There were robots in the epic game and that was definitely post heresy by the time Titan legions rolled around.

The exact post-heresy status of Imperial robots is something GW is avoiding, much like the Sisters of Silence. They haven't decided if it should be "mainstream" post-Heresy canon yet (and yes, despite what many say there is a loose binding-canon to 40k with regards to what is published).

If Demiurg (Squats 2.0) make it into prime-time in 40K, robots would be a good fit for them I think.

Well imperial robots were never AI. They ran programs or could be directly controlled. In the game you had to map out a flow chart that dictated their actions for the game, or you could have a character control them.
Same with epic scale basically, you gave them orders but you had little direct control of them if I remember.
Bombbots were great. "You are green!" Boom!

Demiurg and Squats are two completely separate races. And Demiurg are unlikely to ever appear as a 40K army.

Yup separate races. And GW wants about as much to do with Squats as George Lucas wants to do with The Star Wars Holiday Special. But, for now, the Demiurg are the "spiritual successors" to the Squats and have inherited the dwarf archetype. We have yet to see how far GW will take all that. I think robots would be a good fit, not just because Squats had them and Demiurg have automatons... But also because I think in a sci-fi setting it would fit the "dwarves".

Given that the Squats actually got a mention in the 6th ed rulebook, this doesn't seem entirely accurate any more.
It's not a sign that they're returning to the game, certainly... but they're obviously still considered a part of the background. And never went away at all in Epic.

We've seen how far they'll take that. They said back when the Demiurg were introduced to BFG that they had no intention of adding the Demiurg into 40K, as they are a space-based race and really don't involve themselves in ground conflicts.
