I got told by some random guy who randomly walked in for a game that I dont play IG the right way, that my army is unfluffy and wouldnt shut up about it, and how young upstarts are ruining 40k.

From the bolded part, I guess he actually referred to the "old IG ways of army building". The pre-Cruddex times, when we had doctrines and such. Because then, going mech was 'bleh' and going foot was 'cool', so I think the guy technically complained about the codex and not you. Kinda' like: "I still field my all-foot platoons and old stuff, even though these new, shiny and totally unfluffy options turned the rookies to the dark side!".

If you could dig up the previous IG codex, then you could get a better picture .

Ahh, I may build more tanks and turn mine into having the option of being an armoured battlegroup.

I think some people just find the idea of an army full of tanks etc a bit "cheaty" - or at least that is the way it has been explained to me so maybe thats what his problem was.

Also, werent there originally only two Russ variants? Im sure I had an older codex copy somewhere that only listed the plain-jane Russ and the Demolisher. Now there seems to be a version with pretty much every single gun available to the IG (eight turreted versions and two turretless I think)

Actually the first 3rd Edition Codex had the Vanquisher, Exterminator, Demolisher, and Battle Tank variants. The late-3rd/4th/early-5th codex only had the Battle Tank and the Demolisher.

Armageddon Steel Legion among other regiments is almost fully mechanized. I almost think it is unfluffy for a "standard" (not Catachan, Vallhalla, etc.) guard regiment to not be mechanized. What I think that guy meant was that usually vehicles would only be reserved for veterans. Actually, that guy probably just didn't want to play against all those tanks!
