Can anyone remember their first game of 40k? What did you bring and how noobish was your army?

I remember when I played my first game with the orks. No codex, no weapons over the strengh of 5 and playing against an army of CSM. The best weapon I had was the big shoota on the trukk and I thought it was the best thing I could get. (This was before I discovered the game sworkshop website and dakka dakka.)

Did anyone else have any experiences like this?

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

Mine was a 5th game against with CSM against Black Templars. 750 pts I believe.
I had a ccw squad of ten with my lord, a 10 man squad with a melta and a five man plasma gun squad. I killed his dread ought, razorback and everything else except his chaplain who made all his saves and tabled me in hth :(

Close game though although both of us forgot that running distance is a d6 and not 6 inches ^^

First game was my mostly proxied Tyranids against mostly proxied Tau and Ultramarines. The game was amazing, Zoanthropes popping land raiders and genestealers slaughtering marines... until all that was left was Calgar, standing atop a mountain of various bodies, with only one wound left. It was glorious, even though I lost.

It took over four hours, too.

First game for me was early 4th edition with my necrons against my friends berserker CSM list.

I think it was something like:

1x necron lord
24x necron warriors
1x tomb spyder

vs

1x CSM lord
24x berserkers

I killed around 8 berserkers and then CC happened. I lost 3 warriors for every berserker I killed, but my tomb spyder actually managed to kill a few before he died.

I ended up losing, but the game had zero strategy - we pretty much just rushed each other with minimal terrain.

My first game was 5th Edition, ,my CSM vs Orks. I had a very limited army, just a couple of squads of Chaos Marines and a Terminator Lord. They received a very rude awakening to the world of 40k...

My first game was waaaaay back in 3rd, me and my brother just got the starting box, so being the older brother I called space marines and forced him to play dark eldar.

It was a slaughter, the forces inside were so imbalanced.

First game EVER was 2nd Ed. Me as Space Orks and my mate as Blood Angels. We were fooish and didn't really understand the rules and the game went for about 6 hours until we got bored.

This year I got back into actually playing the game and was utterly smashed by a guy playing Necrons. My Nids only got to shoot once. I killed 3 necron warriors but they were resurrected. Utter fail but it was fun! I lasted, maybe 3 or so turns before we called it. I didn't know my stuff real well and he was a seasoned player who's brother played Nids. He didn't hold anything back but it was still fun.

Get your models on the table and looking good!

Technically first game was 5 or so years ago when i was still in techschool and freshly in the US military (airforce specifically). But we had no BRB so we were playing off memory, and looking back we didnt do anything right.

I never found a group until i came to Korea last year, so i didnt play until about November last year. Now, new edition, every thing i knew (which was almost nothing) went out the window lol.

Orks vs BA. 750pt game. I ran a trukk list and i remember going around these long ADLs in the middle of the board thinking i couldnt even go over them despite having a ram lol. 4 turns, i killed 1 marine and he tabled me rofl. Most eventless game ever lol

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

2nd Edition Orks vs Space Marines.

We had no clue what we were doing really, we got the basic stuff about measuring and dice rolling but most of it we ignored. We didn't play on a board but the floor, scenery was teddy bears, books and what other stuff we could get our hands on.

We didn't really know how to follow a codex correctly so stuff got pretty funky. Was a lot of fun.

My first game was the 2nd ed box.

I had twenty orks and 40 gretchin vs the might of the Blood Angels...
Somehow, the game came down to a firing squad of all 40 gretchin vs 1 space marine...

A little while later I found Eldar and never went back.

My first two games were the AOBR marines(+10 IG) vs the old CSM battleforce, I won but I'm not sure how.

Second games was AOBR orks vs the same, and again I won, with one nob surviving 5 rounds against a berserker squad, my warboss tearing up 2 squads of CSM and the deffkoptas flying round shooting up everything. The best moment, though, was probably the chaos bikers trying to jump a gap between 2 hills. 1 died to dangerous terrain, and the other two were an inch short for charging, and got rapid-fired to death by the guardsmen the next turn.

1750 points, my Black Templars vs Dark Eldar last September. I basically ended up tabling the guy somehow, while having a large portion of my army intact. He was relatively new too, but had at least a few matches under his belt, don't know how many.

My list certainly wasn't competitive or anything, as at the time I had little in the way of heavy support for example.

Also what's funny is that despite his lists not changing all that much, I haven't won a 1vs1 against that guy since. In fact pretty much all but one match since I've lost by being tabled or nearly enough so. That one match - actually the most recent one we've had - literally came down to a single die roll that caused me to lose it.

My first game was in 3.5. My friend helped me paint up a small Deathwing army to tabletop quality and I wanted to play with them. He only plays orks and I had no idea what to expect. Found out choppas made my 2+ into a 4+ That was a quick first game.

Rogue Trader, believe it or not, with my Dark Angel Space Marines and my friend's Space Wolves vs my other friend's Chaos force, including a Blood Thirster. We had no idea sitting down to play how powerful that guy was going to be and we didnt have anything to stop him. So the game ended in frustration since he refused to play without him.

When 40k 2nd Ed came along, my first game was my Eldar vs my friend's Space Marines. First move of the game: His Chaplin advances and hits my Dreadnought with a Haywire Grenade, causing it to turn 90 degrees, march through my squad of Dire Avengers, killing 3 of 5 and breaking them, then falling down and blowing up, taking out my nearby Warlock. It was a small game, and that single move, destroyed most of my army. I immediately surrendered and we restarted a new game lol. Quickest loss in history I am sure.

It was... 4th, I believe? Not entirely sure, Im was just a kid. But it was me with my IG alongside my friend and his Marines vs some Tyranids. I basically shot some 'Nids and then made the genius decision to have my guardsmen enter assault him some hormagaunts, which got them all killed.

It was still fun, but kid me couldn't really fully appreciate the hobby, tbh.

Old Tau codex, beginning of 6th edition. I went to a tournament (horrible idea) and the first game I played in my life went down something like this.

Old Tau vs IG. I had a lot of suits and kroot, he ran 9 basilisks and 2 vendettas, skeleton crew of vets. I set up behind cover, not area terrain though. Mostly just walls and houses.

Turn 3 tabled me, I couldn't take the barrage of artillery...

My first game of 40k ever was in 2nd edition, I was a kid, and I had some Blood Angels Assault Terminators. They charged a tank and killed it.

I played a few games with other folks' toys in the interim, but my first game with my own models was in 4th. It was a big 3v3 where I just kind of sat back and plinked away at a Land Raider with a lascannon for 5 turns and didn't accomplish anything. I had a captain with a chainsword, bionics, and stormbolter, and he walked around with an expensive command squad that didn't do anything.

My first game ever was just as 6th came out. I played 1250 pts of marines against an army of Orks. My opponents burna wagon took out one squad of marines straight away. Another squad of marines was take out by a nob mob exiting a truck and assaulting. A squadron of deffcoptas arriving from reserve blasted my rhino off the table and the 5 marines inside. The game was basically called after I had nothing but a set of 5 terminators left on the table. I made 1 squad of his loota break and leave the table and tied up a tank busta squad for 3 turns with my scouts. Pretty hardy beating.

I thought when I set up the game it would be more of a learn how to play session, but there was not much teaching going on. He had all vehicles and I really had nothing to take them out. Just one lonely missle launcher guy who got toasted by the burna wagon. My opponent was a borderline TFG, not a great first experience.

Next couple of games (against other opponents more willing to teach) went a little better.

Not counting playing through the scenarios in the Battle for Maccrage (I never know how to spell that word), my first game was my Eldar against my step-brother's Necrons. I don't remember much, except that we didn't do an even amount of points so he had way more than me and that my Wave Serpent got destroyed and my Dire Avengers got locked in combat with a C'tan and couldn't harm it. Yeah, that's all I remember.

first game of 40k was with a guy i knew in college that I wound up playing more often than anybody else. The game was about as simple as you can get, with both sides only having two troop choices and one HQ. He used Tau, I used black templars.

I don't remember the points that we did, it was probably very low, but basically I got completely demolished as he used jetpacks on stealth suits to jump up, take shots at me, and then jump back after his shooting phase.

The guy was a well known cheater and to this day I still strongly question just about every game that I ever played with him.

My first game was 750 points of the old Tyranid battleforce, consisting of eight hormagaunts, eight termagants, three warriors and a carnifex named Bill that I maxed out with everything I could put on him. I played against Thousand Sons, he had Ahriman or a chaos sorcerer, 2 squads of ten 1k sons and a trigger happy dreadnought. That was 2009 but I remember it so well.
I literally got into Tyranids before I knew that there was a new codex coming out the next month so it was one of my few games with a great 4th edition codex. HQ warriors with eternal warrior was so awesome. I won the game, which was surprising, although it was handy having an MC on the board with regenerate, enhanced senses, tusked, and every other biomorph under the sun on him.

I had a couple of early unsuccessful games vs a player that was as inexperienced as me... So many mistakes I don't count it!

My first full game against someone older than 13 was when I signed up for an RTT in march of 2009, with my bend new Nids book. I s good at chess, so figured I could win a few games.

First round, an Eldar player took my hodge lodge list apart. I lost 2 to 1 after my Flyrant got killed by 5 rangers turn 1 Round 2 I lost agin to a chaos player despite Dethleper best efforts. Finally round 3, I beat a Necron army with my mismatch of units. Th guy s. bit sad with how bad that book was. In my defense, I Ed a young and foolish teen at the time.

My first game. Me and a buddy each bought an AoBR starter. I got the Marines, He got all the orks. I got a caplian on a bike, cause he looked cool and he got a unit of Lootas. We, well I read the rule book, sorta. We set up the kitchen table with books, cans, what ever we thought looked cool. 4 hours later, I had defeated the Orks in the first ever Battle for Brownsville.

Looking back, I am so glad there wasnt anyone who knew what they were doing watching. They would have run away crying or died laughing at how bad we were.

Close combat? Sure, umm.....4's to hit. 5 to wound Space Marines, 4s to wound Orks. 2 attacks for the marines, 3 for the orks. WAAAAAGHH meant you get an extra round of close combat...oh and extra charge range..and it could be called twice a game.

Its a game, have fun. If you arent for some reason...find a new one.

First game was a 2v2 my Orks & Eldar against 2 x Guard in fifth.

I had what was in the Black Reach starter set + some extra stuff, about 50+ models in my army alone marching up the middle of the field. They just couldn't kill them all by the time I got to there lines, mY Warboss ate two tanks along the way. Game still ended in a tie though but was still a good first game.

My first was against my twin brother back in Rogue Trader days. Our older brother bought the book and a bunch of random figures from some friend. It was a bunch of assorted Marines, no two looked alike, and some Eldar. We threw in some Battle Tech figs to act as battle robots because...why not.
When Chaos came into being, I delved into chaos and my twin went down the Eldar path and we both sometimes played the Marines. Rogue Trader rules. Wow. Thems was the days.
We had some of these guys...

Some of these guys....

And them.
