Well, the new Dex drops in a few weeks (2.5 by my count) so we should be able to wait a few days and see if GW clarrified things better.
The Lucius pod rules also changed with last weeks Apoc release (40K approved) and it was pretty significant in how it is played and the effect the doors have:
The turn the Pod lands the vehicle becomes open topped (no change).
Due to the dust/dirt kicked up by the retros, the Pod gains shrouding. (new)
Shrouding extends to the area the open doors cover. (new)
Units behind the pod's LoS benefit from shrouding (pardon me while I mask my advancing units with a wall of Pods).
The embarked Drednought DOES NOT deploy the turn it lands (yeah...no riptide/missile-side Tau intercepting my dred...all they get to shoot is an AV12 shrouded vehicle).
NOTE: This is different from current rules where you must immediately disembark from the Pod.
The next turn the Dred MUST disembark but can still assault since the Pod kept the Assault vehicle rule.
It will be interesting to see if the new dex plays normal Pods the same way.
Stay tuned.

It won't. The only changes I see as at all likely are dropping them pack to capacity 10 and (very, very remotely possibly) clarifying the doors situation... although given all the other multiple-edition problems that they haven't bothered clarifying in the 6th edition rules, I'm not really holding my breath for that one.

I agree that it's not likely to change much, if at all, if the Dark Angels Codex is anything to go by.

What happens if the bolts are blown but the doors are stuck due to ice buildup from the drop? (In other words "Hatches are blown" is fluff and does not pertain to any given rule).
I still don't agree with models exiting through an access point that's within 2" of an enemy model though...
Why, is it illegal to be 2 inches from an enemy model?
Since when does ice build up on a vehicle falling from orbit? And if there is less than 2" between a vehicle access point and an enemy model, then there isn't enough room to place a model(on a 1" base) without it being within 1" of an enemy model, thus breaking the rules...
1) The ice buildup happens when the Pod enters the Atmosphere.
2) Less than 2 inches is illegal, 2 inches or more is legal
1) Things get hotter when they enter the atmosphere, not colder.
2)1.9" minus 1" is less than 1".

2) Yes, you are now just agreeing with DR, who said LESS THAN 2" (such as...1.9") is illegal.
Also models do not have a 1" base, it is just under that. Given peopel are being pedantic while simultaneously ignoring the "hatches are blown" has no relevance to a game of plastic models at all.

1) I'm responding to what he's saying, which makes it relevant.
2) He was disagreeing with me, and I was presenting information to clarify my point.
Also, GW small round bases are 1" diameter, and always have been...

Have you nothing better to do than Troll this thread?
PS, you go measure a base, as unlike you, I have, and it's not 25mm...

Crap, I messed up the quote
Thank you for beating me to the atmosphere thing. BUT ON TOPIC
As to the conversation at had. I've also discussed this with my opponents and I think that the door is part of the hull since someone earlier stated that it does make up about 45% of it . But thinking about if it would happen it real life the doors would just slam onto what ever is in it's way.

Has anyone actually measured the bases? The 25mm "heroic" scale that GW frequently mentions is NOT a reference to base size (or at least if it is, it's by accident). It's a reference to the scale of the model overall, ie. what its proportions would be if an average human were scaled down to be 25mm high.

Citadel Miniatures haven't been 25mm scale since before Rogue Trader. Back when they were still mentioned as being any particular size (which I haven't seen happen for some years now), GW toted them as 'Heroic 28mm'
25mm bases are called 25mm bases because they are 25mm in diameter.

You do realize that 1" is 25mm right? (25.4 to be exact)
The models are supposed to be 28mm scale.

I love this. I have this add-on for chrome (Dictionary of Numbers) that gives comparable measurements for text, i.e. "100 kilometers [≈ width of the Bering Strait]" so every time someone types 25mm, it adds [≈ 1 inch] afterwards.
So in my case I'm reading : You do realize that 1" is 25mm [≈ 1 inch] right? (25.4 to be exact)

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Remember: The rules were not written to be "Modern day real world" logical.
The rules are an abstract system used to simulate a battle in the year 40,000.
What would happen in the modern day real world has nothing to do with the RAW, or the simulation of a battle fought 38,000 years from now.
As such they need to have some compromises to make the game playable.

Speak for yourself: I didn't learn this from DR. I actually thought this was common knowledge.
So what I learned from this thread is that some people don't know about ice buildup on atmospheric re-entry! Oh, and I'm also STILL learning how some people refuse to graciously accept common scientific curiosities, like ice buildup on atmospheric re-entry!

I've measured them several times over the years , because this is a discussion that comes up sooner or later every edition, and GW has been through at least a dozen different toolings of the 25mm. No idea where you get the idea that they were 'designed to be 1"' as so far as I'm aware GW has never made any such claim. The 25mm base is called a 25mm base because it is 25mm. Yes, that fits in with the rest of the base range, which is also done in metric measurement. That should have been your first clue that you might have been mistaken on the one inch thing, really...

Thanks Insaniak - I meant to measure one myself after your last post, realising how silly I was being, and then promptly forgot to.
Regarding the ice buildup re-entry thing - it *doesn't actually matter*. It would have no bearing on the rules either way.
