Cause its a excuse for a grown man to play with little toys soldiers, and not get sent away for mental health evaluations.

That and all the soccer moms.

I enjoy a night where I can have a few beers hang out with my brother or friends, have a light hearted game that is all about strategy, which I love.

None of the people I play with are WAAC players, which makes me really happy.

- I like Science Fiction
- I used to be a Goth so entropy and death were of some interest.
So 40k with the "grim-dark" worked.

- I liked putting together models.
-I used to compete playing chess.
40k is both so much more fun.

-I was interested in the Templars.
-I was trying to learn latin for fun.
40k had both these things (kinda).

Finally: Any game that can convincingly get Orks into space just has to be experienced.

<<edit>> that said, the game is sufficiently batty that I get alone time working on the hobby because the wife is never quite sure I would not go postal if bugged.

The painting, modelling, and building armies based on fluff is great fun. The gaming is also entertaining, be it with friends or at the local club. Basically, a social activity with the development of skills thrown in (which is the basis of many sports, now that I think about it ).

Chess for men. And awesome women, too. An excellent intellectual exercise, unmatched by anything I have played (that's enjoyable.) However, Hearts of Iron and DCS may be on par...

But also, it has to be the most singularly epic universe ever. It is truly amazing. The discussions you can have are endless. The games are awesome. Dawn of War let me try this.

I hate painting and assembling things. Art has been my bane, and one for which I never really cared about. But 40k is AWESOME. I have grown to enjoy sitting at my desk, simply painting away or (trying) to sculpt that damn green stuff drakescale mantle...

Oh, and for the Salamanders.

By bolter and honour, by blood and fire, we shall cleanse this galaxy. By Vulkan, and by the Emperor, CHARGE!

Yo Dawgs, I heard you like grimdark, so I put grimdark in yo grimdark in yo grimdark in yo universe that is obviously grimdark.

I was first introduced to 40k via Dawn of War (the original one) years ago. I played it and loved everything about it. I then met a guy, became great friends with him and he showed me the tabletop aspect of it.
At 1st I was put off of the game, because I had never painted little miniatures before.
I then started reading the books, which honestly, propelled my love for the universe and game exponentially.
I began getting better at painting the models and found it relaxing to paint.
Now, I love painting them, showing off the work I put into modeling/painting, and of course, going on a battlefield and making war with someone else and having a good time.

Excellent question.

If I had to pick one reason I would have to say: for those moments when it just creases everyone up with laughter e.g. one guy improbably slaughters multiple squads, pie plate lands on my own troops, warlord chased off the board by a grott, ect.

I play 40k because , tbh, fantasy is too expensive for my current financials (but has a growing player base locally so i may just suck it up)

40k, it's like chess for men.

I play 40k (and fantasy) because i like the models and the fluff, and for years i played other games competitively as well as did some game design.

I burnt out, and just wanted a game that had great models to paint, was fun to play, and wasn't 24/7 bidniss of the serious variety.

All the competition (i'm talking serious competitiveness, not just locally, but nationally) was cool for a while, but eventually it took its toll and sapped the fun out of playing. From the other end of the candle, the design aspect was also getting harder and harder to deal with for many reasons.

After a few years of both, i was ready for my hobby to be fun again, and not resemble something so close to work. Burnt out, quit the competitive scene and very quickly thereafter stopped designing too.

Picked up Warhammer fantasy as a beer and pretzel game after about a year's break from minis, and played that exclusively for a couple years. I had read about 6th ed, and liked what i had seen.

My close friends and I had played 40k in the 2nd and 3rd ed days, and i had a very brief stint with 4th ed (like, a game or two). I convinced my game group to try 40k.

I play b/c I enjoy smashing people with stuff that is considered weak. I asked which army was considered weak and got the answer Tyranids so I played tryanids and tabled people. Then in 6th they said without the flyrant I couldn't win and people said Harpies were unplayable now they fear them!

I was trying out Conversion beamers and my friend said, "What in heck are you doing no one uses those move on." so I made a 4 Beamer army w/ 2 Purg Squads and Coteaz and the other Inq. that just wrecks stuff. Esp in a non dawn of war deployment.

They said Nercons w/ no flyers or wraiths doesn't win so I made a Ghost Arc necron army they thought they were gonna stomp and owned em.

For some strange reason everyone here thought the Fortress of Redemption was weak. Now they call it pay to win. I had to remind them they thought it was weak.

I like to win and prove people wrong. It is funny I field a new unit that people don't normally field and everyone looks at the unit and says ok what we miss?

Well, I love anything competitive, and especially when it involves me. So, I'm a huge fan of sports, and a variety of games including chess, checkers, Stratego etc. Plus, as a Kid I loved my Legos and making armies and such.

Basically, Warhammer turned out to be a great combination of me loving to play games, building things, and my love for Sci-Fi action movies. Plus, it ended up making me a little more creative as I was forced to paint my models.

Before warhammer 40000, the vampire counts were my main race and i only playes fantasy. But then one of my friends who played imperial guard told me what all you can do in 40000. After that i read about it and realised that warhammer 4000.0 is a dark time and a great war for survival.

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

I almost thought you were talking about 40k's competition scene for a moment, heh. I'm curious to know more - what sort of game design did you give up? What exactly did you work on?

Also I'm curious if anyone out there (especially including those that get into the competition) play for the tournaments? If so, do you care at all about the national tournaments GW hosts? I used to build up my army when I was younger with all that stuff in mind, but is it worth it anymore to any of you? (Is there even still a national tournament scene anymore every year or two?)

It isn't "fluff" - it's lore.

I love painting the models--that's what attracted me in the first place. I can spend a solid week or so painting a Dreadnought and when its done and looks really nice I love the feeling of satisfaction and getting to show off my hard work to other players. I also really like the social aspect of it. Great hobby all around I'd say.
