At least it wasn't a big bomb, or big budget. And it had some legitimate post filming woes. I think we'll get to see the trilogy and maybe the next one will get some marketing.

Loved it and it's a buyer on Blue-ray for me. Yes it was pretty simple but I liked that.

As to the city, I think they were trying to convey that the city stretches from Boston to Washington DC.

For the nostalgic craziness I think many are not into that type of thing now so they went with what most people would like so they could make at least some money.

I think it's good they got away from the nostalgia, I was just watching the "Behind the scenes" stuff for Halo 4 and one of the Dev guys said something along the lines "People say they want another Halo game, but I think what they really want is not just another Halo game, but something that touches on the familiar things we love but expands and grows it from what it was."

I think that's excellent advice for ANY franchise. Yes you need to respect all that's come before, but you still need to evolve it. Still need to make something more out of it. I think that goal of evolving an IP definitely happened with Dredd and that it worked quite well.

When you say "nostalgia" are you talking about the Stallone movie? How many people here actually read 2000AD or the Megazine?

The screenwriter planned a Dredd trilogy. He based it on a 50mm take at the box office, but I figure lions ate will probably throw some more money at him.

I read 2000AD back in the day. The ABC in the Stallone flick was for people like me.

I had to google it when I got home because it was nagging me. As soon as I started reading it I remembered how much I disliked that arc.

Surely not! I see it in newsagents in the UK all the time.
I hope I can find this in a cinema in Dusseldorf, I grew up with Dredd and I think it probably warped my fragile little mind in all sorts of ways. My brother and I were really excited about this, more so than the batman movie.

The nearest comic shop for me is 2 bus journeys and doesn't sell it anymore.

Haven't spotted it in any of the newsagents in the hellhole I live in.

Wow, what awful place must you live in to be in the UK and not have access to 2000AD? I can even get it regularly, albeit via special order, here in Richmond.

I saw the trailer both online and at the cinema and it did nothing for me. I was preying that the cinema one would pull me in, but it didn't. I will watch it when it comes out on Blu Ray though as I do love JD.

Having just recently read a ton of back issues of 2000AD the comic book version of JD, and his world, was too fresh in my mind for this to work. Karl Urban works as Dredd, but as soon as you pull away from the helmet close up, then that's where it ends for me.

I really do think they should of gone down the CGI route for this film. It would of meant that they could of recreated the MC1 of the comics and kitted out the Judges in the uniform we are used to, no having to comprise on it as it's not practical in real life. My big concern is that they will be put off making any more and having read somewhere today that Dredd has failed, so far , to recoup it's costs, I think it could be the end of him. Perhaps a Rogue Trooper film could help term this around?

I've stopped getting 2000AD recently because the Dredd stories (i.e., the only ones I care about if I'm honest) are so bland. The movie was a breath of fresh air after months and months of slogging through the comics. The movie put me in mind of what I liked about the comic in the first place, which reading the comic was making me forget.

Who is writing them these days? Wagner's stuff was still pretty good when I was reading it last. Which was admittedly a few years ago.

There is the Judge Minty film that has been made and the preview to that looks more like the JD world we know. Here's the Facebook link:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Judge-Minty/112829465468381" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> https://www.facebook.com/pages/Judge-Minty/112829465468381

I still love the original movie....but only because I thought it was pretty cool when I was a kid.

And I saw the movie opening weekend in the US...and I loved every second of it. I seriously couldn't have asked for a better remake. One thing I loved - the Judge uniforms. They were rubber, leather, (probably) kevlar, and very realistic. Also, Anderson's uniform was more or less the same as Dredd's...no part of it showing off her shape/body. It also brought a sense of realism that spandex and giant golden pauldrons can't give you. As stated earlier, I thought Ma-ma was an awesome villan, mostly because she was just fledgling drug lord; nothing over the top. Really, the only thing I didn't like was that Mega-City 1 didn't seem over-crowded...

tl;dr - I loved almost everything about the movie.

It's a shame this movie isn't doing well. Not just for the movie itself, but because it'll make it that much longer until we get another R rated action movie.

Action movies are getting more bland, more dull, and it's because the R rating is seen as a box office disaster in Hollywood. Films like 300 proved them a little wrong, but a lot of other box office flubs like Dredd are proving that maybe Hollywood is right to be wary of making more violent, sex filled material.

So instead we stories which rarely deviate from 'save the world from generic bad guys', and do it with wire-fu, running from explosions in slow motion, and car chases. Because unless you want to engage with anything that might score a dreaded R that's about all you can do.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

And that's why I'm worried. They might water down any potential sequel to the point of it being completely worthless.
