How many of these do I need to post before they're no longer 'isolated'? Cause that's my goal.
"We'll I saw a few articles posted by Lordhat on Dakka about people with guns playing the hero*, but didn't see any posted on Dakka about people with guns being evil, so there is definitely no problem at all with gun violence, otherwise I'd have heard anecdotal evidence"
Said no one ever.

Such a statement is not my goal. Guns doing harm always gets a lot of press; guns doing good, not so much. Just trying to rectify the imbalance. Pontificating, I leave to others nowadays.
I think that's mainly because an item made for the sole purpose of killing humans isn't seen as a force of good by most of the civilized world.

A tool is only what a person makes of it. I use it for the sole purpose of entertainment, providing sustenance for my family, and protection of my family and others if necessary. I have no intention of EVER using one to kill humans. Funny, all the use I get out of mine, all the purpose I find for them, and none of it involves killing humans. Maybe if others would start realizing it's not purely a killing machine, they won't be so put off with it.

So... should I start a thread every single time a firearm is used for evil, rather than stop it?

Incorrect. A gun never shoots anything. People shoot guns, and that didn't even happen this time. The only injuries were caused by a knife.
I know, the point is a gun can do bad things and good things because their relative lethality.

You don't really need to, it happens anyway.

You sure about that? Please find an example that isn't exceptional (barring the recent one that's quite obviously satire).

It was hilarious.
I must infer that you would only like to see 'exceptional' instances of a firearm saving lives; What would the criteria for that be? Number of lives saved? How would one measure that? It's easy to count the number of lives taken in an incident.

You do bring up a good point. I suppose I view it as less of a binary situation because whenever someone posts a thread about, say, a mass shooting, I view it as a news story in an of itself, and not an anti-gun advertisement (despite the thread's inevitable devolution), whereas a thread such as this one I consider to be intended as a pro-gun advertisement. There is no news story here beyond the polarizing element, whereas the other side of the coin actually has something newsworthy about it on its surface.

If this is a commonplace event, it is not particularly newsworthy.
If not commonplace it undermines that idea that guns are keeping people safe.
I do think we have a few too many gun threads going on at the moment. It would be best to fold this one into one of the others.
