A good help to getting used to the game is Battlecollege. Its a site that breaks down each unit in the game. Now going to the learning curve it took me a quite a few games to understand how play tactically but I never really understood the statline until this summer but keep in mind I really starlted playing about last spring so I'm about around at my seventh game.

It also tends to have incorrect information as well. It's pretty widely derided as a source of serious information in my circles. If you want more information, you might check out the Muse On Minis forums. A lot of the really good tournament players (i'm not one of them) hang out there.

edit: Would probably help if I posted the link too. http://museonminis.com/forums/index.php

As I played the componant games that WM/H is compared to, (WHFB, 40k, MtG, D+D 3.5) I found the transition to be fairly simple and the learning curve to not be steep. As others have said, experience trumps models. Unlike WHFB where you could show up wih Demons on your first fight and expect to win, a noob showing up with a tournament level list will still get beaten out by a tourny level player shuffling his stat card collection and drawing to 35.

The turn order thing takes a bit of getting used to, as does the notion that half of a unit can fight a melee, the other half can shoot, all models in a unit could shoot different targets if they wanted, and that you can kill our own models if you want (and there are plenty of reasons to do so!)

6th edition lands on June 23rd!

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

I kill my own models all the time. Whelps are quite nice at getting killed, and the occaisional charge lane blocking.

I love using Curse of Shadows on my own guys so something behind them can charge thru them. No one sees that one coming.

I shot carver in the back of the head with my Razorback crew the other day. I was trying to clear up enough of the stupid revenant crew to charge Terminus...it didn't work out too well.
