RT rules, on a roughly 6'x6' square on my bedroom floor.
Books as hills, and stuff like erasers as walls.
Back before codices or proper army lists, it was unrestricted, but WYSIWYG.
So, a handful of Space Marines and Eldar against Zoats, the one type of Tyranid, Chaos, etc.
Our games like this were multiplayer dos, that took a few days. Not that there were many models in play, but I was the oldest, at 13, and we spent ages working out the rules.

2nd edition, me versus my brother in a GW store demo game (i would have been about 7 at the time).
I had a tactical squad, he had some orks and gretchin.
I won because the GW staffer told me to throw a grenade at the orks and it killed some. I really had no idea how to play at that point...

Defending Guardian Defender

2nd edition, not even codices. We played on the floor, pooled almost all minis we had, so I had a jumbled mass of imperial forces versus a huge amount of basic box orks, I played the old sicarius looking Marine Captain as Arbites hero is all I remember.
I recently played a game, that comes as close to a second first game as possible. It was my first game in 10 years and a friends first game of 40k afaik.
600pts my Eldar (new dex) vs Marines.
Eldar
Farseer
Guardians with lance and warlock
rangers
scorpions
reapers
Marines
Captain (Artificier Armor, jump pack)
5 Assault Marines
2 tactical squads
1 Rhino
First turn, first action. My warlock blows up his head. I curse that none of my telepathy maledictions is in range. My guided reapers hit with every rocked but the captain catches every shot like superman himself. Rangers do nothing ,but loitering. At least I stun the rhino.
Only the assaults move forward, but fail to charge the scorpion. Shuriken pistol bladestorm kills one marine and takes a wound of the captain. The next turn sees the assault whiped out. Spectacularly, the captain dies to more Scorpion pistols. And I really wanted to see the claw in action :(. The rangers are propably swaping contrabant and anoy the reapers with smug remarks, because they sure as hell ain't killing anyone.
The rest of the game, eldar and marines trade a few shots with casualties here and there, with three esceptions:
-My guardians almost run of the board, dragging along the farseer, who screams something like "Carry me closer, so I can hit him with my mind bullets!"
-The rangers are still styling their rebel hairdos and talking about awesome leather jackets, because killing supersoldiers is for conformist loosers.
-The man of the match, the rhino (lovingly called "dozy", for his dozerblades) rushes straight into my lines, the clash playing "death or glory" in the background. The scorpion exarch gets death, a nameless guardian on the lance gets glory. Turns out strength 6 does not reliably penetrate rhino front armour^^
Man, that was a slow game and we got a lot wrong. But the fun, it was great, yes.

It was still fun, but kid me couldn't really fully appreciate the hobby, tbh.
Bad decision mate, I wouldn't go into assault with my orks as I found the assaulting rules too complex...using slugga boyz to shoot chaos marines didn't really work

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

2nd Edition, my Tyranids vs Space Wolves
My Nids mainly consisted of Space Hulk Stealers, A Hive Tyrant, and the ugliest models GW has ever put out... the original Tyranid Warriors(I remember I also had 2 Lictors, loved those models)
Guy I played was an @$$
Back then Space Wolf Terminators could outfit 2 out of 5 Termies with Assault Cannons(they were godly in 2nd) and all of them with Storm Shields. Like they really needed them! Back then Termies had a 3+ armour save on 2d6. He basically set up the board with no terrain, sat on the 12" line and mowed me down while I attempted to get across the board. I never made it.
I think I was only 17 at the time.

Mine was in 5th, I brought Space Wolves against Dark Angels, my list was roughly:
Ragnar Blackmane
Canis Wolfborn
10 Grey Hunters
10 Blood Claws
5 Wolf Guard Terminators, Assault Cannon
3Thunderwolves
Long Fangs, Lascannon, HB, MM, PC, ML.
Land Raider Redeemer, every upgrade
Tri-Las Predator, every upgrade.
As you can all see, this is obviously the best list anyone has ever fielded, I can hardly imagine how my opponent beat me. I did table his Raven Guard in the next match though, so all was well in the end!

In 5th ed. My brother and I had bought some random assortment of models. I the necrons, he the eldar. I had a 3rd ed. codex, 12 Warriors, 3 Scarab Swarms, and 1 Immortal. He had no codex, A war walker, 14 Guardians, 1 Harlequin Deathjester, 6 Striking Scorpions. Such glorious battles were fought... using only tutorial videos on the internet as a basis for how we played the game.

Very early in my 40k career, I charged a dread with a big unit of boyz with the thought I could tarpit it it. Which is really not a bad idea.
But it was a Death Company dread, with blood talons, which reduced my boyz to a fine green mist.
And so began my rivalry with Blood Angels. (It's so sad to see them so down this edition...)

Mine was in the fourth edition. Played with my cousin's armies - he was tyranids, I was black Templars. I basically spent the entire match trying to shoot him down before he reached my lines. It didn't work and I got spectacularly mauled. I loved it though!

The days of Rogue Trader had all 6 of our forces completely different from one another. It was a free for all match, played out on a friends living room floor. We used Christmas garland, ornaments, and Gingerbread houses for terrain.
We each had about a squads worth of minis. 2 Players had SPACE MIRINES, 1 Eldar, 1 Imperial GuarD, 1Ork and myself with my Squats. I won with the conversion beamer blowing holes and clearing out the terrain. Good times!

My first game was my marines (10 of them, I think) against a mate's orks (around 24-25 of them). The orks massacred me. This was RT days.
It was at a games club, so we used their terrain.
The next game was a few months later, with my eldar v his orks. No ork survived that one.

It was right after 5th edition necrons came out, and I had started collecting models, but never played the game under the 3rd, it was 500 points.
He ran Khorne CSM...Zerkers and a flying demon prince vs my Overlord, maybe 20 warriors and 2 destroyers.
Got rolfstomped hard haha, but it was a learning experience.
