.
Also 2X internetz on those who can reference governor and coyote without googling.

I work for the government, if I have to pay any fine it is paid with taxpayer money.

Can I put you on speed dial if anybody tries to make me pay a fine or a late fee?

From an AP story...

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett demanded assurances from the university that taxpayer money would not be used. Penn State said it would cover it with its athletics reserve fund and capital maintenance budget and, if necessary, borrow money.

I think it's pretty clear that the corruption at Penn State is not just limited to a single coach, or even just the football program, or even just the athletics department. The idea that allowing a child rapist to continue his vile acts for the sake of winning a few football games is absolutely disgusting.

The NCAA let Penn State off super easy.

I'm still hoping that Pennsylvania shuts the entire school down.

You're going to shut the university down for one coach? Thats not sane.

Indeed, I wouldn't shut down a university for the actions of one coach. I would punish it pretty heavily if it allowed/sanctioned said coach just for the sake of winning games though! Still think "Shutting it down" is too far in either situation.

Agreed on all points Brit Sherman. Good to say the governor saying "hands off the taxpayer moolah" too.

Shutting down the university for the actions of one coach would be totally insane.

But, it was that one coach who committed those crimes, as well as the head coach who covered it up with the help of the athletic director and the school's senior vice president, and president. And the entire board of directors were completely complicit in the entire thing.

The entire organization is diseased with this idea that football is more important than raping children.

I agree wack em all. That still ht nothing to do with the rest of the school and its thousands of students. Something tells me the physics geeks weren't involved...

Fair point.

Okay, the state fires (or demands the resignation of) the entire upper administration. Students and professors are unaffected.

That work for everyone?

They didn't investigate it. They are administering punishment to a member organization as a result of a criminal investigation, and an independent report funded by the state of Pennsylvania; most likely under some kind of a behavioral clause in the membership agreement.

Grakmar wrote:The idea that allowing a child rapist to continue his vile acts for the sake of winning a few football games is absolutely disgusting.

It makes perfect financial sense insofar as the parents of the children don't bring civil suit against the school (which they may yet do). As it stands, even with the punishment, Penn State absolutely earned more money in covering up the acts than they may have lost in the absence of a key coach.

Grakmar wrote:

You would still be punishing students and faculty. You can't eliminate the entire administrative board and not expect it to have a negative impact on the functioning of the school.
