IT WAS SO GODDAM CLOSE. If they hadn't hyped and struggled and such at Lionhead, and focused on making everything as polished as possible, I believe I would have played my favourite game of all time.
Also, Spore. If only it was as in depth as we hoped...
why fable? I actually really enjoyed it, it was a great game even till the end where you get an awesome boss battle
I only liked Fable 1 because I missed the run-up and hype to it. I bought it because I played it at a friend's house once and liked it for what it was because I didn't know it was lacking so much of what had been promised.
Reading about what Molyneux said would be in it, I still like it, but I also understand why people who followed it from the get-go with all the hype and promises feel the way they do.
Ahh... i came to fable pretty late too then. when i bought mine i bought The Lost Chapters which included the better ending. I did some research and realized the first Fable's ending was pretty weak.
I'm not a fan of where the Series went after the first. Fable's two and three are pretty terrible, I think if they would have kept the gameplay more like the first it would be better. the inclusion of guns and cutting down magic was a bad idea in my opinion.

Starfleet Command 3. Could have been an amazing game, if Taldren's efforts weren't crippled by Activision's mismanagement (same argument works for KOTOR2).
Max Payne 3, if Remedy had developed it. It was fun, but it lacked their magic touch.

I have to echo everyone who said KOTOR 2. It was really good and pretty dark, but the ending was just absolutely terrible. After all that, you just fly away in the Ebon Hawk... horrible.
I also have to put Uncharted up there. It could have been an awesome adventure game with a solid story, exploration, and some decent puzzles, but instead it was just a bland 3rd person shooter that bizzarely turns to a horror theme near the end. I tried playing 2 on 3 seperate occasions and could never get more than halfway through. I much prefered Gears of War for my 3rd person shooting action.

I agree that every other one after TLC has been balls, but I don't think they cut down magic; it was game-breakingly OP throughout the entire series. I didn't use it much in 2 because I got perhaps the best gun in the game (the one which fires really fast with a reload time of "boop the side of the gun and it's ready again") really early on, but in 3, it was nearly all I used; the combination of fire and lightning simply allowed by to stunlock everything and cause heavy damage at the same time, and by the time the stun had worn off I had already unleashed another charged fire-lightning AoE. I never even got close to being hurt, never mind dying.

I never really got into magic in TLC, which was the best.
I have a guilty pleasure to admit that I mildly enjoyed two. Not for the gameplay, god no, but my 9 year old mind was taken aback by the epic atmosphere, which is really all Fable had going for it beyond the first one.
The third was terrible, but I loved TLC.

This is the absolute "game that could have been", to anyone who played it.
It's by Maxis, makers of the Sim series. It was the dream project of founder Will Wright.
You would create a species, then nurture it to evolve, and become a galactic civilization.
Instead, it became a series of mini-games, like combining 2 iPad games or something.
PredaKhaine wrote:Space Marine just lacked...something. But I play it nontheless.
Space Marine did lack that certain something, I can't put my finger on it either.
I guess it's because it's such a short game, a short solo campaign and few multiplayer options.
However, it remains fun, proving to have more staying power than, say, Diablo 3 IMHO.
(I played the heck out of Diablo 3 when it came out, for a month, then never returned to it).
I think Space Marine 2 (which will probably never be made) is a "game that could have been".
They could have polished, completed what they started with Space Marine.

Skyrim. As you may be aware from what I post on this forum, I've put more hours into playing Skyrim than I have put into eating at McDonalds. Why, then, is it disappointing? As much fun as it was, the Civil War quests were boring. The situation isn't that well done. I would have liked to have seen marching armies to different cities, ambushes laid by Imperials as a contingent of Stormcloaks march to Riften, battles featuring cavalry on the plains of Whiterun etc. I would have liked to have seen the Stormcloaks or Imperials actually try to take Whiterun after they lost the siege. What also loses the immersion is that walls seem to do little. I would have liked to have led a small contingent to take back fortresses that had previously been captured. I would have liked to have stormed Falkreath or Dragonbridge or whatever. To me, the civil war is less of a war and more of a linear thing, and that's not really how war should be in a video game. Also, the main quest is quite short.
Another disappointing game, in my mind, was Shogun 2. For some reason, I never warmed to it like I did with Medieval 2, Rome and the first Shogun.

You do realise an army in an Elder Scrolls game is about 10 people?
These epic battles would have been about 20 people all together...
Which is odd because a bandit group sometimes outnumbers entire Imperial armies...

Lego Universe... Ultimate failure was that you had to pay for the game then pay again to play for time.
Also that you could only get it in the US and UK
Before anyone says anything I know it was awesome (aside from those release flaws), I was one of the beta testers
Also, AoE III and Online... Online is too cartoony and I just can't place my finger what it was about III... maybe it was because I felt the races weren't different enough, both gameplay wise and aesthetically...

Don't even get me started. It would of been fantastic of a game if they had spent more time on it. And combined many many more things into the game. The Space stage is a wreck and the best stage is the shortest stage. (Civilization stage) Where you can build your own vechiles and have a fleet of ships that can defend, but no infantry? Wait what? Come on what war is there that has no infantry? Space Stage you send a single ship versus the entire gaxaly! and guess what! You don't have any fleets to protect your homesystems! My home planet I kid you not was constantly under attack, and don't even get me started the biological attacks that happened that were so stupid it ruined the experience. I am an explorer not EPA.
Why am I traveling by myself? Why does the enemy have a massive fleet? And I only have my single ship? At least you could allow for mods so that way I can have the civilization stage that allows me build a fleet and send them against those bloody empires.
My final problem is... Your the leader of your people. Why the hell do they leave by yourself? The center of the galaxy quest is quite unimpressive. And facing the grox is easy, all you do is terraform their planet and they all die. And place down a colony on that planet.

Well luckily, freeware indie games that hope to deliver on the promises spore made are in the works, try Species (I think that's what it's called) and remember to give them kickstarter money.
With Species, Planetary Annihilation, and the Homestuck Video game all up and coming, this is looking like a good era for crowdsourced games.

I really like Retribution but you have a point. A little more time and this game would have been amazing. Just a little more time giving each faction a slightly more unique campaign and longer ending cut scenes would have been amazing.

Homefront - excellent trailer, north america occupied after a surprise attack by korea, so so promising....thought id have a quick blast before i played the game properly....3 hours later the credits are rolling....seriously?!! After wandering around a VERY linear world not really doing much it had only just picked up the pace!!
Space Marine - If ever a game wanted to be, sorry, had the POTENTIAL to be a serious challenger to Gears Of War then this was it. Unlike Gears it didnt drag you down into the grim world of the war you were fighting, they tried to make you care about the characters but unlike gears it didnt give you anything you could grab hold of and relate to, there was an 'aloofness' about the characters who were so convinced that they would win through that it never gave you any reason to doubt it and the chaos marines became more of an annoyance than a challenge. Ultimately finishing the game became a matter of knowing when to mash the buttons rather than approaching it with any degree of thought or skill. Don't get me wrong, i liked the game, you're an ultramarine for crying out loud, BUT being such an avid gears player the attempts at similarities were obvious but it fell just that little bit short. With a bit of a rethink, the next SM game could be a killer!!

Skyrim.
It had such potential, a great open-world exploratory RPG with brilliant graphics, an epic storyline and good gameplay. Alas, it was not to be. It went the COD route with the graphics, deciding "brown is best" and making everything dull and muted, which showed up how primitive the graphics were, there is no proper level scaling, meaning that you can die at any point in the game by coming against an enemy you shouldn't be fighting at your level, turning death from the seldom-experienced letdown it should be into a frequent pain in the arse, the combat was extremely dull, consisting of nothing more than pulling the right trigger to swing your sword, it was way too easy to get lost and forget where you were supposed to be going, you die way too easily, the voice acting was flat and uninspired, the character customization was gimped, removing the option to change your character's age amongst other things, glitches galore, and one of the sloppiest and most inexcusably bad console ports ever farted upon the gaming market (although those last 2 are to be expected of Bethesda).
Could have been great, turned out crap. Haven't played it in ages. Preferred Final Fantasy XIII to be honest.

That's why you need a high performance PC to utilize Skyrim's potential. But Skyrim delivered what most games don't, it was everything I expected it to be, but I wasn't "wowed" by it by any means.
Above all it was a great game with good design and incredible art pieces. I mean think about how much time the designers had to put into making a 8 square mile Scandinavian landscape come to life? Let alone doing all the voice acting and fluff that comes along with the hundreds of books about Tamerial's background.
The ending was pretty flat though, but if you want a perfect game that hits the sweet spot to get that gamer's high you'll be waiting a little while.
I think Mount & Blade could've been better. There are a lot of possibilities to the game that just aren't there. For instance creating a culture and designing units for your kingdom could've made the games longevity last longer, or actually being able to design your castles and towns instead of buying two buildings that don't do much at all. Having your wife fight beside you instead of sitting in the castle could've also been another feature.
I just see all these options that I wish were in the game but aren't. However it's a great game that has a high replay value that I'm still playing and am very excited to see what the sequel will look like.
