Alex Jones is a special kind of crazy I enjoy reading for entertainment purposes. At the same time, I'm terrified of him. Partially terrified that in some strange alternate universe, the stuff he's saying is actually happening, and also partially terrified that there's people out there in this one who actually think the stuff he's saying is actually happening here.

I wonder what led to the accidental firing of his weapon having him dismissed from service?

Anybody got anything on that? I wonder if he was treated heavy handedly and this is the result... (not that it justifies it, just trying to understand why).

That does bring about an interesting question. Do we find him worth ridicule simply because he's utterly nuts, or because we can't cope with the possibility, however infinitesimal, of the utter bull gak he spews actually being right?

Terrible that 12 people lost their lives because of this D-bag . On a personal level, I work on a military installation. It happens to be the only place I go on a regular basis that I'm not armed (no firearms on a federal installation). My nightmare scenario is an active shooter at work. If some madman is running loose through my neighborhood or downtown or something it's no less tragic but it’s a LOT more personally manageable.

1: he's totally gak balls crazy
2: The FBI has a list of people who frequent his website, he's not nearly entertaining enough for me to want that level of scrutiny.

That took longer then I expected.

The nut job wing of the far right must be so conflicted at needing to oppose Obama taking action in Syria even when they so badly want to kill Muslims that they are in a state of dumbfounded confusion these days.

So much nonsensical fear-mongering to accomplish, so little time...

Poor bastards at that base. Must be a horrible thing to experience, not just for the people on the base, but for their family as well, who would spend an agonising time trying to find out if their loved ones are still safe.

I suspect his philosophy may be to prove that a sufficently broken clock can be completely wrong forever, and will not even get something right by accident.

Yeah, I wonder what more gun control could have been done to prevent this. He already broke all of those laws. Glad to see Feinsteinn didn't even wait to find out all the damage before she tried climbing on the bodies to make a pulpit.

Uh he wasn't actually. The shooter was not legally able to own a firearm due to his prior record. So yes, society and the state agree with you.

Well as far as I've heard, he was never convicted of a felony. So there may have been nothing that legally restricted him from owning the firearms.

Last I knew he was firmly in the "no buy guns list" if I'm wrong on that I'm wrong. That's a failure to prosecute those two crimes properly though, not a failure of gun control.

DA did not press charges on the Texas incident. The Washington one, he was charged, but they haven't found a record yet of what the results were. Illegal Discharge of a Firearm is a misdemeanor in Washington, and the other charge appears to have been a misdemeanor charge as well.

Well, making lots of kinds of guns illegal, combined with expansive police operations to locate and remove those weapons from society would have an impact. Now, I'm not saying that any of that should be done, and it certainly shouldn't be done in response to this shooting (gun control advocates fixation on publicised massacres over the daily is large part of why their approach is so wrong headed)... but you did ask

Via NBC...

The gunman was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and a handgun when he was killed, authorities said. But law enforcement officials told NBC News they believed he arrived packing only the shotgun, which he bought last week from a gun dealer in Lorton, Va., about 20 miles from Washington.

So, he got the rifle and the handgun somewhere on base.

He was an aviation electrician's mate who worked on DC-9s. Not exactly the sort of gig where you pick up PTSD.

His dad or someone said he was traumatized by 9/11, though. Apparently he's from New York.

I get trauma can make you see things in a skewed fashion...but how is a reaction to being traumatised by 9/11 killing military personnel? Unless you follow Jones religiously, I can't see any link there. It is just sad.

I very much doubt there's a link.

CBS is reporting recent roommates saying the guy was upset with his employer over pay disputes centered around a recent work trip to Japan.

No military personnel were actually killed, by the way. It was all contractors.

NBC News correspondent Pete Williams is reporting Alexis purchased a shotgun in Lorton, Virginia during the past week or so.

Washington Naval Yard gunman Aaron Alexis suffered a host of serious mental illnesses prior to his shooting rampage on Monday that claimed the lives of 12 people U.S. law enforcement officials revealed today.
Gunman: Accprding to NBC Washington, this man Aaron Alexis, 34, from Fort Worth, Texas is the Navy Yard shooter
Gunman: According to NBC Washington, this man Aaron Alexis, 34, from Fort Worth, Texas is the Navy Yard shooter. A background check has revealed that this is the police mugshot for Alexis who was arrested but not charged for firing a gun in his apartment in 2010
Alexis, 34, sought treatment at the Veterans Administration for paranoia, insomnia and possible schizophrenia in August - but despite his psychiatric problems the Navy had not declared him mentally unfit which would have rescinded his security clearance and impacted his ability to purchase firearms.
Indeed, Alexis had 'secret' clearance and was assigned to start working at the naval yard as a civilian contractor with a military-issued ID card, his firm's chief executive Thomas Hoshko said today.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing criminal investigation, law enforcement officials said that Alexis' family were aware of his mental problems, which included hearing voices in his head.
Sources with the investigation into the mass shooting told CNN that Alexis had recently made contact with two Veterans Administration hospitals for his psychological issues.
In the past Alexis has previously claimed to be suffering from PTSD after helping rescue efforts in New York following the 9/11 terror attacks

Sounds like the Navy was in the process of trying to help him with his mental issues and that an evaluation on him may not have been completed as he had only "recently made contact with two Veterans Administration hospitals for his psychological issues".
