Starships mount auspex systems that reach out tens of millions of kilometers, if not more. It's not inconceivable that a scan was done on the approach of the Tempestus, which allowed the Astral Knights to deploy, via drop-pod, to generally-appropriate areas, who then used hand-held auspex scanners to make their way towards the control node.

It would also have not taken a tactical genius to note that the Necrons themselves were defending a specific location, and so if you want to find this "special place", you simply find the points of stiffest resistance and fight through them (or flank around them).

The Knights Astral also did not destroy the World Engine, they simply took its shields and weapon systems largely off-line. The World Engine itself was destroyed by the fleet outside.

Find where to put it would be pretty easy I would think. Put the bombs on the glowing green stuff

Much the same thing with the World Engine. Point an auspex down a hallway, it beeps and bloops and shows you "Hey, Chief, there's a fethload of quantum energy flowing down this pipe, coming out of that doohickey over there."

It doesn't take a super-genius to figure out that blowing up that doohickey is going to cause significant damage.

An auspex is a short-range device.

The World Engine was the size of a planet.

The passage relied on contrived coincidences that were astronomically unlikely (Like somehow boarding right next to the power cores), or it relied on the Space Marines being able to run around at hypersonic speeds through the complex.

It was stupid, and people should just accept that fact.

Gotta agree here, it was 600 marines (I think) that landed (IN DROP PODS, no Land Speeders or any other kind of vehicles) and wandered through a giant thing the size of a planet, while being assaulted by thousands upon thousands of Necron Warriors, and found the centre (Somehow.. Not like there was any indicators??) and blew it up with some meltabombs.. WAAAAAARRDDDD!!

I always thought of melta bombs as akin to super thermite grenades. Not so much as a blast but intense heat that slags anything within a small radius.

That's one way to look at them. It's also supported in a number of sources.

However, other sources make them akin to tactical nuclear devices.

As previously mentioned, they're exactly as powerful as the plot needs them to be.

Imagine a normal bomb, is comparable to a flamethrower. Big radius, and admirable damage.

To compare, a meltabomb is a blowtorch. Not as big a flame/explosion, but much -much- more potent if applied in the right place.

It's a TRAP!! Never attack them, they're simply mannequins or disguises for the real Ork Kommandos that are lurking around somewhere..

Nob bikers can actually still be a massive pain to deal with and unleash a world of hurt, especially since now very few things can ID them. But that's a topic for another thread.

I thought the Astral Knights plunged their massive Fortress-Monastery ship right into the world engine to cripple it, which led to the chapter being wiped as a result...

They couldn't land drop pods on it or anything because of the shields, so they slammed their Battle Barge thing through the shields and then drop-podded into the breach made by it, they then breached the hull and went through the World Engine, their Chapter Master then got to wherever the cool stuff all is and blew it up with meltabombs ;3

don't forget the part where they survived for weeks under attack (just the 700 marines) and the CM and (I believe) 5 others are the only ones to make it to the shield generator and with his dying breath he blew it, crippling the shields so that the other battlebarges were free to obliterate it. Then (somehow) the admech picked up the crashed battlebarge from the wreckage and dropped it off on a scoured planet.

Oh yes, I almost forgot about that -_- After they were assailed by legion upon legion of Necron Warriors, a couple of which are essentially the equivalent of a Space Marine..

And in any old mass consumer scifi (or space opera) things always have no safeguards, no emergency valves or automatic shutdown, no redundancy. That's why Star Trek always has that idiotic warp core breach threatening to blow up the ship, and those exploding bridge consoles whenever the ship takes a hit.

No safeguards, unless the plot requires some for the heroes to disable first ofc.

By the same token, if your maintenance access must cross some kind of abyssal gulf within your ship/space-station/power-plant/whatever, said access must be a bridge no more than a meter wide and is not permitted to have guardrails or safety-catches of any kind.

And if the hero must cross through an irradiated chamber, their will be no hazard suits available for said chamber.

And if the hero is fighting an enemy, he must be completely invincible, but with one key, easily exploitable weakness that the hero can capitalise on at the last second before he is killed..
