I play IG, and have a Catachan army. To me, fluff wise, the lend them selves to be mech vets, or, veteran squad sort of army. Small unit, specialized in certain type of weapons or combat.

the look of the plastic range, outside of the Catachan command box, sucks. No other way to phrase it. The infantry squad box is horrible. I have my entire army out of the old metal, last chancers, tanith, and some necromunda models. The older metal line has some great models and some bad ones too, looking at you heavy flamers. Also, the older metal only gives you one pose for the special weapons.

I think it is a combo of fluff and visual for the catachans.

I've seen one other Catachan player here aside from myself. I love ther fulff myself and I really have no problem with the models either. The newer ones (command squad box) do look much better though. Other people don't really like them. One guy I know buys a box every now and then for conversion purposes to add variation to his Cadians.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

It's probably becuase they have much worse miniatures than cadians for no in-game benefit.

I had a small Catachan army as I really liked some of the metal minis but the plastic models I didn't care for so much (almost as ugly as the plastic Space Marine scouts). I did use the plastics to make a pretty decent Duke Nukem with the storm bolter of the Land Raider kit and a nice bolt pistol to echo the Duke Nukem 3D cover art, obviously the Catachan head with sunglasses/goggles was perfect.

What I always wanted to do was make some Vietnamese Catachans. Perhaps one day...

Catachans look hideous. It's bad enough with the normal Cadians (seriously, heroic scale does bad things to basic humans ) but Catachans are imo amongst the worst sculpts still offered by GW.

I collected Catachans when their 'new' codex was first released, and steroids aside I had no problem with the models or the fluff.

However the biggest issue to my mind is their fluff and aesthetic is very region-centric.
The jungle fighters look quite out of place on most battlefields.
Also, an army that comes from a planet that struggles to maintain roads and basic infrastructure, looks very out of place fielding armoured units. (Which guard rely on quite a lot.)

For these reasons I guess most players who want to pick up guard would rather play the more generalized cadians. Also, they have had the most attention in recent years.
