I've been back in the hobby for nearly a year now and decided on CMS before i knew a new codex was coming out so was pleasantly surprised that that a ton of new models have come out.

Not sure on points but have a couple of CSM squads raptors, talons, havocs, termis, DP, sorc, Abanddon and some rhino's and Pred. Still got some plans on expansion before i'm finished BUT with the option of having allies it seems alot more easier to start a new army and use them as allies.

I got the cron codex two weeks ago and maybe in a few months might pick up there starter set so it'll be about a year fro mrestarting to when i'll pick up a model fro ma different army, and as others have said it is always nice to start painting a different scheme.

Started my first army at about the same time I started my second, battle for macragge, amassed about 2 k of both marines and nids, got the assault on black reach starter kits, which started my orks, for which I recently bought a stompa, and ten boyz, and started dark eldar about 6 months before 5th ed hit, I have nearly 4k of dark eldar, about to have 1.2 k of works, and 2k of both nids and marines, I also have a small allied detachment of eldsr, about 600 points worth.

Great responses! I'm still amassing my SW, and initially thought Nurgle CSM would be next as I love the modeling possibilities and fluff.

However, I'm also wanting a change from PA, so I think I'm pretty well settled on Tyranids. I think they provide some truly interesting mechanics, and have a play style that varies enough from my SW. I plan on waiting at least until I hit 2k with my SW and get comfortable with them. That'll give me time to get to know Tyranids and figure out what route to take.

For those that jumped right in to secondary and tertiary armies, did you do a lot of research first, or just learn as you went? Which do you think is the better approach and why?

With Chaos, Tzeench would probably turn your hands, feet and face into
scrotums, complete with appropriate nerve endings. Then Khorne would
force you and all your friends to fight to the death using your new
scrotal appendages. Once they get tired of that, you get tossed to
Slaanesh who <censored by order of the Inquisition>, until you finally
end up in Nurgle's clutches and he uses you as a loofah.

How many of you have purchased an allied detachment, with the intent of it being that, and had it turn into its own army? I don't see it going any different way personally.

I've never actually used allies.

Not in 2nd when it was the done thing, and since I don't play 6th ed, not now. I never even used allies in apocalypse games.

The army fights or dies on its own merits. Crutches are for other people.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I started with IG and had collected almost a thousand points when I saw the new Space Wolf models and went into a state of ADD.... Collected over a thousand points of them before moving back to IG and bringing both the Space Wolves and Guard up to 1500 pts each. Now I'm looking at Eldar, as a third army, just starting. I'd prefer to have a playable 1500 pt army before moving onto a new one.

I started off with a Rogue Trader warband back in RT days, it included Blood Angels (long before they had rules) and IG.
That morphed into a Blood Angels army for 2nd ed.
When 3rd ed came around, I quickly lost interest in BA as they were somewhat of an "autowin" button, and went back to IG, with the Deathworld Codex.
After the that, came Tau, then Necrons, Back to IG, this time Cadians, painted up as the Necromundan IX.
Then in 4th I did a Crimson Fist force, which lasted until the end of 4th ed when I built up an Ork force to compliment the CF (I have around 3 full companies of CF)
I've gone back to my Necrons at the moment.

Other side projects include, Witchhunters, Grey Knights, a DE witch cult,

I still haven't....

I would love to pick up my first army again (Tau) since I did such a bad job at painting them and gluing them together since I was probably close to 13 or 12 at the time.

Right now though, I have the Dark Vengance (sp?) box set and a few Orks and thats just because I like painting them.

Really though, the costs are putting me off a bit, I can get £6 boxes of 4 Orks now and again and that's why I like them.

I even checked the prices for the Tau just now... I've even got their codex.

I'm thinking about Imperial Guard though, they look fun and you can buy them in small amounts. Takes me ages to build all the models, I did my four Orks in four nights and even then that was because I was excited. Smaller boxes are easier for me.

This happened to me. I played IG since 3rd ed. Bought some space wolves as soon as 6th hit for allies and I fell in love with their play style. They feel like tougher IG that can actually win assaults. I also found that they were less tedious to paint than IG, so I got through them a hell of a lot faster.

Also, they ride on the backs of giant fething wolves.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Ive got about 2000-2500 of gk now, and am in the market to start my second army. It's 80% painted and big enough to play in any size game (except apocalypse but no-one plays that). Have experimented with allies, and its definitely a good way to start a second army, starting off with a troop and an hq.

After painting silver and marines for ages its time for a change, just can't decide if I should start another gw army, or start my pre heresy army, using the chaos codex.
