There are pictures of models standing on these in the video he posted to the kickstarter. Not, like, a whole squad or anything, but some.

So these represent a combination of the two. Scatter wreckage roughly the same size as the vehicle.

Area terrain "roughly the same size as the vehicle" doesn't require it to have the vehicle's outline, imo.

These items seem like they are solving a problem that doesn't exist... a standard crater would work fine (and imo, actually better) in most cases.

A line of sweet themed craters, I could get behind... although I'm sure there's a fair bit of competition in that area.

while I wouldnt call it a "problem" these terrain pieces cater to people that are too lazy to make there own craters, and nothing is more american then creating a product that helps people too lazy to do it themselves!

Of course they are solving a problem that doesn't exist. Almost every product is something that people are too lazy to make for themselves. If you don't enjoy it, simply pass on the KS.

As for me, I think they look better than a felt outline on the table, so I'll be picking some up.

Update #2:

Thanks again for your continued support! I’ve got a couple of issues I’d like to discuss.

First off, I’ve gotten a notes from a couple of folks (primarily non-40k players) curious about what these models are intended to represent. Fair enough. I should be upfront in stating that these wrecks are intended to be a gaming aid that is compatible with the Games Workshop miniature wargame, Warhammer 40,000*. Specifically, the wrecks are intended to represent the area of difficult terrain that is left after a vehicle explodes. As such, the wrecks are constrained by several rules-related issues: 1) they must represent an area of “rough terrain” that roughly approximates the size and shape of the vehicle destroyed; 2) they cannot block line of sight; and 3) they should allow models to be placed on them. Thus, while the wrecks may be fairly abstract for players of other games, I suspect that players of Warhammer 40,000 will find that they fit the bill perfectly for representing the remains of an exploded vehicle.

I’ll be attending the Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge in Vancouver, WA this weekend, August 9th to 11th. The OFCC is a large (currently 96 player) team-based Warhammer 40,000 invitational tournament put on by Ordo Fanaticus. Ordo Fanaticus is a great wargaming club headquartered in Portland, OR (and on the internet at http://www.ordofanaticus.com/) that serves as the gathering place for a large part of the Pacific Northwest wargaming community. I’ll be taking my Necrons to the tournament, representing my local club (the Bellingham Warhamsters). If you’ll be there (or at the Ordo Open, being held that Friday), feel free to stop by, say “Hi”, and take a look at some of the wrecks in person. I’ll have some casts from the master molds available to peruse, and several of the wrecked vehicle markers will be added to the prize raffle for the event.

Finally, a word for Canadian pledgers. Feel free to pledge at the non-International levels, adding an additional $14 to the $24 or $36 reward levels, or an additional $28 to the $60 reward level to cover the differential to shipping to Canada. Just drop me a note in the post-Kickstarter survey and I’ll make sure everything arrives safely. Additionally, if you are in British Columbia, and plan to come stateside anytime, you’re welcome to pay US prices and arrange for local pickup here in Bellingham, WA (which is about 20 minutes south of the border off of I-5).

Human Corps unlocked - Next stop Space Elves
Thanks to your support, the Human Corps wrecks have been unlocked! The Human Corp Walkers are now available as a Category A wreck, and the Human Corp Transport Tank (which is sized correctly for vehicles built on a transport or battle tank chassis) is available as a Category C wreck.

Next for your consideration, I present to you a veritable Space Elfapalooza. When the elves left Middle Earth, the other races were a bit relieved. While elves are beautiful, and graceful, and long-lived, they’re also pretty full of themselves. Frankly, they’re jerks. You can imagine, therefore, the disappointment of the human race once they took to the stars and rediscovered their old friends, the elves. It turns out the space elves are just as insufferable as elves, and their long stint wandering the galaxy did nothing to instill a sense of modesty in them. Thus, when they took to battling one another, the other races took particular delight in watching the space elf vehicles explode.

If we hit $2000, I'll be able to unlock the Space Elf wrecks, which will include a Category A Walker, a Category B Speeder, and a Category C Transport Tank. The Space Elf wrecks were graceful vehicles, typified by elegant curves and smooth gems. At that level we’ll also unlock the Evil Space Elf wrecks, consisting of a Category B Speeder and a Category C Transport Skiff.

Another update!

Space Elves Unlocked - Next up, Space Orcs
Update #4 · Aug 13, 2013 · 1 comment

I had a great weekend at the OFCC. Thanks for everyone's kind words and support! We have an amazing regional wargaming community, and the folks from Ordo Fanaticus put on an event that typifies the spirit of Pacific NW wargaming.

Thanks to you, the Space Elf wrecks have been unlocked! The Space Elf Walkers are now available as a Category A wreck, the Space Elf and Evil Space Elf Speeders are available as Category B wrecks, and the Space Elf Transport Tank and the Evil Space Elf Transport Skiff are available as Category C wrecks.

Next up, we're venturing into new territory, for wrecks that have not yet been built. I'll be including photos of the outlines of these wrecks, so you have an idea of the shapes that will be offered. In regards to the size of these wrecks, all of these are intended to be compatible with Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 miniature wargame.

I've been selecting the next wrecks to offer based on comments from backers. If you have something you'd like to see next, please let me know! I still hope to be able to unlock the Tecnhocratic Mecha Federation, the Cyborg of Anubis, and the Chaotic Monster wrecks before the end of the Kickstarter. Let me know the order in which you'd like to see things offered.

If we hit $2500, I'll be able to unlock the Space Orc wrecks, which will include a Category A Walker, a Category A Heavy Weapon Bike, a Category C Transport Truck, and a Category C Heavy Transport Wagon. The Space Orc wrecks are typified by ramshackle construction, with lots of roughly cut steel plates riveted together.

If we hit $2750, I'll be able to unlock the Alien Bug tunneling markers. The Alien Bugs don't leave wrecks as much as they leave gaping holes in the ground which vomit forth endless floods of more bugs. I originally sculpted these worm-like creatures emerging from the ground for use at Walpurgis 3, a Malifaux tournament. I've received several requests to produce them for broader availability, so I'm hoping to raise the funds to pour some new molds. The smaller markers are 50mm in diameter (and come in a pack of 2 as a Category A choice) and the larger marker is a Category B wreck. The Infinity models by Corvus Belli in the last photo are shown for scale purposes only.

If you watch the video they have a solution for that.

Will these be sold online or only for the duration of the kickstarter?

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

People who have no desire to do so are not lazy. The end.

With that logic then anyone who doesn't hand sculpt all their miniatures for their entire army are also lazy because they bought model kits. Wrong.

If I like a creative product that someone makes, I'm not a bad person because I want it. This is why people buy art of all kinds.

Okay, so the answer is that a storefront will be launched post-kickstarter but no orders will be made until all KS backers have had their orders fulfilled.

Final Stretch Goals and New Pledge Levels
Update #5 · Aug 20, 2013 · comment
As we’re moving into the final 10 days of the campaign, there were a couple of things I thought I’d update. First off, I’ve poured the master molds for the Space Orc and Technocratic Mecha Federation wrecks. The pictures are below.

Second, I thought it might be wise to lay out the stretch goals remaining for the campaign. I’ve listed all of the remaining pledge goals (and the wreck categories and approximate sizes) below. If there’s a specific race or wreck type you were looking for, this should help you plan. I've added photos of the approximate outlines for the wrecks that have not yet been completed to the stretch goal section of the main Kickstarter page.

Finally, to help us reach those final stretch goals I’ve added two new pledge levels: “Wreckpocalypse Now” for $175 (limited to 5), and “One of Each” for $200 (unlimited). Each of these get you one of every wreck unlocked, with additional add-ons allowed. If you’re an international backer, and you want to pledge at either of these levels, please add an additional $50 to your pledge to cover the additional shipping. If you are Canadian, an additional $28 (as opposed to $50) will cover the shipping. Hopefully these pledge levels will be of use for gaming clubs, or to folks who want to have a variety of exploded vehicle markers on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. If we make it to $3000, these “one of each” pledge levels will be worth $210 of exploded vehicle markers. If we make it to the final stretch goal of $3500, it will be worth $258.
Thanks again for your support so far, and if you know of anyone who might be interested in these exploded vehicle markers, please feel free to spread the word.

$2500 Stretch Goal
Space Orc Walker (Category A; 60 to 70 mm diameter)
Space Orc Heavy Weapon Bike (Category A; 2” x 4”)
Space Orc Transport Truck (Category C; 6” x 3.5”)
Space Orc Heavy Transport Wagon (Category C; 6.5” x 4”)

$2750 Stretch Goal
Alien Bug Tunneling Markers (Catergory A for 2; 50mm diameter)
Alien Bug Tunneling Crater (Category B; 4” x 4”)

$3000 Stretch Goal
Technocratic Mecha Federation Skimmer (Category B; 5” x 5”)
Technocratic Mecha Federation Transport Tank (Category C; 6” x 5”)
Chaotic Monster Spider Walker (Category D; 5.5” x 6.5”)

$3500 Stretch Goal
Cyborgs of Anubis Skimmer (Category B; 5” x 2.5” to 4”)
Cyborgs of Anubis Spider Walker (Category B; 4.5” x 4.5”)
Cyborgs of Anubis Transport Ark (Category C; 7.5” x 3”)
Cyborgs of Anubis Pyramid Heavy Transport (Category D; 7” x 6”)

Currently at $2251. Certainly could make that one!

Space Orcs Unlocked, Next Stop - Alien Bugs
Update #6 · Aug 28, 2013 · comment

We're getting close to the end! Thanks to everyone's support, the 4 Space Orc exploded vehicle markers have been unlocked, with wrecks the approximate size and shape of a walker, a heavy weapon bike, a transport truck, and a heavy transport wagon.

If we hit $2750, I'll be able to unlock the two sets of Alien Bug tunneling markers, which should be suitable for marking the tunnels created by the aliens as they burrow through the ground. The larger one would also work well as a generic (albeit disgusting and dangerous) crater. The smaller, 50mm markers will be available for 2 as a Category A wreck, while the larger marker (approximately 4" across) will be a Category B wreck.

Remember, if you've pledged at the Custom Battle Group or higher reward level, you're welcome to add any add-ons you'd like. To do so, just increase your pledge by whatever amount would be needed to cover the additional wrecks. During the post-Kickstarter backer survey, I'll collect the information about what specific wrecks you would like.

Alien Bugs Unlocked; Next Up Mecha and Chaos
Update #7 · Aug 30, 2013 · comment

Less than 24 hours to go, and I think we still might be able to squeeze in one last stretch goal! Thanks to you, hordes of horrible fanged maws will be opening under the feet of unsuspecting guardsmen everywhere. The alien bug tunneling markers have now been unlocked.

Also, a brief word about the delivery dates. At this point, I think it's safe to say that my initial (heavily padded) delivery date of February 2014 is out of the question. I feel confident that I can get these wrecks in your hands by early November at the latest, if not sooner. Thanks for your continued support!

Next up, we've got the two "Technocratic Mecha Federation" (a Mecha Speeder (Category B), and a Mecha Transport Tank (Category C)) and an oversized Chaotic Monster Spider Walker (Category D) wreck. I've got to say, given the rampant success of Tau on the 40k scene lately, nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing a battlefield littered with the exploded remains of Mecha Federation vehicles. Of course, the Chaotic Monster Spider Walker wreck hasn't been modeled yet - the image is just of the expected outline of the wreck.
