Subject: Re:Disney has given EA the license for Star Wars on the NextGen consoles.
Popularity might not equate to quality, but the length of time that a title remains popular is one of those things that can be related to what people deem to be quality.
A year on, Mass Effect 3 was still going strong on a platform which is well known for having a demographic which skips from title to title.
If that's not a signpost of "quality game design", I don't know what is.
I'll assume it's true, first of all, and point out that for ever ME3 or Dead Space 3, there's a Dragon Age II or a TOR.
And I would like to counter point, that for every Dragon Age II or TOR, there is a Brutal Legend and an Alice: Madness Returns.
Is EA clean, business wise? Oh hell no. But they aren't as bad as the hipsters who voted them worst company in the world think. Seriously, how messed up is it that a VIDEO GAME company gets that "Reward"?

What I do expect, though, are games like Force Unleashed 2 - short, visually attractive but rushed and soulless games for the quick crash grab. Cue Dragon Age 2, Dead Space 3, C&C F2P etc etc.

True, but Leia is kinda like Bayonetta, Han Solo kinda like Luigi and Kazooie is basically Luke Skywalker rip off so there would be other quite suitable developers / producers for SW universe.

And let's not forget Chewbacca is like The King of the Cosmos in Katamari.

Zero surprise here. EA's at least not the worst of the big companies, so maybe there's some hope.

I second the EA negativity, BioWare games have slowly but steadily declined in quality since their acquisition. ME3 was awesome but a little short and had an amazingly unsatisfying ending.
DICE doing Battlefront 3, as absolutely amazing as this would be, probably wouldn't happen but... a man can dream!

..."Short"?
What did you skip all the side missions? Skip hunting around the galaxy for extraneous War Assets?
Getting everything is not short.

It won't happen--because as I've said ad nauseum, Battlefront is pretty much a dead property at this point.
EA/DICE are most likely going to release their own property under a new title to avoid the preconceived notions that individuals have in regards to the existing Battlefront property.

Another game where I get to kill white people and monsters in space!
You do realize you can have better Stars Wars experience sword fighting with your grown brother and nerf guns with John Williams's music in the background.
Lets play a guessing game. How many Star Wars games will come out in the next 5 years?
But Battlefront was great! They would make so much money if they made a 3rd one...

The alternative is Activision, which has straight up said it wants to suck the fun out of gaming.

I have faith in Visceral, maybe. My opinions on Bioware have probably been stressed enough. DICE was never very good in my eyes. By product of hiring a bunch of modders to make your game and then firing them when they've done all the work for you (for which you then take the credit).

Sometimes, it blows my mind how bad of a job game developers are at figuring out what their fans wants and what will sell
Sometimes, it blows my mind how bad of a job fans do at understanding that franchises generally do not survive going from one developer to the next.
Which is back to the previous argument. If a new dev buys the rights to the franchise and wants to make money...why dont they make a NEW Battlefront. Its pretty close to a guaranteed blank check

I'd love to see another Battlefront myself. I'd also like to see some more non-Jedi games in the setting. That gritty, grimdark game, Level something, that looked neat.

Which franchise are we talking about here?
If we're referring to Battlefront:
The rights to the Battlefront franchise likely rested with the developer who did those games. That developer is long since dead, with the franchise having likely died with the developers.
Electronic Arts likely has a caveat in the licensing agreement that they can make a game similar to Battlefront, but they cannot slap the Battlefront title on it.

Well EA owned pandemic studios which was the dev that made the battlefront series. I would assume that EA retained the rights for a battlefront 3 when they closed pandemic.

EA didn't get Pandemic until after Pandemic had lost the Star Wars license.

But now EA have the Star Wars licence and Pandemic...

What the hell are you quoting me for? Are you trying to say that developers have a good understand of their audience, they pay close attention to what they want and work extremely hard to create games that fullfill the expectations and desires of the audience?

You made a smarmy comment insinuating that developers do not understand their fans and what the fans want/will buy.
I made a smarmy comment replying to your smarmy comment, insinuating that fans need to get a better understanding as to why developers do not cater to the farfetched whims of fans.

The closure of Free Radical Design does not mean that the "rights to Battlefront 3" defaulted to Lucas Arts, nor does it mean that Disney's acquisition of Lucas Arts included those rights.
