Australia is a land filled with Australium, a substance that turns all who go near it into big, strong, handsome moustachioed men. Even women.

And that is why Australian politics are terrible.

Oh, so I did! Thank you for pointing that one out.

What you need is governance by the supreme leader that is the almighty and benevolent SANDVICH!

What we need is independence! lol I'm kidding, I don't think anyone in Australia cares less about if we own ourselves or if you guys do. Atleast no one I have ever met. Even people who are fiercely patriotic, their interest ends when it reaches who has technical control of us. They are like 'Australia is the greatest' etc etc, and then if asked about being a republic 'eh, who gives a toss'

Yes. It's a ridiculous, meaningless farce where the government and the opposition basically take shots at each other and shout at each other.

Kaldor lies, politics in Australia is only for the most respected, the most educated, the greatest amongst us.

Actually, he was spot on. Its a joke. The old speaker was the best though, he retired recently. Not the most recent one but the one before him. He woud get so goddamn pissed with people cutting in.

Also, there is this recent gem...This is the opposition leader and another guy trying to avoid voting with another member of parlaiment.

But things weren't always this bad....back in the good old days we had Prime Ministers who knew how to handle this country. Politicians we could respect.

Bob was a legend, we truly need more of him in this crazy world and I'm serious.

Bob Hawke...what a freaking champ

Toowoomba, Australia

I the original clip Gillard (lying, stupid harridan Prime Minister that she is) berrates Abbott (Opposition Leader) about his apparant hatred of women (The current Labor party meme to try and destroy him)
She does this for the whole time, in response to a motion moved by abbott to remove the speaker of the house (a registered religious minister who left the opposition so he could be speaker, so the opposition hates him, so that the govt would have a majority of 2 instead of 1, and they only get that with the support of 4 independents and a Green) after hundreds of absoultely filthy text messages about women were released at his civil trial for sexual harrassment moved by a former staffer (a gay male) and the government has already settled for $50,000 so there is definitely a good chance he is going to be hit up big time.

Within an hour of all this going down and the above clip, the speaker rocks up and resigns. It was so boss...

In Oz she has come off worst from trying to defend the indefensible. Also you would never expect any other female leader to act the way she did, trying to use gender bias to distract from incompetence.

Gillard is former lawyer, childless, and in a defacto relationship with a male hairdresser... she has had 2 affairs with married men causing them to leave their wives and children, and leads are being followed about her role in the defrauding of companies of about $500,000 (involving one of the former boyfriends)
Abbott has been married >20 years, 3 daughters, goes to aboriginal communities for a few weeks every year to teach, build houses (done for >10 years), volunteer for local fire brigade and surf life saving, and has a female chief of staff. He is a former rhodes schollar at oxford. I don't think he has done any sort of career out of politics.

It should also be noted that the speaker she is defending once hit a panic button in a toiet because he couldn't open the door (it was a sliding door, not push/pull as he thought.)

I'm rather concerned people still talk about how Gillard 'lied' about the ETS when in reality it was a part of ALP policy since at least 2010. (before the election)

Of course 'tax' is a dirty word courtesy of Abbot, despite the world not ending like the Liberal party has made it sound like, lest we forget the pensioner power bill that apparently doubled.

Gillard is former lawyer, childless, and in a defacto relationship with a male hairdresser... she has had 2 affairs with married men causing them to leave their wives and children, and leads are being followed about her role in the defrauding of companies of about $500,000 (involving one of the former boyfriends)

Someone's personal life is not how you judge their policies. For that matter you seem confused as to how Australian politics works. They are not in control of their party, if anything it's the other way around. PMs do not hold executive authority in any sense of the word.

Of course if we're going to do it your way, Abbot said virginity was a 'gift' that women shouldn't give away, or how a woman should 'consider' their partner's view when she doesn't want sex.

Can we keep this thread light hearted and focused on drinking champs like Bob Hawke, and swimming champs like Harold Holt, instead of it devolving into a labour/liberal argument? Or worse yet a Gillard/Abbott argument? If there is something worth never arguing about, then its those two

You can have him. While the guy was, before and during his time in office, about as awesome a politician can get (in between all the drinking he actually put in place some really important reforms that have greatly benefitted Australia to this day)... but after that he left his wife and got with the lady that wrote his autobiography.

Which of itself is meaningless, but then he started going on TV in interviews with his new lady, talking about the old people sex they were having, and having photoshoots in bathrobes, showing the wrinkly skin they would use to have old people sex.

It isn't enough to throw away the awesome he used to have, but enough that well, if you guys wanted him we'd be happy to let you take him, and we could be free to remember the times when Hawke didn't make us think of old people sex.

That's all just pointless gossip. Except the claims about her defrauding companies, but that's more smoke than fire at this point.

I don't blame you, mind, you're just following the lead set by both political parties, who are more keen to muckrake than engage in policy debate. Which comes from a scarcity of politicians on either side able to communicate any kind of meaningful vision for the future of the country.

So instead we get piffle like "Gillard is former lawyer, childless, and in a defacto relationship with a male hairdresser... she has had 2 affairs with married men causing them to leave their wives and children"... I mean seriously who gives gak? Howard could have fethed every staffer in his office, male and female, but the GST remained excellent policy.

Nah, there's worthwhile political debates. Just not in Australia right now, where the choices are between an incompetent government who've more or less implemented their policy goals, albeit in a pretty compromised manner, and an opposition that decided when they dropped Turnbull in favour of Abbott that they'd much rather hate the government as intensely as possible than form any kind of coherent alternate vision for the country.

This has left us in a fairly poopy place, politically speaking, but fortunately like all things this too will pass.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I still can't believe they named a pool after him. It's like having a JFK Memorial rifle range.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

JFK has a rifle range named after him? I'd say thats a little insensitive, BUT we did name a pool after a guy the drowned. So......

Maybe Victoria's Secret could do a line of budgie smugglers called the "Abbot Range". That'd be a real money maker.
