It's been a while since I read about the war in heaven (and admittedly, the version I read is probably no longer the "current" version), but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't it implied somewhere that the War in Heaven was largely responsible for humans being able to thrive now that the "old ones" etc., were too beat up to still be on top of the galactic food chain? If that's still the case then the War in Heaven is by FAR the more impactful of the two.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Psiensis on the "good old days":
"Kids these days...
... I invented the 6th Ed meta back in 3rd ed.
Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Let's see, Results from the War in Heaven:
-Screwed up the Warp enough to result in the birth of chaos (not the awakening of the chaos gods though mind you)
-Brought into the setting such races as the Eldar and the ork in a more indirect manner (assuming the orks are descendants of the Krork)
-Indirectly allowed the Eldar to claim the galaxy, fall into decadence, and birth and awaken Slaanesh while annihilating a vast majority of their species
- Implanted the fear of death (in the form of the Nightbringer, this hasn't been retconned so I'm holding it to still be true) in almost every species
- Brought the C'tan into physical form which in turn allowed the Big E to subdue a Void Dragon shard which the AdMech may or may not worship as the Machine God
-Landed a shard of the Outsider in the Dyson Sphere - assuming here of course - resulting in the Nids taking a big ol' detour before beginning their nom nomming of the galaxy
-Humanity was allowed to grow on their own without tamperings from the Old Ones and minimal interference from the C'tan (implanted fear of death plus our design for how the reaper looks like implies a shard of the Nightbringer showed up at some point, and of course, the Void Dragon shard that sought refuge on Earth)
- Pylons on Cadia, initially designed to cut off the Warp, now sorta contain the expanse of the EoT as well as providing a stable entry/exit point into and out of the EoT
- Pariah gene (?) not sure if this is meant to be a natural genetic occurrence among human species or remains as genetic tampering by C'tan/Crons...

Results from the Great Crusade and the Heresy:
-Man now assumes dominant role in galaxy with galaxy spanning empire
-Loss of two capable leaders (Malcador and The Big E) with no one having the cojones to step up and properly guide the Imperium results in a government riddled with corruption and stagnation. Implies a slow but certain Rome-like death for the Imperium.
-Feeding chaos, feeding chaos, feeding chaos with emotions of all and direct worship by heretics... as man has done in the past.
-Xenophobic tendencies puts mankind at odds against every other freaking species in the galaxy which only adds to the slow painful Rome-like death the Imperium seems to be facing
-...

Gonna go with The War in Heaven on this one.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

"And what if I told you the Wolves tried to bring a Legion to heel once before? What if that Legion sent Russ and his dogs running, too ashamed to write down their defeat in Imperial archives?" - ADB
