How many of you can drive a manual transmission?
Yup, and don't have any problems. It's second nature.
I can, but I have to pay attention. I goof up sometimes.
Never learned, never attempted to learn. Automatics are the way to go.

Anyone knows how to "speed shift"? That is, revving the engine up and up shifting to a higher gear quickly without the use of the clutch?

I can do that on just about any manual... It's a technique mostly for truckers and racers that's designed to save your breaks.

That's because Semi's have to shift 20 times to get any sort of speed

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

I would do that when going from 3rd to 5th on the highway.

I learned to drive on an automatic, but my first car was a stick that I loved to death.

I currently have a Hyundai Sonata with a six speed manual. It's a stupid amount of fun. It's very tough to track down a sedan in a stick though.

I prefer manuals, but I'm equally comfortable in an automatic. My daily driver is an automatic, for the sake of my fiance. My '89 Mustang is a manual, my '70 Cougar is an automatic. I'd have preferred to find the Cougar in manual, but the car I bought was in great shape for a great price, so I settled for automatic.

My first car was standard but I haven't driven such in a long time. Wouldn't be shocked if I couldn't do it anymore.

I've read (according to google!) that larger engines (more common in the US than Europe or the UK where gas is a lot more expensive) are better suited to automatic transmissions, and that advances in technology are starting to make automatics more fuel efficent than manuals (used to be the other way 'round) and apparently faster acceleration than manuals. Crazy!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Manual is the way to go, unless you do long commutes.

Having been a rep I mostly did one speed - up on your ass - so having an auto or manual didn't really matter.

I don't really get on with tiptronic or flappy paddle gear boxes, although those with a double clutch or pre-selector are pretty nice.

It's like riding a bike.

the hard part of driving stick is in the feel, not in anything cognitive.

It's true. Most high-end performance cars (Aston Martin, Lamborghini, ect.) don't come with the option for a manual anymore, since they can tune their transmissions to actually perform better. Most have a dual-clutch transmission with the shift paddels behind the steering wheel. They're better since there's no delay with pushing the clutch or actually shifting - it's all done with the solenoids inside the trans...basically, an automatic transmission that you control manually.

Its been years since I drove clutch. I'm pretty sure I'd be fine if I was put in a manual car and told to go somewhere.

If I can't find it, I'll grind it.

An young teenage Afghan guide that was with my brothers EOD team taught himself how to drive manual when my brother was wounded clearing some old ordinance. My bro and his team gave him all the cash they had amongst them when he got safely to base. Was a decent haul for the kid, wonder what became of him.
