I think we can do without people accusing each other of being Nazis and the drug talk please folks.

Thanks.

Alas, to the OP; why not try one of the fantastic 40k Roleplaying Games? I suspect that, since you already have some experience as a DM, that could greatly help you immerse yourself back into the 40k universe?

Speaking from exactly the same experience and background and enjoying a beer or two, I have friends who play extremely competitively and yes it gets very unfunny and dull sometimes but when you beat them it's awesome but yes to much of this isn't fun. So my solution was get down the local gaming store find some like minded individuals and mix between the groups. My best friend plays but he has no idea what he's doing but we have a few beers enjoy ourselves. Friend who lives round the corner likes his cheese list for example the Farseer archon shadow seer Death Star but when I beat him god I don't stop rubbing his nose in it.

LOL, come back to check this and I've become a Nazi? WTF mate?

A "D campaign" is a D&D campaign. I'm just going to stick to the fantasy world, i wouldn't mind 40k Fantasy oh yeah thats right. As bad as 40k prices are.....fantasy is that much worse. I'll just stick to my cheesy d&d models.

Hrm. Looks like I forgot my main gripe. Not being able to play a fluffy list that I'd really like, because there's just not a snowball's chance in hell to actually do anything but lose horribly with one what with the 6th edition changes and the local meta.

A good thing to do to cheer you up when the spleen look over your shoulders is to do crazy, odd tactics. You will find fun to do some unexpected moves or tactics and just look the face of your opponent.... priceless....

I know how you feel

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

Take a break from the hobby for awhile.

I don't think I've ever had a hobby which I enjoyed always 24/7 for years on end, and 40k is not an exception.

I understand what ya feel bro, but then, just ask to play a friendly game, in my hobby sphere we always ask beforehand, tourney training or fun game? always.

I play necrons as well but every decent old school necron player (those who used 3d edition till the very update! of which i'm one) must now also realise that necrons can be fun and not that good at all (try playing old school destroyer lists, mhihihi it's so funny, mono's! OOOH the laughter when you deep strike 2 of those!)

Just get your planning of the battle straight, then you'll always have fun!

as for painting, I got so my painting urges, that's normal I guess!

I haven't been playing 40k long enough to get sick of it, but I've gotten sick of MtG because my casual games started becoming more competitive (while I remained casual) and I started losing... FAST. I'm okay to lose if it feels like a good give and take, but if I'm just slaughtered, it's no fun.

Also, I got sick of D&D/Pathfinder when our group couldn't think of anything NEW, in terms of character and story. So, we switched games to World of Darkness.

In regards to the OP, I agree with taking a break for a while. Play something else, the 40k bug will eventually kick in again and if not, its just a game.

Back on topic:

I am pretty much in the same boat still, I just broke out some green stuff and learning how to sculpt and that is a skill that will transfer over to any mini hobby. It didn't so much get me excited about 40k again so much as it makes me want to play D&D where I can model things to whatever and there are balanced rules to compensate instead of my old power maul inquisitor having to be played as holding a power sword now in 6th.

I stopped having fun with 40k after trying out some other tabletop games. Once I realized that with some other game systems it's possible to get through a game without a rules dispute, there was no going back for me. I still love the models and fall into the trap of wanting to collect new armies every once in a while, but I pretty much only play when a particular friend asks at this point because I know he still prefers 40k.

This hit me pretty hard. I hate to admit it, but I agree. I loved 40k when it seemed balanced, but with the constant faqs and blatant GK hatred I have questioned over and over again if it is just a matter of people being upset because few people like me take collecting an army seriously so you don't have to consider arguements like list tailoring and OP units seriously, but the fact that those arguements exist and are constant that makes me prefer games like Arkham Horror and Twilight Imperium when I'm with my friends and we want to have fun.

Eh... there have always been disputes over rules, accusations that one army is *so much bettar!!!11!!* than others. Looking back in history tends to paint the past with nostalgia, rather than reality.

Basically, 40K of 20 years ago is not that much different from 40K of today, not where the back-and-forth between fans and such is concerned.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

We were starting to get a bit run down with playing. The solution ended up being Crusade of Fire.

It's not even that book, but rather the idea of a campaign system where the game takes on another dimension that was the important bit.

If that doesn't appeal to you, then I'd say take a break and go do something else.

Why didn't you have fun? Sitting waiting at my local gaming club waiting for 1-2 hours for everyone else to show up. And wveryone plays in little group's. To many rules lawyers rinnwaround.

Bad opponent? I only get to play like 2-3 different people a once a week so it gets dry.

Overplaying your army? Starting to get there.

Facing the same armies over and over? Power armour power armour.... blah

Playing the same missions over and over? Most people set up for missions but it devolves to kill everything.

Winning too much? I win more then i lose.

Losing too much? Only to 1 kid that goes cause he is special.

Yah so I am getting sick of 40k to and some games take way way to long.

I had that problem for a bit, more related to the fact that I was playing with strangers. Once I got a tight knit group of players and some family members to play it became enjoyable again. That and drinking like 4 cases of beer while watching some football and playing some WH is always fun. The more the merrier
