ok guys. played a game on saturday, didn't really have fun. just felt like i was going through the motions. taking a break. i've not even painted 40k stuff in a while, don't find it enjoyable. been painting D&D guys.

have that feeling occasionally?

Why didn't you have fun?

Bad opponent?

Overplaying your army?

Facing the same armies over and over?

Playing the same missions over and over?

Winning too much?

Losing too much?

we play in a casual environment. and its losing the casual feel. i bought a storm raven and played it, wish i hadn't now. the guy built an army to purposefully beat me.

a tourney list so to speak. i don't really care for that. I just want to smoke some green and hang out with my friends.

I get that feeling anytime anyone has ever said, "I play Necrons"

gqmes get boring when people cheat or directly make a list to beat you. they are clearly just looking for the title, and i try to avoid playing these types of people as much as possible.

just remember that winning isn't everything. I live in Qatar and every so ofen i go back to Dubai to play at the club there cos there isn't one here. I played orks, played three games, lost all of them but had a huge grin on my face after. THAT is the 40k spirit.

For me the feeling comes from a few things currently.

Firstly having spent too much money. Now, obviously I would've spent it on one thing or the other anyway, but it's still been a bit too much. Luckily it should settle down now, as barring new releases I have basically the things I need and then some.

Secondly not getting to play enough games, so the spending part stings more than it would if I got to play regularly.

Thirdly when I do get to play, it's generally a defeat or at most a tie. Which gets quite old after a while.

Fourthly not having enough time or energy to build and paint my forces. Only a small fraction of my forces is even basecoated. Only one non-BT model is painted, that being a single Ork Nob. And that with having 2000+ points of chaos and 2000+ points of orks, and probably around 9001 points of unpainted marine stuff, both BT and C:SM.

Your local meta is changing towards a more competitive environment. That's not the games fault.

Stick it out. Either it's a phase and your group will go back to playing casually, or they won't and you'll know if you want to keep playing with them.

Or give something else a try. See if theres groups around that play other games.

Sometimes people just get burned out, as well. It happened to me several years ago. I had just attended my second GT (and had a poor showing), and had begun to play competitively - participating in local tournaments and RTT's when I could. I also spent many Saturday's at the FLGS where I talked and played 40k all day long. Then 4th edition was released and as I was on the verge of picking up the new rulebook (literally had it in my hands), when I just felt burned out and completely exhausted of anything and everything wargaming, not just 40k. I did a little soul searching and decided to get out of the game completely. I sold everything I had, including a very large collection of very old White Dwarf magazines (I still kick myself for that) and walked away.

I tried, unsuccessfully, to get back in the game twice a few years later but that burned out feeling haunted me and I wound up stopping before I ever got started. It took a long time (7-9 years?) for me to finally want to pick up the dice and plunge back into the game.

Burn-out is pretty common for all hobbies. Get away from the game for a while and do something you do enjoy. You might come back to 40k feeling refreshed and reinvigorated, or you may just decide to walk away forever because you've outgrown it. One piece of advice, don't sell everything!

I would suggest switching to something new relating to the hobby. I got burnt out awhile ago painting endless read BA ASMs to a point I can't bear to dip my brush with red. took a break to paint some other models like painting the DV starter box. I'll admint after awhile I'm starting to want to complete my BA again

if he tailors his lists, surprise him with something next time...I used to do that to a friend of mine who was HORRIBLE about making cheesy lists

Tourney lists are far different from tailored lists. What you're describing, a list written specifically to beat yours and yours alone; that's not a tourney list. That's a tailored list, and that's just short of cheating.

If your gaming group is all shifting toward more competitive lists, you simply should follow suit to the best of your ability. You can still have casual, fun games. Those games will just be with better lists.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think for now I'm just going to focus on being Dungeon Master and give 40k a break. I think I'll just watch my buds play, and offer rulings if they ask.

I feel the exact same way. I am planning to hold out until i can arrange an apoc game or a maybe a little campaign. Too many people take their 40k way to seriously and it makes it suck for those of us who are just trying to play with some models and dice. Have you tried out any of the 40k rpgs at all? those look fun.

agreed on the burned out feeling.

i got back in 6 months before they released 6th Ed. Sometimes you just need to step away which i did. I was able to focus more on my paintball team and get things going with that. Good thing is 3 of the members in my gaming club are also on the team.

Nothing like yelling a WAAAGH during a final battle at a paintball scenario and you hear others follow suit

We play D&D, I just can't sink my teeth into the 40k stuff. I like the game, not the stories, but i do love Mephiston.

Sounds like a problem with the friends and not a problem with the game.
Next time, make sure they smoke a lot more green before playing. They should be less competitive that that point.

I created my account just so I could respond to this, as I wen through this a few years ago. I took a break to see weather I was sick of the hobby, or wargaming in general... My friends and I picked up this cheap little game (pirates of the spanish main) and played that for 6 months or so. When we came back to 40k it felt fresh and new. Dont be afraid to walk away for a while :-)

Fill me in, What is D campaign? We are looking for some new uses for the 300+ ships we own lol.

I mean it though, my whole group took a break for 5-6 months and when we came back we hit it with a passion. Felt great.

Correction: If you don't live in a state with progressive laws it is time to get more active in voting or move to a civilized state. Laws are ideas we can always agree were a stupid mistake and change them accordingly, like a new edition of 40k that that brings back 6" assault phase.

Seriously though, I know the feeling g0atsticks. One by one my game group has entered the "doesn't want to play anymore slump" and then I lost my desire to have anything to do with the game when I saw what could be a new car sitting in my shed not getting used. I've tried to get everyone excited about ti via a new campaign or maybe the RPG, but sometimes it is just good to break from this game when things have just gotten too heated for a while. This game tends to tie one up more emotionally than any other (I'd say more so than WoW did as this games has a much steeper price tag and hurts that much more when you feel you aren't getting your proper $/hr enjoyment/effectiveness ratio). Part of the thing is having new players to play with, it is always a good idea to recruit some level headed people to join the group since GW won't install a smoking lounge at their Kent facility. I have thought of opening a B&B/"Dispensery" that caters to 40k players just like you and me (Like the Madonna INN only every room is different army themed with custom tables and tournaments every quarter); still working out the legalieaze/logistics/surveying the market.

I just took a week or so off from even coming here and looking at anything or going to a GW or even looking at my models and played some other games, and eventually I felt like working on some models again but currently I'm too much into the new Fire Emblem. Sometimes dreaming up a new conversion helps get you back into your army or making a table for them (I'll soon start working on a new table for my Nids [All water effects and scattered remains from my bit box, can you imagine the Ocean of Blood themed table?] for that very reason) if that's it. Part of why I am always looking to add new people to the group is that it does get old when you play against the same lists over and over again which is why I try to always keep it fresh and never bring the same list twice and encourage as much Apoc/team battles as possible.

Also, if you haven't checked them out yet, some of the 40k audio books are actually some of the best Audio Dramas to ever come out of any production studio (Seriously, Chosen of Khorne just might be the best short story audio book ever) and the Garro series has me eagerly awaiting every release. They're good for getting stoked about the fluff of the game which is a big part of my enjoyment of the game and worth checking out.

I think this is your biggest problem. In order to do it right, everybody needs to be playing at the same level, and/or have the same goal in mind.

If you just want to hang out, and your friends have other things in mind, it's going to create conflict. If you want to ply some sort of professional ethic to the game and your friends don't, that will create conflict.

Probably the best thing you can do is to sit down and have a chat with your friends, and see what they ACTUALLY want from the game. If you can get everyone on to the same page, that will be better for everyone.

Taking a break and playing something else is what I do when I get tired of a game.

Fortunately our group plays so many games, including RPGs and Board Games that most games are kept fresh. And playing RPGs is a great way to have a change. Keep it fun.

Yeah, I got burnt out, it lost the 'fun' tried a few other games, enjoy them even more than 40K now,

After getting stale with 40K, I put more energy into the prep work for the games - coming up with scenarios, ideas and different stuff to add interest to the actual playing on the table. Sounding out the ideas with who I'm going to be playing and getting them into the ideas behind the scenario so that they can choose a force accordingly (sometimes ignoring points values altogether)

I've gotten this a few times before. One time I just stopped playing for a few months and focused on my other main hobby (guitar) then was back in full-swing for 40k a few months later. The other time, I switched to Magic for a month before I got right back into 40k. The most recent time, I played Warmachine for a day before going back to 40k In other words, take a break, find something else and do that for a while. You may or may not come back to 40k in a few months time.

Step back find something that interests you more go for it. if you miss the game you will return. I did after a decade long absence.

I stopped having fun with 40k after trying out some other tabletop games. Once I realized that with some other game systems it's possible to get through a game without a rules dispute, there was no going back for me. I still love the models and fall into the trap of wanting to collect new armies every once in a while, but I pretty much only play when a particular friend asks at this point because I know he still prefers 40k.
