Well I just did inventory on my Eldar, and with upgrades it came out to over 4500 points. I still have several things I'd like to get though, including another fire prism, a wave serpent or two, Eldrad, and some jetbikes.

I'm the kind of person who likes to switch up my list every game, so it's nice to have options. That's why I have a hard time saying an army is ever "done". Maybe one day, when you finally have enough of each unit to fill up their respective FOC slots, then maybe my armies will be done, but until then I'll probably keep plodding away.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

I was horrified/in awe at backspacehacker's comment. lol...I thought he was listing what he bought until I got to the end.

Well backspacehacker's comment just proved that it IS possible to buy enough models to construct a full Space Marine Chapter. Not even close to realistic, but if you won the lottery or...something...and had time and ability to make ALL those models....sure...why not...

I don't.

I might stop buying for a while so I can catch up on painting, but an army is never 'done' for me. I'm a collector, I don't buy an army, I buy into a range. There's always going to be another Tyranid I want, another Vampire Counts unit that would be cool to field, another Haqqislam fig I can't wait to put the brush to.

Right now, I'm done with Tyranids. I've got nearly 2000pts, though not all painted. So now, I can field a few different army builds, so I'm concentrating on getting what I have painted. Sure, I have the next expansion planned (Tervigon and a bunch of Gaunts), but I'm not interested in buying them yet.

Meanwhile, my Vampire Counts and Haqqislam are on the rise. I've started painting my Vampires, and my Haqqislam are gradually getting done. I've got the VC megaforce coming at Christmas to give the army a massive shot in the arm (and get it ready for actually playing), and I've been getting my Haqqislam painted to 200pts to get some games going (mostly I'm waiting on friends to get their gak done).

To me, simply buying an army is a waste. You're missing out on building, painting and using so much of a range of models. I prefer to buy into a range, and continually add to it as you go, maybe even buying stuff that doesn't fit into your planned builds.

There is no such thing as "enough tanks". Even once you have enough squadrons of tanks to fill an entire FOC there's always superheavy tanks, squadrons of superheavy tanks, etc.

Now, enough infantry is very simple: CCS and 3x veteran squads (35 models total), enough for a 1500 point game. Why waste money on more when there are tanks to buy?

Because next edition will probably swing the pendulum back and veterans won't be the hot stuff anymore? And by then, there will be another price rise, so buying some more infantry now saves you buying them when the price goes up.

Necroshea wrote:Well, seeing as I run guard, the problem for me is in equipment. For all the models I have, I don't have15 melta gunners on hand to fill out 5 meltavets. Perhaps I should just make a goal to have 15 of every special weapon, seems like that would work out well enough for just about any list under 2k

So, in my case I do have like 15 meltaguns, and like 18 heavy weapons bases/loaders/gunners. That doesn't mean I have everything, though. I have only 3 plasma guns, 2 snipers, 4 grenade launchers, etc. The thing is, though, that I've never come across a point yet where I think "boy, I wish I had like 16 plasma guns", so I've never bothered to build many.

As such, it's not when I have everything in the codex, but when I have everything I'd want to field from my codex without extensive proxying.

I play DKoK. "Price increase" is not a concern.

Also, that's next edition. Buy infantry to prepare for next edition and hope I buy the right ones, or buy more tanks now? Not really a difficult question.

Yeah, plus, 5th ed was all about mech, and when 6th ed came out, it hardly swung the pendulum over towards foot, much less 6th being as foot as 5th was mech.

Next codex edition. I should have been clearer.

Always helps to be prepared. If a codex comes out and suddenly you're lumping 50+ infantry, particularly FW infantry, on top of the cost of the codex, it starts getting ridiculous. Spreading purchases out makes it easier.

I see this complaint all the time. 'GW killed my army, I'm selling it' when a new codex pushes the power builds in a different direction. If they had a more balanced collection with army builds being drawn from it, it becomes less of a hassle when your particular favorite build gets squashed on a codex edition change.
