How the bloody hell are these elites choices and not HS?! From the looks of the site, Tau don't have that many HS choices, yet a gigantic power suit isn't one of them? How does that make any sense?

It's so you can have MOAR MISSILESIDES!!1!!11!!

I'd like to think it's an attempt at balance.

It'd be more balanced if the Riptide was in HS, then you couldnt field Riptides and Missilesides/Skyrays lol.

Yeah you're probably right there. I have no intimate knowledge of the Tau codex, and very little experience playing against it. However my opponent made full use of the HS and most of the Elite slots.

Probably due to it's high mobility combined with it's nature of being a crisis suit.

Your lucky it's not in Heavy Support. They might have given it better secondary guns, maybe even two pair. And allowed mutitrackers to let it shoot 3 weapons.

Things could have been worse. I think it's fair pointed for a BS3 model.

I agree. Since it's not Heavy that means we can take 3 Ap2 and 3 Ap3 largeblasts in a single list.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

I'd assume part of it is for the same sort of reason Dreadnaughts are in the elite slot in most marine armies. From a fluff perspective, the suits are exclusively used by those in the Shas'vre rank (highest rank before the 'El and 'O commanders) and are still in their prototype phase, meaning the pilot is a battle-hardened veteran and the suits themselves are in limited supply.

From a gameplay perspective, it is probably to provide a viable competitor to Crisis suits, who otherwise have traditionally held a stranglehold on the Elite slot.

Looking at Tau HS, they have tanks or suits with low mobility. The riptide is a highly mobile unit, so it is not that unusual to have it as an elite choice instead of HS.

Tau has more HS than elite.

I don't see the value in this.

I like the Ion Accelerator as an anti-air weapon, along with a fusion blaster.

Makes sense to me. Seems pretty elite. Lol.

Heavy support should be (mostly, but maybe not entirely) for tanks and primary tank killers, first and foremost. Thats not to say tank killing should only come from there, but thats kinda how I see Heavy Support.

Riptides are far more about anti-personnell, and as a non-armoured unit, it fits the Elite slot, to me.

2 theories -

1. it's a lot more mobile than any of the other HS choices, able to move and fire and move again.

2. It's to force the choice between it, Crisis, and Stealth Suits.

#2 makes the most sense to me, from a codex design standpoint. If it was HS instead, there would be little reason to take Hammerheads at all, when for 55pts more you could get an AP2 gun instead of AP3, with more shots on a more mobile, more survivable platform. In addition, causing them to compete with Crisis in particular means you have to structure the rest of your list to compensate for the lack of the Crisis' capabilities.

I'm not to familiar with the Tau codex, so I didn't know they had a lot of HS choices. I was going off of the that there's about 3 proper kits on their store page
It makes more sense now, with the fluff reason of only high ranking ( or elite ) fire caste warriors using them and the completion between this and a crisis suit.
I can't really see hover tanks being tanks with low mobility though, but again, I really don't know that much about tau

Also, sorry for hijacking your thread OP

Because a 190 point MC with interceptor and an AP2 large blast that is very mobile is bad? It may not be operating at peak performance, but it's still a good option for allies.
