Ships I want to see that actually have a chance of existing:
1) Assault gunboat. This gives the imperials a heavier "x-wing" style fighter that they don't really have right now.
2) Z-95. Similarly this gives the rebels a cheaper "TIE fighter" equivalent.
3) Marauder corvette. Imperial capital ship, it's the right size and IMO looks awesome.
Ships I don't want to see:
1) TIE defender. See below.
2) Missile boat. Same problem as the TIE defender, with the added problem that a missile spam ship doesn't translate very well when missiles are 4-5 points per shot.
3) Random bounty hunter ships that were never seen in the movies and don't even have much EU history. We already have a bounty hunter ship, and I don't see a meaningful role for more of them to fill. It would just be Slave 1 with a different model that few people would even recognize.
4) Any late- EU or prequel garbage. I am very happy with this remaining a rebellion-era game and not going off into the awful fanfiction and cash cow milking.
Boblogik wrote:I think it wouldn't be redundant. Based on what I know of the TIE Defender, it would be more like a shielded interceptor. So 3 3 3 2 maybe. Price jump obviously for those shields. That's my take atleast.
The problem is that if you represent the TIE defender like that it's incredibly boring. You've just made a ship that's the best at everything with no weaknesses, which is fine in a video game where it's one player ship vs. dozens of enemy fighters but doesn't work so well in a two-player game.

Personally, I would love to see official Z-95s and other ships from the X-wing/TIE fighter games (as already mentioned). Fortunately, since I can paint, and care naught for "official" there are ways to satisfy those needs..
And if the game keeps going long enough, it seems like there would be ample room for Episode VII-IX fighters...

I agree on the Missile Boat 100%; even in the TIE Fighter games it was boring to fly because it was so powerful. Toss in how missile spam fails to translate and it's even uglier. It's also not really an iconic Star Wars design but rather just some random ship. You could plunk the model down in Babylon 5 or as a Tau ship and it'd blend in just fine.
The TIE Defender I'm more ambivalent towards. IF they could find a niche for it, which I currently don't see for the reasons outlined by Peregrine, then it'd be an "ok" addition. It at least fits in with the aesthetic, if a bit towards the ridiculous end, and is a video game favorite like the Assault Gunboat. As I said, I don't see how they could really fit in as their own concept, but games designers are typically more creative than me.

Being a HUGE fan of the space combat side of SW and the novels, I can see a bunch of additional ships making their way into the game. Some I'd be most excited about:
Z95s, Preybird-class Starfighters, Skipray Blastboats, TIE Defenders, E-wings, Miy'til Fighters, Defender Starfighters....
...I could go on and on. I really want the expanded universe to meet this game head on.

Looking at the stuff they currently have in Edge of the Empire, I think the Z-95 is a distinct possibility, as is the Skipray Blast Boat, and the Cloakshape Fighter. I'd like to see the YT-2400 as well, as it is one of the EU items that was reintegrated in a cameo shot of Mos Eisley in EpIV's re-release.
I'm abivalent about the TIE Defender, as well as the multiple TIE variants beyond the films. However, I'd be curious if the V-Wing might eventually make an appearance as a predecessor ship for the Empire, as the Z-95 would be for the Rebels...

They basically said they aren't following any of the EU material when it comes to the new movies. This does not invalidate it per se, but it does make it incredibly likely when Episodes 7-9 come out that there will be conflicts between "established canon" and Disney's "new canon."
However, one thing that is highly unlikely to conflict is ship designs. Disney has no objection to making money and having fleshed-out designs that are already popular among fans is pretty easy money in the grand scheme of things. So, while Han Fett-Skywalker (or some other recycled name combination from the EU) might no longer be a major character, there's no reason to throw out the E-Wing or any of the other ready-made ships. Some of the more bizarre stuff from the EU will surely be cut, but anything that could be recognized as a "Star Wars" ship either through repeated appearances in books and games or having the obvious design aesthetics (such as the triangular hull of Imperial ships) is likely safe.
More basically, Disney will cut characters as they see fit, but they won't cut toys because those can be easily sold.

This would make me extremely happy. I know one of the largest gripes I had with the prequels personally was the obvious unwillingness to allow EU starships to seed their way into the movies. There was NO reason Lucas couldn't use Dreadnaughts, Victory-class Star Destroyers, Z-95s, and other EU ships in the movies to some extent. Even a passing glance of some of the EU ships would have made me extremely excited. So I really hope Disney pulls at least SOME of the EU canon into their movies...more than Lucas' acceptance of only a single planet name.

I wholly expect Thrawn and Pellaeon to get written out of existance; they're simply too awesome to endure.
As for the ships, I think Krinsath is right on the money; regardless of whether or not the new heads of the operation like any of the EU materiel, as Lucas said back in the day he'd do Thrawn's arc were he to ever do any more movies, they no doubt want to blaze entirely their own story, Abrams at the helm makes that even more likely, given his precedent.
The designs, however, can easily be integrated, as others have already done the hard work of thinking of advancements of movie-era technology further afield.
Kind of puts the X-Wing game in a tight spot however; they've basically finished all the film ships, the EU is the only way to add more ships, but the EU will likely cease to exist when Disney finalizes Ep. 7, so while some designs may endure, some may not, and FFG can't be certain any designs will persist. The HWK was relatively safe; no matter what, Dark Forces and the Jedi Knight games had a following, and they could bank on that, as they no doubt can on ships from the X-Wing and Tie Fighter games, but past that, things become nebulous mighty quick.
|
Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Alternatively you just end up with a continuity mess just like a lot of other universes where everything is still published and no attempt is made to keep consistency between the "old" EU and the new movies. And even if that's not the case any ignoring of the EU would be about large-scale plot issues, not nitpicking whether or not a specific fighter still "exists" anymore and can be included in a game.

I was under the impression that Disney stated they would be loyal to the EU? That Lucasfilm's properties would remain intact and in the hands of whoever is running it, etc. and thus things like the Holocron (which tracks the continuity of everything remotely official relating to Star Wars) wouldn't fall by the wayside.

Personally, I think that this is a very bad idea.
GW got to do this with their Lord of the Rings license. Ultimately, they created Dwellers as well as some messed up Isengard Units (feral Uruks) and their own version of Harad.

Even in this time period there is room to expand. The Hapes Cluster still exists, the Chiss are out there, the Hutt Consortium are just three off the top of my head.
As for fighters- TIE Defenders, those Gunboats that are better armed than the shuttle in wave 3. The Rebels have E-Wings still. As far as general fighters, Headhunter fighters, Uglies, and there are numerous lesser known fighters, like the Naboo starfighter(which still exists).
There are quite a few smaller capital ships(although all I can think of are Imperial off hand) Interdictor cruisers, Victory Star Destroyers, Galleon transports, Lancer Frigates(whose entire purpose in life is to destroy starfigthers). These are all smaller scale capital ships in similar size or only slightly larger than the Corellian Corvette.

There are two questions here: which ships exist, and which ships have interesting design space to use. For example, the Z-95 has interesting potential as a cheap rebel ship, something they currently lack. An assault gunboat could give the imperials an "X-wing", a balanced mid-points ship with more upgrade options than the TIE advanced. But what do you do with, say, a Naboo fighter? Fluff-wise it would be the equivalent of the Z-95: a borderline-obsolete leftover of the previous era that only sees use in modern fleets because of its low cost. But the design space of "cheap rebel ship" is already occupied by the Z-95 (a much more appealing ship to add), and if you start adding multiple cheap rebel ships the factions blend together too much. So the Naboo fighter is redundant, and the only reason to make it would be to sell another model.
So far FFG have avoided the redundancy problem and ensured that each ship has its own design space to occupy and a legitimate purpose in the game. I'd like to keep it that way, even if it means leaving out some of the obscure ships that only the most dedicated fans have ever heard of.

The assault gunboat whose name I still cant remember was a two or three seat ship and lacked the manueverability of a true fighter, but had far bigger weapons, but was still smaller than a tramp freighter like the Falcon.
My issue is while I like Boba Fett and Slave 1, its a very rare and obsolete class of ship(his is very souped up). Its one of those if you see more than one or two in a lifetime of working at a busy spaceport you are beating the odds. Hopefully the new option of a Lambda Shuttle will reduce the numbers of them on the field, (even though its a shuttle not a combat ship)

I'd love to see a Skipray appear as a dual-faction ship (it has been used by both Imperials, and Rebels "Allies"- I think within the space of the same book). Size-wise, Wokiepedia lists it as being between the Falcon and Lambda in length, so I guess it would be a large ship. In terms of Gameplay, going off of the same sites description, I guess it would have access to 2 crew upgrades, a cannon, and maybe both missiles and torpedoes, as well as a Turret Primary. I'd hope it would give both sides access to a generic tanky gunship.
