Hi Dakka. So, I have been playing a few games with my Sternguard recently, and they have done ok. So, I would like to try out a Vanguard themed army (Tourney) and wondered how they would work in a 1000 point Tournament. I would be running one HQ from the Badab war that allows Vanguard to count as scoring units, and makes Flamers and Heavy Flamers TL. So, how would my Vanguard best be used in a 1k Tourney?

There are some good responses here on Badab leaders. However at 1000 points Vanguard, as good as they are, may just be a shade expensive.

Here is why.

Marines need more horde control than bolters.

We need to reliably stop more than one rhino or serpent in a turn of shooting.

We now need flier defence.

So lets start adding that up.

Two bare tac squads on foot 340, or 440 with basic HQ.

Lets say TLAC dread for multirole transport/jetbike/some flier protection and we at 565.

Cant go past TFC at this points level, we at 665 with 335 left to spend.

Think through what we can have here. We could do with more troops, would love another TFC to really burn orcs/nids, could do with transports for troops, would like upgrades on troops and HQ. would also be reaally nice to squeeze in some heavy anti armour capabilities. Failing that spend it all on tactical terminators w CML and CF and its hard to go wrong.

In contrast, lets say we take 6 vanguard w jetpacks, we bump power weapon to TH/SS and take a fist and MBs, ie can take a man down, win a weak challenge and still reliably triumph then go wreck a tank, thats 240 points from memory. A pod with locator on tacs is another 45, taking our origional total to 750.

Its doable, however you have 27 power armour models, a dread and TFC with another 250 points to spend (less as im sure those IA HQs are more than 100 points), meaning you really will need to work those vanguard every game like a maestro.

Definately cool and gutsy, and if you have comp scores you will do well, and get cudos and develop as a general for it. Me, i say go for it.
