WoW, sorry to all my battle brothers. I feel fortunate now that I get to play 2-4 times a week at my leisure. I feel our gaming community is strong and has almost doubled in size from when I started playing almost a year ago.
I had one of my armies out for a commission and I didn't really want to play my other army at all, at the time. So I have an inkling of an idea on how some of you feel, albiet a minute one.

I usually paint when I have the itch to game but I can not. It's how you end up with a fully painted army.

Vassal 40k isn't an option in my opinion. I find it laborious and about as fun as staring at a screen for hours. I can't have fun when the "models" are so bland.
Others clearly enjoy it, but It's not my cup of tea.

My first thought about Vassal was "Yay", which quickly turned into an opinion like yours. It seems complicated and less-than-thrilling, but that could just be the overwhelming nature of its learning curve. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thank you for looking for me! Technically I live in Burnaby, which is the city to the east of Vancouver. Only two of the flags are there and one is the GW store. Sadly, I use public transit since I am freshly out of University, so my travelling to stores in neighbouring cities is hampered. I find the local GW to be a bit claustrophobic between the lack of space and the eternal desire of the employees to sell product. Its still my best option. The other place nearby I haven't gotten around to checking out yet but it could be good. It is on my list of things to do next day off. I have checked all of the nearby places online and sadly most of them hold 40k games on Sunday, which I sleep through most recovering from the previous shift and spend the rest preparing for the next night's shift. None-the-less I remain hopeful! I have also posted on our Find A Game forum in an attempt to meet the challenges of this problem.

I just sigh and mope about it a lot. The only FLGS I've got that I know plays it is the local GW. Right now I'm in an ok spot because I have weekends free mostly, which is their bigger 40k turn outs. I don't even know that there are any clubs in the area.
I wanted to get back into Warhammer for years, but didn't for lack of opponents. When my wife's uncle and friends started playing, I thought it was a good time to start, but nope. I've only played him once, and they're all at least 40 minutes to an hour away which is far more a deterrent for them than me. I'm willing to drive. I put a lot of money and effort into these models, I want to play with them!
My neighbors play, but for some reason I'm a unnaturally shy about asking for a game. That's my own fault though, but typically, I work weekends, so never get to play. Posting to my local GW never gets any response even though many people do post on there.
It is a bit discouraging. I just ordered my TWC, which will put me at about 1500 points, but I don't know how badly I really want to continue collecting if I'm not going to be able to use them very often. I just don't know many wargamers around here, though I know they exist. We're a passive lot here.

I went to Home Depot, had them cut a board into 4x3 piesces and then I bought a hinge and drilled it in. Now I have a portable board I can take in my car. I got a big plastic container for terrain. Goes in the car on top of the board and went to Joannes fabrice and got a couple different pieces of Felt cut to size. Warhammer bags go in and off i go.
I can bring the game to you. We can play at a park if we want to. Slap it down at home and tell the wife to go downstairs for a while. Hehehe. Mancave time.
Vassal is a little complicated and not nearly as satisfying but it works and iot makes for easy battle reports.

I was going to comment how I was lucky until it hit me: I only get to play once a month, or twice if I'm damn lucky. And only in tournaments.
Uh, well, I guess focusing on the hobby side really helps holding on until your next game. It seems to be doing wonders for me

I am in the same boat my friend. I have been in the hobby for a few years. And used to play once or twice a month with friends or at the FLGS. But I recently moved to where there are two stores just havent been about to get in and play due to son and work and girlfriend. Every night that I end up free. It is a night for some other game at the other gaming stores, mainly friday nights which is Friday Night Magic...... fething magic: the gathering.... so I end up drinking at the friendly local bar, or FLB.
In the week, I changed my schedule around so I can have Thursday Nights free, because apparently that is 40k night at one store. So hopefully I will be able to game once a week... much to the chagrin of my gf, because she loses out. The scarifices I make for the Emperor.

This. It took me weeks to understand it, and it's just too complicated. It's fun to try army lists and things without the models and without need to proxy/Counts As but most of the time is spent figuring how to do most things rather than playing. I can get over the appearance haha
I used to play quite often (like, most every weekend) but then AP Chemistry happened....

Rock back and forth in a dark corner of the room, holding my models close.... =( It's sad but I do have plenty to keep busy - I could crone about how if I could go back in time.... You youngsters out there, enjoy the time you have, SERIOUSLY. One day, you're not going to be able to build and paint (and game) as wantonly as you may now.

I am in the same boat with not being able to play very often at all. I paint to ease the pain or play pc games like Fallout Tactics , which is just like kill team.
