Subject: Attached Tau Vehicle Drones - are they a separate unit from the vehicle or not?

Attached Drones
Whilst attached to the vehicle, drones are treated as embarked passengers (although they don't count against a vehicle's Transport Capacity). This means that while they are attached, they can make shooting attacks as if they were passengers shooting from Fire Points, using their location on the vehicle to determine line of sight, range, etc. Unlike other models shooting from Fire Points, attached drones must shoot at the same target as the vehicle they are attached to. Target Acquired abilities used by a Tau vehicle, or vehicle squadron, also apply to any attached drones in the unit.
"Point Defence Targeting Relay
A vehicle with a point defence targeting relay can fire Overwatch, but only with weapons of Strength 5 or less. If the vehicle has any attached drones, they may also fire Overwatch with weapons of Strength 5 or less. In addition, the vehicle has the Supporting Fire special rule."
OPTION C: Without PDTR, you are only using the normal rules for attached drones, which say they fire as if they were passengers, with the restriction that they must target the same unit. This allows them to fire overwatch. If you have PDTR, this allows the vehicle to fire overwatch as well, but adds the restriction that neither the vehicle nor the drones may fire overwatch using weapons higher than S5.
EDIT: The only real argument I could see against it is the part where it says, "Must target the same unit as the vehicle". Since without it, the vehicle cannot target a unit for overwatch, an argument could be made that attached drones may not either.

There is NO SUCH THING as MORE ADVANCED in 40k!!! There are ONLY 2 LEVELS of RULES: Basic and Advanced. THE END. Stop saying "More Advanced". That is not a recognized thing in modern 40k!!!!

They wouldn't. The Tau Devilfish has no firepoints.
It was more a hypothetical conversation. If the Devilfish did have fire points would the embarked drones have overwatch. I favoured yes my flatmate favoured no.
That brings tom mind a question.
Can drones "re-attach" to the vehicle?

I think the drones can fire overwatch and the vehicle can't. However, the wording seems to indicate that the drones attached to vehicles DON'T have the 'Support fire' special rule.
So they can fire overwatch only if the vehicle is charged?
I'd be fine either way, it needs an FAQ bad

Looks like an editing error to me. I would guess that this upgrade’s rules were written before the Drone rules were expanded to give them “virtual fire points”. If the drone rules didn’t include text explaining how their “fire points” work, then the drones would be prevented from using Overwatch by the vehicle’s lack of any fire points.
