Greetings all.
One problem that has been hounding me since I picked up my first battleforce ages ago is the same one that still assaults me to this day. When do you reach a stopping point with your army? I never intend to go higher than 2000 pts, but 2000 Pts can field many different variations. I always hear people have X amount of Y army, but this is always a strange idea to me. Do you always run the same lists? At what point do you stop collecting more stuff and move on to another army or just stop alltogether and only play?

Usually when someone says "I have X points of Y" They generally mean all the units they have combined.
I have 2,500 points of CSM, but I can runs different lists at smaller games, etc. This becomes easier when you have 3,000+ points of stuff. I'm sitting on 5,000 of WHFB Dwarves, so I can change up my list as I like,
As for when to stop, that's up to you. Some people collect 10,000 points of stuff, while some people build an 1850 tourney list or somesuch and then drop the army after that.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I build formations, companies/ squadrons etc, not really any point limitations.
Might be why I have 40K+ orks and 17k+ tau, no other reason then for my own modeling enjoyment.
When one becomes boring or limited I change to another, and alternate between building /scratchbuilding and terrain as well.
I build paint far far far more then I play anymore.

With Vanilla Space Marines it's really easy to find a stopping point, or a series of start and stop points. They are even set up in a way to fill the FoC so easily.
I have a full battle company and then I have additional units to swap in and out to adjust my list as needed. For example I have 2 Devastator squads, but I made extra heavy weapon marines. They are all painted up the same so they are interchangeable. And if LasCannons become feasible again I can use them, in the meantime Heavy Bolters and ML will continue to see play, and I have the plasma too but I'm not a fan of hurting myself.
Once I had my company I knew I could stop buying Space Marines. I could still get support stuff like techmarines and thunder-fire cannons and a few vehicles but those aren't necessary to the lists I make at present. But this gives me enough flexablity to adjust my lists, as well as be able to play in both small and large games.
With my 'Nids it was a lot more difficult to determine when I could stop buying models because you can run so many gribbles and a few MC and gribbles are really cheap to field so you can run bunches of them.

I have a 1500-1750 point Daemons army for competitive games or tournaments. Will probably never add to it.
I also have a Necron army that I just keep adding too because I love the models.
I also had about 5000 points worth of CSM that I'm half way through selling to fund some more Necrons or a Fantasy army.

Well I have a addiction. I have around 4500 points of orks, and that number will keep growing.
My logic is thus: There are so many different lists and combinations of units I can use in this army, and I hate running the same list over and over again, so I get the proper combination of models so that I can play any list. And Then I realize I like a certain list, so I buy more of those models so I can play it at bigger games.
Then I realize that I need more if I want my Apoc army to be badass. Around 10k, I will probably stop.

So, I only buy stuff that I want to field. Eventually, I get to this point where when I want to field something, I already have the models for it. As such, stopping for me is rather organic.
And, of course, stopping doesn't usually mean dead stopping. I'll still want to try something new now and again which will require me to make more stuff, but the days of mass-producing my army are behind me now.

Well, seeing as I run guard, the problem for me is in equipment. For all the models I have, I don't have15 melta gunners on hand to fill out 5 meltavets. Perhaps I should just make a goal to have 15 of every special weapon, seems like that would work out well enough for just about any list under 2k

I'm currently sitting on about 2800 in C:SMs but I still want more because I don't have all the units I want to field. I still want a Land Raider, two Stormtalons, a couple more Land Speeders, 2 thunderfire cannons, and a Storm Eagle.
I've reached my limit on most infantry types, but I do have a couple of spots to fill, such as another 5 veterans to use as either HG or Vanguard, and 2 more Sternguard. I also wouldn't mind having a terminator Chaplain.

Speaking only for myself, I'm not sure enough is ever really enough. I started my Ultramarines army back in 99 and still add something new to it every now and then even though they haven't seen action since 2008. I did Tyranids in 2004, played with them twice, never got around to selling them or expanding as I got bored, but recently came back added a couple tervigons, trygons, warriors and a winged tyrant. I also re-painted and re-based the entire force. I think that the only way to call it quits is if I ever quit the hobby altogether (unlikely after almost two decades, but you never know).

I actually don't really play the game itself. I mean I've done it 4 times since I started back in 2003 lol. I just like to paint, convert, make dioramas and add up the total points of my armies.

My CSM army is apocalypse sized and there are too many variations to really talk about points. I can run lists under any of the 4 gods up to around 3000 points, and have models for every unit except for the new fiends.
I don't think the question is easy to answer, some people collect miniatures to play the game and some collect them to paint. I am more of the later, although I play the game more often now than I once did.
I don't think I am ever going to hit the point of enough, I enjoy painting miniatures and find I don't have much interest except for my first army. It simply grows, and I sell models occasionally when I feel like I am not going to do anything with them. It's like a garden.

WHAT HERESY IS THAT??!!??
My Army continues to grow (i've lost track of the points value of my army). The main reason is I just find it fun to build and construct units. Playing them in games is kinda secondary.
BUt still from the view of an IG player.
Theres no such thing as "Enough Tanks". "Enough Tanks" is heresey!!

For me, enough became enough last year.
I finished my GK army.
I finished my eldar army.
My SM have been finished for 10 years.
I gave up on my guard army - a work in progress since 2nd ed.
No other armies appeal to me, the game no longer appeals to me.

Most of the time I run 1500-1850 pt games. That said 3,000 pts of an army usually allows me to run what I want at any given time from codex.
Currently converting Nob Bikers from Deffkoptas
I had the urge to play Bikers, so adding that onto the Orks.

Hah, I like this topic. With my main army, Tyranids, I have upwards of 6k...not that much compared to some of the others mentioned in this topic...(I'd love to see 40k of orks on the table!) I have several armies that I'd like to get up to about 2k, so that I can have options of playing them in tourneys and whatnot. Though I also have Imperial Guard that i'm having a ton of fun with. So that army is likely to increase exponentially. So I guess what i'm trying to say...there is no enough? lol

Recently I've gotten into the habit of buying about 500 points worth of models for an army, painting 100 points of it, and then deciding I'm not interested in the army anymore. It is a terrible waste of money, and I should be ashamed.

My stopping point is the amount of space in my carry cases and the space for carrying cases in my trunk.
Furthermore all of my armies play differently, so I try not to double up. No bikes for my CSM, that's my iron hands, not vehicles when I can, thats what my tau do, ect ect.

My stopping point just happened actually.
For me it came down to being able to field all the different themed armies that I wanted.
I can field Ork armies of 2k of the following types.
Green Tide
Dredbash
Battle Wagon Rush
Nob Bikers
Speed Freeks
All in all, that's about 3500 pts of models.

The stopping point is when you lose your house because you can't afford to pay for it anymore.
In seriousness? I think I stopped once I had enough units to make a really strong army, plus the extras to experiment. I'm both happy and sad with the allies rules, because it's a complete justification for me buying a handful of units here and there (I actually have about 1500 points of Blood Angels now that I bought solely to complement my Space Wolves) to add to my core army...but unfortunately, it's also a justification for me to say "I'm playing every army now!"

You're missing the Reclusiam and the Librarium (separate organizations outside the command section) that tend to have more than ten members each, and you're missing the Apothecarium (another twenty models or so), and the Honor Guard (a separate organization of sixty or seventy veterans from which Force Commanders and Command Squads are drawn)...
More realistically, I see no reason to continue expanding an army once you've got enough units to build a variety of workable forces at any points level up to 2,500; my Eldar army has 4,000pts of units in total, and I can make a few different builds for smaller games out of it. It hasn't been updated for 6e, unfortunately, under the 5e rules it was 'done'.
