A deathstar that work great for me (though you won't want to be running it in less than 2k games) is the following:

Overlord (195): Warscythe, Sempiternal Weave, MSS, Phase Shifter, Tessuract Labryinth
Zhandrekh (185)
Obyron (160)
5 Lychguard (225): HPS & DS
2 Storm Crypteks (70): Lightning Fields

I think there is a glaring couple of weakness with this Deathstar group:
1. Only 2 Warscythes, ARGH! Warscythes are SO killy. They make the Deathstar killy. You only have 6 base attacks with the Warscythe here. An unbuffed squad of TH/SS Termis have 10 TH strikes base.
2. You only have one Mindshackle Scarab. I think the other way to make a deathstar this expensive more killy is to abuse the best piece of CC wargear in the game.

How can we fix this without running a Royal Court squad? I like using an Overlord and Obyron like you do, but I leave Zahndrekh out of the squad. Secondly, I add in two MSS/Scythe weilding Lords instead of the Crypteks. Sure, anti-tank is great, but in this case, I think making you deadlier in combat is needed. That ups the Warscythe attacks from 6 to 10, and gives you 2 more mindshackles. If you aren't keen on teleporting, drop Obyron, get another generic overlord for the warscythe, MSS, Laby and Orb. If you load all up into a Night Scythe as suggested, you now have two indepenent characters that can split off and engage targets after you drop near the enemy if needed. You probably don't need a reminder, but a tooled up Overlord can handle most units in the game.
Just some thoughts.

Yah TH/SS don't stand a chance against this unit.... I know as its COMPLETELY decimated a unit consisting of Vulkan and 10 TH/SS termies on multiple occasion. This unit is one of the few things I'm scared to throw my hammernators at.

The thing is it costs so much. You want to attack with 2 units, which probably still cost less. The first one can be a tactical squad or scouts and fixes most of the damage on them and takes the MSS. The second unit attacks all clustered around 1-2 guys on one end.

The problem with that, which I feel is why this unit is scary good. Is you dont get to dictate where/how this combat takes place. The SECOND you get the upper hand it's gone thanks to the ghostwalk.

Also, a small RAW loophole is that if Zahndy is in the squad, there is no scatter, as he is aiming to arrive within 6" of him.

RAI, I know its illegal. but RAW it works

not that I'd ever pull it...

dont you place the first model, then scatter, then place additional models. That is how you did it in 5th.

Trouble with a unit like that is you ca't consolidate into combat, nor can you assault out of a Deep Strike. That means as soon as this unit either shows up or finishes off an opposing unit, it's going to have a high-strength pie plate dropped onto it or else a lot of anti-tank firepower directed its way, as this unit requires sinking so many points into it that it's absolutely worth pumping everything your army has into destroying it.

Indeed you do, forgot about that...

Drop Oby in a second unit of 10 Guard, then drop them in as well.

Another great part of the unit is the Dispersion shields which can reflect oh so many of those nasty shots and can always teleport away if needed.

the unit is stupid good and yes a royal court is better in cc, but it is the only it can do with dispersion shields and stormteks the unit will threathen anything witin the 12".

Made a small 1500 list to run it in:

1 Necron Overlord w/ 2+, Shackles, Scythe, Shifter, Tesseract
Harbringer of the Storm w/ Lightning Field
1 Nemesor Zhandrekh
Harbringer of the Storm w/ Lightning Field
1 Varguard Obyron

5 Lychguards w/ Hyperphase Swords & Dispersion Shields

5 Necron Warriors w/ Nightscythe
5 Necron Warriors w/ Nightscythe
5 Necron Warriors

1 Annihilation Barge
1 Annihilation Barge
1 Annihilation Barge

that is 1500 to the chin, gues your opponent will be very busy...

From a purely Look Out Sir point of view, which does the group think is better. 5 Lychguard with Warscythes or 5 with Swords and Shields? I want to run 5 purely as an escort for 2 Overlords and 2 Lords and have been debating which is better. Also if you had the option would you build 5 of each, just to have the option or build 10 with one option or the other?

With RP, it's almost always better to go bigger squad size, to lessen the chance of losing the entire unit to some lucky shooting and not having anyone left over to let them get back up.

... that being said, a unit of 5 Sword & Shield LG walking in front of/screening 10 Warscythe LG may have merit. (if you have 600 points to waste, that is)
