Sometimes its all state of mind, if you look at it from one angle its just a different game. So he likes playing small killpoint slugfests? Look at it as a challenge and take it up with him! If you want to play the actual game- play with someone else, or alternate if you need to compromise.
Just because somebody wants to modify the rules, doesn't mean it can't be fun- tournament games change the book objectives all the time for custom scenarios and balance. You'll just have to build an army suited to the new rules- or view it as a good challenge for your own
tac tournie list.
One of the reasons
40k is so fun is because its easy to change the scenario or mission objectives to taste. So his friend doesn't like objectives (clearly he doesn't play eldar- I love me lots of scattered objectives!) But that doesn't mean its impossible to have fun playing him.
