There is one game I know of, that I had been thinking about while reading that article. World in Flames I have the "basic" edition of the game that "only" has about 1400 counters and enough maps to fill a large table. The opening line for the full WWII scenario says "welcome to 50 hours of gaming pleasure." With all of the expansions for it, you're looking at nearly 5000 counters and a couple more maps.
Always loved playing it years ago, probably almost impossible for me to find the time, space, and players to play it now. But, there is a computer game version on the way, slowly buy surely.

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

Axes and Allies comes to mind, as well as Starfleet Battles.

I've also seen a navel submarine/ ship game out there that the turn took all day ... almost for each one of the ships. The guys started playing it and had to go through a load of super detailed charts and graphs for. Don't remember the name of the game, but the ships were the small metal model ones, and the guys I saw playing it had Midway on a 4 X 6 table. It was pretty neat, but dragged out to the point of torturous, from what I remember.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Most of my "want to play" games fall under "absurdly complicated rules" rather than "epic scope/long playing time".

I'll just re-iterate Campaign for North Africa. It is pretty much the game in the OP only restricted to the North Africa part of WWII.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

good find ! Thanks !

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

yeah same for me, I'm actually working with a friend to just create our own game. trying to come up with an epic scope/long play time game with straightforward rules. Wont be anything fancy or anything we want to get produced into a real game as I think we are going to just take rules from other systems and try to mesh a few games together into something workable
