The last straw for me was Space Marine. I preordered, and I'm pretty damn sure they said that was going to be the only way to get a power sword. Well a couple months down the road, it comes out as DLC.
It might seem silly, but I'm taking a risk preordering a game that might be crap. I want to be rewarded for taking that risk in a way that I can't replicate at a later date.
Yeah, Space Marine annoyed me with its pre-order.
Pay £42 on the day of release for the game, plus Emperor's Children, Iron Warriors, Space Wolves and Black Templars skins in a fancy box.
Come back the next week (8 days later) to see the exact same game I bought for £42, including all the extra skins and fancy box, for £25.
I was not impressed.

Colonial Marines has utterly cured me of pre-ordering video games ever again. Not even Bioshock:Infinite, yo.
There is no question in my mind that within less then a month, you will be able to get Colonial Marines for $20 or less, and $5 within 2 months.

I hate it when lots of people pre-order a popular game (lets say black ops 2) and you have a line of 200 people waiting outside the door and you have to stand in that...just to trade in a game....you also have people waiting outside the door offering money for the game and also what is your clastriphobic? (tell me if i spelt that wrong)

Claustrophobia is the fear of small enclosed spaces, anthropophobia is the fear of large groups of people. Though then you'd probably buy it online and have it delivered.

Wait, who does that in 2013? If you have Amazon Prime, they'll ship games to you overnight and they arrive the morning it's released, unless it was a digital\Steam based product, in which case they just email you a key a few days before release.

I've preordered two games. Bulletstorm, and BF3.
Bulletstorm I preordered because it sounded awesome and I was really looking forward to trying it. As part of it's incentive, you got an early entry to the gears of war 3 demo (could care less) and a free preorder for Gears of war 3 (basically 5 bucks down for free). I walked into gamestop, said "hey, I hate gears of war, any chance I can preorder something else?" After the shocked stares abated I managed to convince them to let me preorder BF3, since they were trying to push it on me anyways. Bulletstorm was awesome and I had a ton of fun with it, but it was not worth the full 60 I paid for it. Shame, such a cool idea for a game.
As for BF3, I only went through with the preorder because it gave me 5 bucks off, and I've always been a big Battlefield fan. Got my preorder bonuses, only for my xbox to spaz out and lose them. Couldn't get them back either, so I essentially preordered for nothing (thankfully my back to karkand code worked).
After all the crap I went through with those two preorders, I swore them off. Gamestop tries to push them on me everytime I go in, but I always resist. Last time I was in the manager spent 10 minutes trying to talk me into the new Aliens game. I kept telling him "no, I'm going to wait for the reviews."
"But it'll be sold out by then! If you preorder, you can have it that day!"
"The games are always back in stock within a week, even for the big AAA titles out here, I think I can wait."
Boy did I dodge a bullet on that one.

Seeing how huge hype is around Destiny and the fact that it's already on pre-order I can bet all my miniatures that it will be a huge sell before the release.

I do it on safe games.
Even if it is a flop, you'll know early enough to turn it into gamestop and get $25-30 in credit for it, pretty much just being out the price if you had waited half a year to buy it.
Right now I've got Starcraft and GTA V on preorder.

That biscuit fellow really goes off the deep end with his bit about how people who like games that the gaming press generally finds poor are betraying their fellow consumers. Or ... maybe the "gaming press" (I use the phrase with contempt) doesn't have the final word on what people like? I am one of those people who would have bought Colonial Marines anyway. I don't pretend that it's an awesome game ... or even a good game. But as fan of the xenomorph/predator franchise and especially of the movie Aliens, I am enjoying the game. I'm not going to tell anyone else that they should spend $60 on it -- and just because some guy like this has a blog or a YT channel or works for one of those miserable catalogs that have the gall to call themselves game magazines he gets to tell me that not only should I not have spent my money on something that I rationally decided to spend it on but also that my decision was actually irrational and that I am, at least in a small way, responsible for declining quality in video games (a phenomenon, by the way, I don't think actually even exists). I give him credit for his argument that pre-orders generally aren't actually justified in terms of value to the customer, at least not often, and for his connection between pre-orders, DLC, and review emargos. I do think that his point about review embargos is not really as noble and upstanding as he says (after all, despite his weak argument to the contrary, no one in his part of the industry actually benefits from them) but that self-righteousness is nothing compared to the last 6 or so minutes of the video. Basically, pre-ordering or not pre-ordering a game is not a moral issue and I ultimately don't agree that quality of gaming generally turns on this issue. If anything the best takeaway from the vid, even though the biscuit guy never makes this is explicit point, is that pre-orders are a big part of the project to drive gaming profits without fiddling with launch prices.

I pre ordered one game and it was a mistake. The dev practically lied about the game and what I was expecting wasn't what I got. In a just world, they would have given me a full refund.

I tend to only preorder if
A) it's something I like
B) Cool swag (NVG for example, or the mechwarrior)
c) I know the publisher and series ain't going to be bad.

It really depends on the game series/company whether I pre-order.
So far I can recall a few games I have pre-ordered:
COD: Modern Warfare 3
Fable 2(Collectors Edition)
Final Fantasy 13(Collectors Edition)
Skyrim
Of those 4 games only 2 games have been worth the pre-order. FF13 while with some nice extras the game wasn't itself worth the money I paid for it. Fable 2 has been the worst offender though, told I would get item X,Y and Z with the pre-order just to have it reduced to a card sleeve, bonus disc and some DLC.
Skyrim and MW3 were worth the pre-orders even though I quit playing MW3 after realising the multiplayer was really bad. I have easily made both Skyrim and MW3 worth the pre-order even without any extra stuff.

I'm probably the biggest gaming nerd I know irl and so yes, I pre-order everything and I buy most of my games new. I realise not everyone has that option but I make enough money as an adult that I feel like I can fully support the industry I love with my purchases. I will pick up the odd second hand game, if it's something old or something I've purchased previously and traded or given away. There are a couple of developers especially who will always get love from me: Bethesda, Bungie, THQ (RIP), most Ubisoft shooters, Rockstar and a few others. Edit: and I will generally go with the fully tricked out limited editions if they're not too pricey. My gaming room is not gonna fill itself with merch.

Personally I do not really preorder games, considering the fact I often do not have money and I want to see how it turns out. If I preorder from a series a like and turns out to be crap, I feel like I wasted money on it.

Preordering games is like preordering Codicies, not really my thing. If I want it on release day (I guess to grandstand online somewhere) I'll go to the shop on release day. A bunch of gimmicky plastic junk that'll end up getting thrown out in a year or two isn't going to sell me on it either. Also totalbiscuit is as much of a douchebag as all the others cashing in on the tired old 'Ooooh I'm British I'm so rude and cynical lol' bit.
