Several points my superior intellect has picked up on. -During E3 microsoft were still using PCs for Demos, playstation were using Dev-kits. Suggesting the architecture was not stable/finalised. -The PS4 has been in the works since '08, in a form that closely resembles what it is now. Mark Cerny, the system Architect, has also managed it's development since it's gestation, which was in his brain lol. -Mark Cerny was also the system Architect for the Vita which, say what you want about it's sales etc, has few if any commonly reported hardware issues (Had, non-widespread, firmware issues due to it's rushed release in Japan and suffers from a few problems with it's, revolutionary, OLED technology, which are shared by all OLEDs). -The Xbox one is bigger, this suggests more 'shop-bought' parts and less development time (this can be confirmed iirc). -The Xbox one still still comes with a gigantic power brick, the Ps4 does not.

OP, I'd suggest a few ways to tackle this.
Wait til post release to see how things go, like if any RROD issues happen again for either console.
I don't see many exclusives to be excited about, and the multi system game selection seems pretty good, so that might be a reason to go the cheaper route (because, well, I get gaming consoles for games, and if both do the same why not take the cheaper route)
Last but not least, yeah just ask them which system/game they want most.

I'd wait till they are both out, and decide based on their game line-ups. There are very few console exclusives nowadays, but those can be the decision makers for some people.

While battlefield has the larger player bass on playstation. As far as other genre's go the devs have done a pretty good job. Of spreading them out on all concoles. I would also suggest seeing if any of their friends are getting a specific console since everybody likes to play with their friends.
One final thought. I would research whats been revealed on both systems and see if you have any strong feelings for or against either. Ultimately what you choose is up to you.
Battlefield does not actually have the "larger player base on the playstation". PC has the largest player base, with 360/PS3 being within spitting distance of each other.
Considering he's asking about console I don't see how pc has anything to do with the conversation. As far as player bases go I was referring to the sales numbers for the related games. Higher pre order for COD on xbox one and higher pre order for battlefield on playstation 4.
Really kan if your spoiling for an argument so much that you have to selectively make one up perhaps you should take a break.

Or you could have made that statement from the get-go rather than the statement you made.
You made the statement that "Call of Duty has the bigger player bass on the xbox while battlefield has the larger player bass on playstation".
What you neglected to mention however is that there very well could be a reason for that, with the fact that COD has had earlier DLC release dates on Xbox and Battlefield had PS3/ PC releases at the same time with Xbox coming later.
Battlefield as of right now has, as far as I am aware, not made a statement about if they are retaining this method but I know that Call of Duty is getting DLC first on Xbox as well.
Things like that are actually motivators for some people who buy in a vacuum or are not established with one console or the other.

Kanluwen, please stop already. Let's stay on topic. No one wants another console war thread, and I'm sure the OP would prefer this thread not get closed by such silliness.

Why not use the money that you would have used for the console for something like musical instruments or sports instead? With the time and energy I've spent playing games since I was a kid, I know now that I would have loved to have had something like a guitar or maybe Tae Kwon Do lessons instead... I mean... How else are your children going to learn to serenade zombies into a sense of calmness so they can axe kick them in the head? I'm just saying...

MEh, if you follow THAT advice, don't expect them to live a life of sports afterwards. The overwhelming majority of people who try to make it in professional sports don't, and then they live disgruntled, unsatisfied lives doing something else instead.

They don't have to go pro... I just know that if given a chance to go through my childhood, teens, and twenties all over again I wouldn't mind having inserted some more musical or physical application into those times. Heck... it doesn't even have to be anything musical or physical (because games contain some aspect of these things... I'm not saying they can't)... I'm just suggesting maybe putting your money into something else other than either videogame console.
OP: Seriously though I would wait... This go around, something seems a bit iffy about either console. Do you have tablets for your kids? I hear those are a hit.

Dunno, if it were up to me, I'd have put less money in axtraneous things like sports or music (I played trumpet and tennis at one point) and put more money aside for college, perhaps in an annuity.

Thanks for all the advice guys.Just to answer a couple of questions that came up;both are into sport, one plays soccer the other badmington, they have an xbox 360 and play COD,Minecraft,FIFA,Deadrising and almost everything else in between so its more mature themes rather than kiddie games and I'm ok with that. Both play alot online, with both pc and xbox games so I guess I'm looking to see which will be the more popular?

I think they may lean Towards the Xbox One due to 'brand loyalty'. The Xbox One Also comes with a copy of Fifa '14 if you buy it the day of launch (You'll have to hide it till Christmas! ). Also 'Dead Rising 3' is a Launch Title so you can get that straight away.
Another thing to consider is that If your sons get a copy of the Latest COD in November for their 360 they can get the xbox One version later down the line for a discounted price. (I think it might be only cost $10 to upgrade).
Pre-Order data suggests that the PS4 will prove the more popular of the two consoles at launch but that may change over the course of the next 6 months. Which is really when we'll see which Machine takes dominance.
