You could do the same thing with a 90-point 5-man Tac squad, except it would at least be scoring.

- Deathskulls - 6150

That is true. But sadly their options probably aren't good enough for that transport.

They wouldn't have to take it. put them in a rhino and have it deploy turn 1 next to the unit you want to be in the rhino.
They disembark and the other unit embarks.

But that would mean you are paying at least 100 points for a rhino. WHY ARE YOU PAYING 100 POINTS FOR A RHINO!?!?!!!

Oh, and the assault squad doesn't have to deploy in the rhino.

Because if i take dedicated transport with tactical marines it is 125 points.
or 115 with scouts.

Assualt marines are useful depending on how you play. I send them into the thick of the fighting to slow down the enemy until the rest of my marines reach assualt range.

I also load the sergeant with Melta bombs and a power fist and turn the unit into a Tank hunting squad.

I play Black Templars with AACNMTO this allows my Assualt marines to re-roll hits in assualt, this reduces the likelyhood of them being completley useless.

I took 10 assault marines with 2 plasma pistols and a thunder hammer into a tournament and found they were excellent.

Can i throw them at a unit of enemy elites? No, certainly not, but they could certainly clean up or support here.

I think the SGT with thunderhammer and stormshield in a good sized unit, i still like 10, has a lot to offer.

Forget the really big nasties and think troops.mthey are excellent at taking down mid tier units before moving into the backield to make a mess of support units.

10 with 2 plasma pistols, thunder hammer and stormshield is 265 and that is a very effective unit. Add in the HQ with jump pack and even more so.

There is a lot of chatter about speeders here. I have used them a lot and they are just so fragile. Compare 10 marines and a speeder, short of a vindicator or serious CC monster, 10 marines are pretty hard to kill. Speeders are super easy to kill, even if slightly harder now, a comparison between the two is a very long bow to draw.

Finally the whole idea of jump pack marines is excellent. They are aggressive, you dont care if they die as they not troops, if you hit a character with that TH he is splattered or at least I1 and with a SS you could comfortably challenge mid range leaders like SGTs, longfang leaders and unit champions.

Speeders are fragile, but let's not compare a single speeder to a massive assault squad.

For those points, you could field 3-5 speeders, depending on weapon options. Which will take a significant amount of fire to remove from the table.

I've had better luck with small squads in a harassment role. Whenever I field a full 10 man squad it ends up drawing more fire then it can handle, and gets blown to chunks. You experience, obviously, differs from mine.

You are right nevelon, sorry i did not mean it that way.

I have three speeders in MM/HF setup, thats 210.

Are the speeders lethal? Yes. However i have always found if i used them aggressively they die very quickly. The alternate, using them to ambush something, worked better, ie hide behind a building then jump over, or deepstrike in, however that has gone wrong before too and the speeders then still get hammered. All in all they like a super hunterkiller missile.

Now assault marines are durable and solidly effective. As above, they not elite, but they are marines and do pack a good amount of punch. Due to their speed they need to be dealt with by your opponent aggressively or they can cause all sorts of mischief.

I have never run two flamers however that would be pretty good too i would imagine, especially if you threw in a jump pack libby with avenger.
