So why is this person campaigning to put a female figure on money in the first place? Its not like women have been excluded prior.
It doesn't matter why anyone might campaign for or against to put a man, a woman or a monkey on a currency note. The point is that you can't do it by issuing threats of violence against the other side.
No, the real point is we have come very close to blaming the victim just now.
I think it is despicable, but the woman in question shouldn't have put herself out there in a format where she could be abused.
Is that closer?

The concept was that when the current £5 note is retired, aside from HRM, there would be zero women on any of the British notes.
Zero, zip, null, Nada.
And the argument is, that's a bit rubbish. So there was a campaign to keep at least 1 women on there, which seems fair enough to me.

The Internet offers anonymity and a platform on which to say anything unchecked. It means people says things they just wouldn't in real life for fear of being punched, look at the way some users behave on Dakka, within the rules but aggressive/unpleasant beyond what is socially acceptable. The Internet can turn ordinary people into donkey-caves, and donkey-caves into monsters.
There's a lot of misogyny on the Internet, it's everywhere. So is racism, and homophobia just look at the comments on many YouTube videos. Look at historical videos about nazis on YouTube and try reading those comments! There's a reason many of these videos have the comments turned off.
The aggression against women online occasionally gets highlighted as it has now but I'm sure it's been discussed before and little has changed. I think it's come up with online gaming, where women are abused by make players. It's like they want to remain sad single people because they don't have a clue what to do when a woman comes along with a shared interest.

The rape threats levelled against that lady pretty much prove why its so important to make sure recognising the achievements of women is so important. It's just symbolism, but in the fight against the hateful little weirdos that threaten rape over twitter, it's all part of a really important fight. But more than anything, talking about the faces on national currency always makes me envious of the UK, USA, and other countries that have impressive lists of famous people to put on their money. You look on Australian money, and while I'm not belittling the people on our currency, not even Australians know who the feth they were. Basically the only names that you'd think most people would know are Banjo Patterson and Nellie Melba, and that's only because they have pretty memorable names (I mean, Nellie Melba was an opera singer in the inter-war era - who gives a gak, really?) Ask people here who's on the $10 note, and they'll say they don't know. You show them the picture on the note and they'll say they don't know who that is. You read them the name next to it, Mary Gilmore, and they still won't know who that is. And I don't either, and it's only from just looking it up that I've just learned she was a poet and a journalist who wrote for some trade union publications. Not exactly reaching Jane Austen levels of fame and achievement there...

They should have put Maggie Thatcher on the Fiver. Then we could all watch as Scotland fights a purely internal battle as to whether to have £5 or throw it away.
I think there would be 10,000-50,000 head explosion deaths per year but it would be worth it - for scientific reasons obviously.

In the US and UK you seem to get some kind of crossover between 'actually genuinely pretty damn famous' and 'has enough cultural respect among the nattering classes to end up on a banknote'. As a result you can look at the money and see Charles Darwin or Lincoln and you know who it is and what they did.
