Am thinking of getting either Xbox One or PS4 for my two boys for xmas(12 and 14 years old).Which would you go for??

That's hard to help with this coming gen. Before if you wanted shooters then you went with xbox and if you wanted more rpg then it would be playstation. This gen though there kinda spread. which console do they currently use? what games do they prefer?

Because Playstation had such great RPGs like...?

Persona Series, Demons's Souls, Valkyrie Chronicles, Shin Megima Tenshin, Legend of Mana, Legend of Dragoon, Disgea, Chrono Trigger, La Pucelle Tactics, White Knight Chronicles....

They also had the games that WEREN'T exclusives like Fallout 3/NV, The Mass Effect Series, Dragon Age Origin, X-Men Destiny, and similar.

My two cents - *wait until they're actually out* and check reviews from people that have bought one before you. In previous console previews there has always been a blustering of details, specs and claims that had a number of inaccuracies and red herrings.
That, and only time will tell exactly how intrusive the XBoxOne really is with the Kinect and its "options", and whether the PS4 is as privacy-friendly as it has seemed so far.

I'll be getting the PS4. Microsoft turned me off with the Xbox One crap. Sure they've fixed a lot of it, but the damage was still done in my eyes.

I'll probably wait till spring to get the PS4 though, let that first gen run through and get the newer, less buggy system.

I won't likely be getting it right on release day but I'm going to within the next 2 years or so get the PS4. Now that the Xbox One has pulled a 180 and basically reverted into trying to be like a PS4 alongside all the stuff they tried pulling (which can easily be returned through little additions to their user agreement over time) means there's little to no reason to go for an Xbox One IMO.

Also considering I already have a PS3 I'd rather stick with a company that I'm more familiar with that seems to have learned from their previous mistakes and get access to exclusives I'm actually into like Killzone:Shadowfall and Infamous Second Son.

I have an xbox just for Halo and a few other games that are great for parties and when guest are around such as MW2 but Microsoft put me off Xbox One with its DRM. But even after their backtrack I feel that if I have a console just for Halo then I'll wait for Halo 5 to come around the corner next year.

My bet for you to wait a little while. The Xbox One excusives in my eye look better than the PS4 but then again I have never been one for Playstation. The Xbox will have Halo 5 next year so if you are looking for a shooter that is both fun, good and a little turned down on the language and violence department than go for Xbox One and Halo 5. But both consoles have some great looking opening releaces so if I were you, do some investigating like what do your kids like in a game? what kind of games do they like? Once you have the answer to that decide on what ever has games that lean towards what they what more. Hope this could help a bit.

But after all I prefer the glorious PC master race and the holy Steam Services.

I'm buying an Xbox one. In was ready for the ps4 preorder but then Microsoft showed that they were mobile and made the necessary changes to get my attention again,

Also, most of my friends use Xbox live party chat. Live is the preferred online tool, it's simply better than the ps network

Seriously. If you think Microsoft are the ones who came up with a lot of the DRM ideas by themselves, you clearly don't know who they licensed Orbis from.

I'll go with whichever is cheaper. I'm still hooked on Skyrim so I'll be good for a while longer.

Same here. None of the launch games is a good reason to buy the PS4 at launch, for me at least. I bought the PS3 at launch and didn't play it very much for a while -- and then when I did, it was just because Oblivion had finally come out for PS3 ... a game I had played for the last year on PC ... Not going to do that again.

This. Wait until the release, and go from there.

Personally, I'm going with the PS4, but after 2-3 years. All the bugs should (hopefully) be worked out, and hopefully they'll have a new(er) model and a lowered price by that point.

Have you tried asking your kids what console the'd like?

A PC might be more helpful, since it can also be used for schoolwork. If you're dead set on a console though... I'd say PS4 is looking better than the xbone.

... and they can install a load of mods for the games they like. Plus, great deals on older games - Steam summer sale, gog.com, etc.
Not to mention that a number of good Indie titles only turn up on PCs at all, as the makers can't afford to cut a deal with the console manufacturers, and few big sponsors are interested in churning out money for "no-names".

Granted, the mod thing can also be a negative aspect for children (*coughcough*), and the internet is certainly a risk in itself. But if you really do want a console, I'm with Super Ready too. Wait until they're out. Then check the reviews and compare them, rather than trusting in the hype, the fanbase, and the haters of each side.

[edit]Just checked the release dates for both consoles ... November, right? It could be close, but you should still have enough time until x-mas.

I can't believe I'm about to suggest something so under-handed, but... see if you can reserve both with places that don't ask for deposits (difficult, I know). Make a decision and cancel one - they'll likely sell it anyway.

Its tough to say which one will be better for kids/have more kid games.

Most of the launch titles and exclusives advertised so far are more adult titles.

I'm going to go with the crowd and say wait untill after they are released and read some reveiws and talk to people who bought them.

Personally I plan on getting both.

I have decided that none of the two companies will be getting my money. I do not feel like handing over so much cash for a mere toy that I most likely will end up not using at all after a fe months.

I've been looking at the next gen consoles too and have decided to wait and see what happens after launch. I've also been toying with the idea of the Wii U due to price (considering I'm more of a PC guy) and the nintendo virtual console is pretty appealing as I wouldn't mind playing some of those classic N64 games again.... tough decisions!

That, and the WiiU will have some good games coming out, on top of the decent ones out now.

Still getting the Xbox One even though I have to wait for next year, Damn asshats who were doing the translations just left in the middle of it, leaving us screwed over.

Now that you mention it, the games on the Wii U are probably also somewhat more kids-friendly in terms of content. As Ma55ter_fett mentioned, a lot of the titles on the XB1 and the PS4 are rather adult-oriented.

That being said, unfortunately that's also the kind of games that are "in" with the kids, and the last thing you'd want is a bunch of disappointed faces because you didn't get one of the "cool" consoles... Is there any way to get an idea what the kids themselves would like? What sort of games they play right now, etc?

I am in Japan, So getting an Xbox would be kind of silly, i am in Nintendo/Sony land! So it will be a PS4 when they release it here probably

Going to wait for a while and see what both are like, but it will likely be the PS4.

Xbox one will be brought for sure, just for Halo and a couple other titles, although not likely till next year. Launch has nothing that interests me.

I have a day one of preorder still mind, watching to see if it sells out shoots up in value. Otherwise it'll be cancelled.

Hoping they'll do a themed box next year around Halo or SW Battlefront, price might have dropped by then as well.

PS4 is a possible purchase depending on exclusives, but once again, nothing has caught my eye as yet.

Its really up to you. You said you have 2 teens. I assume they're into shooters. Its a toss up for those. Call of duty has the bigger player bass on the xbox. While battlefield has the larger player bass on playstation. As far as other genre's go the devs have done a pretty good job. Of spreading them out on all concoles. I would also suggest seeing if any of their friends are getting a specific console since everybody likes to play with their friends.

One final thought. I would research whats been revealed on both systems and see if you have any strong feelings for or against either. Ultimately what you choose is up to you.

Battlefield does not actually have the "larger player base on the playstation". PC has the largest player base, with 360/PS3 being within spitting distance of each other.

What do your sons play currently? If they have a 360 currently they would be more likely to enjoy the Xbox One games, if however they have a Ps3 then vice versa.

They're of an age when they might be quite loyal to a brand, be it the Playstation or Xbox so buying the wrong one might mean they're initially disappointed. This point is very important.

The second most important bit of information to find out is what their friends play. They may already play with their friends online and would want to carry on doing so. Even if they don't play online (due to subscription fees for online gaming it's possible) if they and their friends play playstation currently i would strongly recommend getting the PS4, same goes for xbox.

Another thing to be aware of is whether they like games like FIFA football and Racing games or prefer games in which they shoot aliens or slay dragons etc. The Playstation brand better caters to games like FIFA and other sports titles. The Xbox brand is more 'Nerdy' for want of a better word, if your boys enjoy science fiction and fantasy they might be better served with xbox. If your sons enjoy military games like Call of Duty/Battlefield/Black Ops either system will provide these games.

Finally there's the consumer issue. The Xbox One seems the more poorly made/designed console but it cant be known until release. During the last generation The 360 was initially very poorly made and designed but had more stable firmware/software than the, well built and reliable, PS3.

If you are concerned about your Children playing games with adult themes and violence/swearing i would lean towards the PS4. The xbox brand either does 18 rated games or 'Kiddie' games with little middle ground. Your sons may feel too old for 'Kiddie' games but you may still want them to play age appropriate games.

Also the Xbox One is quite dear especially in the EU territory. It also comes with the expensive 'Kinect' camera which might never get used, especially seeing as your sons are entering their teens (Kinect games are aimed at the family market and children between 5-12.)

I'm not sure where you are getting the "poorly made/designed" bit from.
