If a service animal is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it? It's not fulfilling its role as a service animal.
Again, I don't agree with Ireland being abusive to the guy but if the dog is acting up then the ADA provisions for service animals do not apply.
Ah, I missed Mannahnin's post. My apologies!
No need to apologize. I'm trying to find corroboration of that but have not found any just yet.

Speaking of violent histories, how does the law handle that? Do service animals need to be removed on a case by case, or can you use a history of trouble to deny access?
Or is that what we're all trying to discuss

One could assume that a service animal with a "violent history" would not be a service animal for very long.

Makes perfect sense!

I mean when discussing things like that, remember that the animals have to undergo training by a recognized organization beforehand and the animals are essentially 'on loan' to the owners from the organization (from my understanding on the matter at least).
If the animal starts acting up or it becomes clear that the owner is not handling the animal properly, I would assume that the organization will remove the animal from the owner.

Out of context this sentence made me smile a little bit: "How much emotional support do you need when you are eating breakfast?”
However, in relation to the story - the restaurant owner needs a penalty of some sort place against him. With all the research that has been done in recent years... PTSD is a real thing and can be triggered during the most mundane of activities.
What if one of his buddies whom he enjoyed eating breakfast with was killed -> you bet your a** you need emotional support while eating breakfast.

notprop wrote:Excuse my ignorance by why is a type of card so important in the US? Is this purely a proof of age thing for drinks?
Actually, at this store it was for tobacco. In this case, the state is the one issuing fines (and closing down your business) if we failed to card correctly, so our store was only willing to accept IDs that the state itself had issued. (Or apparently other states, provided that we could verify it with a little book they gave us on anti-counterfeiting measures on the various state IDs.) I was actually really, really surprised by the number of people who tried to use IDs that were obviously fake, stolen, not theirs, expired, or illegitimate. The one I felt bad about is tickets. Most of the time a cop who takes your ID in a traffic stop will tell you that the ticket will serve as your ID until you get it back in court. Unfortunately, that's no the case when a photo ID is required. (Since the ticket does not, obviously, have your photo.) There were some really irate customers over that particular policy.
But back on topic, I think the issue here is just exactly how far out of line the dog was acting. We don't know if it was something bad enough where the owner would have had legitimate reason to ask him to leave, or if he was just being a tool. Speaking from personal experience, people are all too willing to game the system on this. (I have a relative who had his dog classed as a therapy animal for precisely this reason: to bring it into dining establishments.) It's impossible to tell from the info we have if that's the case here or not, but it's always a possibility. While there are many people suffering from PTSD and other related conditions in this country, completely in need of any kind of aid to be able to live a normal life, there are also large numbers of people who would jump at the opportunity to claim special status in order to get their own way.

Well done, you.
People with disabilities or mental disorders are just like all the other people. That includes the ability to be tools, wieners, and moochers. (Not throwing rocks at this guy in particular.) And there's no dearth of people willing to game the system to get special status. (I'll be honest, if I could get my hands on a handicap sticker, I'd use it.)
