I'm trying to think of a little Kill-Team or 500 point army to create alongside my partner starting a small tyranid force.

He's a fan of Assaulty 'nids and flying creatures.

I was considering modelling a ramshackle Imperial guard force where they're forced to patch vehicles together and are reduced to smaller mechanised groups of veterans due to losses.

Alternatively, perhaps a melee astartes chapter, running low on supplies, ammunition and fuel, fighting tooth and nail against the bugs.

I'd love to hear what the Dakka community would think makes a super fluffy/cinematic opponent for Tyranids.

2nd Founding space marine/imperial guard stranded on a deathworld infested with tyranids who have been cut off from the hivemind/is a splinter fleet- renacting starship troopers.
a chaos ad mech scout finds what he is looking for, well rather what his master is looking for- Acidic Ichor from a lictor, it is said to be both a stimulant and a toxic poison which is highly sought after by the Emperors children/Noisemarines,
Imperial Arbites discover a monster in a growing shed on an agricultural world- 70's horror inspired
a group of explorators discover a tomb- inside they are not alone, inside they find only what could be a necron tomb, long since desserted but now has something else which calls it home.

there are others but i'll get back to you later date on it. (maybe)

Cinematically, Guard. Possibly Elysians.

I mean, Tyranids are designed to echo every alien swarm from a movie ever. Their inspirations are Aliens, Predators, Bugs (Starship Troopers)... all of whome are fought by hardarse soldiers with light armour and basic rifles in the movies (although Starship Troopers' original book had power armour that makes Marines look under-equipped).

the PA you refer to is what they designed later the SC terran marine/firebat armour from. (starcraft terran marine- they need to do a remake of Starship troopers and include power armour this time)

Chaplain Cassius, sternguard as tyranic war vets, some support elements. We really hate nids.

It's been a while since I read up on eldar, wasn't there a craftworld that got nommed pretty hard by the nids? Might be a fluffy option.

Iyanden, its the reason they use so many damn wraiths. They went somewhere, and ended up going into a giant clusterfeth involving a large war with nids inside the craftworld, space marines also got in there too. Then the Dark Eldar came along and laughed at them about being sad for forcing the entire thing into wraith units.

Chenkov with his endlessly respawning conscripts vs tervigons and the endlessly spawning gaunts! It's the game that never ends!

Serious answer: Infantry IG vs tyranids is definitely the most "cinematic" matchup you can get. Heck, one of my regular rivals plays Nids and whenever we play a game we make a point to field really crazy lists, usually nidzilla vs footguard. Every game tends to be crazy and memorable.

Things that make a cinematic (not necessarily good though) in no particular order

Commissars: Lord or regular, they make very charismatic leaders and a cool focal point to an army. All of mine have reputations for acts of insanity that would make a space marine green with envy.
Company command squads: Give the commander a power fist, and the squad a Master of Ordnance. You can also pull an ailaros and put an Administratum priest in with them with an eviscerator. Nothing beats watching a 60 year old man with a chainsaw sword as big as he is go on a rampage.
One tank: Make it battleworn, put a ton of kill markings on it, and ALWAYS put a commander in the turret with a sword. Makes a cool centerpiece unit.
Stormtroopers and Marbo also make awesome units for a cinematic game, as they're special forces designed to be in the thick of the action. Might be too expensive for killpoints though.

Like I said, these are choices rated for CINEMATIC awesomeness, not necessarily gameplay effectiveness (although nothing I listedawas too bad in and of itself) Just keep that in mind when you're writing up a list and don"t get too carried away.

That's a good idea. Assault is one of the most cinematic things about the game (if only it wasn't one of the weakest aspects of 6th)

The Blood angels are also backed up with some serious tyranid-wasting (thematically) firepower, such as Flamestorm(?) cannons and plenty of assault cannons.

I'm inspired. Maybe I can hang onto this idea for more than a week, lol!

Edit: I might even try to model the marines and their vehicles/equipment as severely battle-worn and damaged, make it look like they're absolutely on their last legs; Patched up plating and scratched armour.

If you like the idea of blood angels look up the Lamentors chapter. Basically the blood angels but actually cool.

Theyre currently on a hundred year chapter of repentance where theyre taking on an entire hive fleet with only 300 or so marines, and theyre not allowed to recoup losses unless they survive. Probably the coolest space marine chapter out there.

They're also infamous for having incredibly bad luck, and being a truly heroic chapter (as in taking on entire WAAAAGHS to save civilians, knowing they would suffer massive losses). I'll edit in some links to their fluff when I get home. They would fit what you want perfectly.

Thanks for the input;

I'm still considering the IG as well as a Blood Angels successor;

I've discounted the Tau as I've come to the conclusion that while I do like the designs, they're too clinical and clean for me.

I love the ramshackle vehicles and ability to convert ANYTHING of the Orks, but I'm not so fond of the 'Green Space-Chav' mentality of them.

I'm town by the IG however. I like the uniforms, but would like to make them look really gritty and worn down. Wounds, damaged equipment .etc but I worry about marring their aesthetic.

I suppose, however, I could go all out and make renegade guard; perhaps they turned to Nurgle in fear of the Tyranids. I could then use plastic cultists ;D

The thing about Tyranids is they make every fight pretty cinematic. A horde of bugs coming straight at you, wanting to rip your face off is pretty self explanatory to anybody watching.

Only thing that wouldn't make sense is Necrons, but really, Tyranids will fight everybody and anybody, and do it in gore-splashing style.

Awesome!

The one I thought of was this. If you're going for the "inevitable defeat" look, you may want to skip on the Warhound, though.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

I think the most cinematic or fluffy would be imperial guard, because it reminds me of the Colonial Marines fighting the Xenomorphs in Aliens. Theres also Starship Troopers, and a whole slew of other movies, comics, and games, when the simple futuristic soldier fights the bugs.
