I can't justify taking 21 Plague Marines to shoot bolters at my enemy.

I'm sure other armies are not as brutal as anti charging units as the tau.

If people played 40k for fun they wouldn't be making power gaming lists.

If assaulting armies are winning tourneyments with 6th ed I'd like to know what they are doing. This way I can try to mold my armies that are assault based into something that can win games.

Everyone plays 40k for fun, in one way or another. But fun means different things to different people and comes from different things. For some its winning (at tournaments or not). For others, its having a close fought game. For others its the story.

The thing is, a game is never going to be fun if you dont get a chance to actually play, which seems to be whats happened here when you got blown off the table by Tau.

Tau can still be beaten, it just takes some thought and experience of their new capabilities.

And youre right, most armies arent as brutal in anti-assault as the Tau.

If you really dont like them, then dont play against them. Noone can force you to.

With regards to your Nids, make them shooty. Nids are supprisingly shooty. We have dual TL Devourer Flyrants, dual TL devourer Fex's in spores, the doom, Zoans, Hive guard, outflanking/spore devilgants, Deathspitter Warriors. Lots of things.

Im currently running a list that inlcudes 2 Primes with 6 warriors each (all with Death spitters), 2 podded TL Devourer Fex's, Deathleaper, the Doom and 2 squads of Ymgarls. Its a lot of fun when it works (which is only sometimes!). Many of these arent common choices. So any unit/army can be made to work if you put some thought into it.

Well I realized the guy was cheating. He told me his Riptide had six wounds. It has 5 with a missile drone. He never fielded the drone.

I also should have been targetting the 10 man squads of Firewarriors with an Ethereal leading them.

I have to look in my book but he was moving and firing his rapid fire weapons. He said you can move and shoot your full range or rapid fire if you are withing half range.

Target priority is a big part of the game in any edition. And yes, Rapid Fire weapons are actually good now. You get 1 shot at max range, even if you move, and 2 shots at half range (no longer just 12").

I play to be at least hold my own. I don't aim to put models on the table and then proceed to put them back into their carrying case.

Sounds like he did add a wound to the riptide, but you can move and shoot full distance or rapid fire now.

Being an assault army you have 2 priority targets while trying to close the gap. I don't think one is more important than the other, if you can eliminate both then great:

1). The ethereal that allows the extra shots.
2). Marker light squads, either drones or pathfinders, that will let them over watch at a higher ballistic skill.

Both of those things will cause you to get chewed up and spit out.

Think of it like real life: you can't assault an em placed enemy while thier machine guns are able to fire. It's suicide. Likewise you can't assault Tau untill thier ethereal and marker light support is suppressed.

Well after going over the rules again I had forgotten some things. It happens when you have only played 1 game of 6th.

He had a squad of kroot screening the Firewarriors. I should have declared that I was targeting the kroot outside of cover. This way he gets no cover saves and the lines to the FW's would have been cleared.

I do how ever think it is ridiculous that the ethereals give their power to ALL Tau models withing 12 inches.

Ethereals are really good and probably IMO the best HQ and the one I would take, but it's a risk/reward. 12" is really not that much and forces you to castle and crowd around him, and if he goes down, you lose 2 VP.

Hail the Emperor.
